Default How bad is it, really?

So I'm a total Top Ramen addict. It's so fast, yummy, and cheap. I understand that it doesn't have any real nutrients, but is it really as bad as everyone says it is? Will it make me put on weight if I eat it several times a week? How can it really be much worse than other cooked noodles?

Thanks in advance for any advice or info :-)

I could never eat it because it was too salty and I hate salt. But all that salt has got to be really bad for you, and it'll probably make you all big and bloated besides. There is a FILTHY amount of salt in that stuff.

Lol, that's probably what I like best about it is the salt. But salt doesn't make you fat, right? It just messes with your cholesterol or blood pressure or something, right? Lol, iunno very much about this stuff.. I always thougt that salt was bad for you, but that it doesn't really make you fat. Hm.

Dooode... that shit is pure EVIL... it's got high amounts of everything bad in it. I've often thought to myself how perfect the world would be if Ramen were nutritious- I mean damn I'd save a few g a year!

"Ramen and similar products are often criticized as being unhealthy or junk food. A single serving of instant noodles is high in carbohydrates but low in fiber, vitamins and minerals. Noodles are typically fried as part of the manufacturing process, resulting in high levels of saturated fat and/or trans fat. Additionally, if served in an instant broth, it typically contains the controversial ingredient monosodium glutamate (MSG) as well as a high amount of sodium, usually in excess of 60% of the U.S. Recommended Dietary Allowance." - Wikipedia

    BUT there is HOPE:

Ick. I'm starting to be convinced...

I do all that stuff that article lists already.. I have half the block of noodles at a time, and always add frozen veggies (sometimes an egg, too, lol... It's a wonder I'm not 200 lbs by now).

Regular raw noodles are probably just as cheap (I think it was like 1 lb for $3 or something) but they take longer. Whole wheat noodles are another option, maybe i'll switch to those.. a bit more pricey, but it's worth it to feel like i'm eating something good or at least neutral, instead of bad.

isn't there a lot of fat in them, too, because of the flavoring?

Damn I love Ramen. I have a secret love for it. When Ive been at school all day I want something warm and yummy. Its most of the time Ramen. It actually holds no nutritional value and the one in the cup is even worse for you.

I had to cut back on it because I was loving it so much.

The sodium will cause your body to retain water, making you bloated.

I'd say it's ok to eat it once or twice a week. Too much of any one thing isn't good. Eating noodles all the time without balancing the diet will eventually make you put on weight and nutients lost from not balancing will result in defficiencies.

I love it too, but not all the time....that's how you get fat!

Oooh, I love ramen noodles. Sometimes when I want a snack I eat the block raw. I used to think that it was better for me then eating chips or something but I truly think they're equally bad for you. I do feel like I'm retaining water afterwards though.

I so want a bag of ramen right now. Dammit that I don't have any. I figure whats the worst about it is the HUGE amount of sodium. I'm still retaining water from the ramen of my childhood I think, shit.

Sometimes our bodies crave things that aren't necessarily great for us because we need something in it. Maybe you've been liking it so much lately because you're sodium deficient at the moment. I don't think a cup a week is awful, but more than that seems like a BAAAAAAD idea.

i think if you really like something you do more harm not eating it .. the stress factor that comes.. so maybe try a step better approach.. making your own.. i think you need a pasta maker but that would be a small investment if you eat alot .. here's a recipe i found
i bet if you used a good unbleached flour, a good oil, celtic sea salt, free range organic eggs.. when all was said and done you still get the yumm factor but can feel a little better about it.. let me know if you try it how it turns out.. i dont eat pasta but my son is a noodle freak.. ive been toying over just investing in a pasta machine and getting down and dirty and making them from scratch.. i finally made chocolate chip cookies that turned out semi normal looking since he loves the ones from the Safeway bakery.. im trying to get in gear and make things from scratch a step better than just denying our cravings and then giving in and not caring

    2 cups flour
    4 eggs
    salt
    1 T. water
    Oil for frying
In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the eggs and water. Combine until it comes together to form a nice pasta dough. Let rest 30 minutes, then roll through pasta machine with an angel hair attactment. Twirl your desired amount in a nest. Let your nests dry for a couple hours, then deep fry for 3 minutes on each side. Let cool. Boil in salted water until tender. (Since this is fresh ramen without any perservites, store in the fridge for up to a week, or freeze for 3 months)

I think I go through phases where I'm like "OMG I need junk food!" for like 2 or 3 days, then I get over it, and go back to my healthy (mostly) vegan diet for at least a couple of weeks. In the long run I guess it's not so bad, eh?

There are worse foods to binge on, LOL

Why not learn how to make noodles at home? Start making the Japanese version of noodle soup, which is fresher.

I used to hate Ramen but now that I can't have it (allergy) I miss it, LOL!

I love ramen, but it makes me ill. I hate food sensitivities

I can have it maybe once a month, and only half a package, 1/4 the flavoring. and I need to eat perfectly the rest of the day, to balence it out! so I stay well.
