Do a Virus scan just in case just to be on the safe side...

I had a virus a Trojan one which normal anti-virus software will not get rid of, but thankfully its gone.

...run "ad-aware" from lavasoft. and clean what it may find.

Also check out AVG. You can get both anti-virus and spyware protection for free. There is an option to upgrade for some money but you don't really need to. Yet another thing to help catch it.

Definitely do a scan for spyware or adware-it sounds like that's what you downloaded. It also hijacked your homepage. Like someone else said-Adaware is really good at getting rid of stuff like that and it's free.

Is there a popup thingy in the bottom right corner that repeatedly pops up and says "Youe computer has been infected. Install anti-spyware to fix it now!" or something like that? If so I can tell you from firsthand experience what you are dealing with.

You downloaded a piece of spyware. Got any new toolbars? That's one way to tell. Adaware is good. Spybot S & D requires some skillz to use effectively. Suggest you D/L Windows Defender if you're using XP or Vista. If you have a good security suite - and you should - now's the time to update and run a scan.

Be forewarned, no single piece of anti-spyware or pop-up blocker will get all the nasties!!

And NEVER click yes to download anything that you didn't intend to download! Especially with Windows WMV files. No no no.

Here's the schema: You d/l a wmv file. You try to run the video and you get a pop-up about "digital rights management" (DRM) licensing. You click to get the license and you get another pop-up telling you that you have to install some toolbar or update to get the license. If you haven't already figured it out by now - close media player and delete the wmv. Do not go any further or you will be doomed to a life of unwanted pop-ups, spyware and the resulting degraded system performance.

Or worse yet, even if you do remove it, it may corrupt your registry which is another problem in itself. Then you will have to take your computer to a shop to get it fixed, use system recovery disks that you may have or, in my case, wipe my drive completely clean, installing a pirated copy of Windows XP Pro in place of the authentic Windows XP Home. Wheeeeeee.

I guess my point is, they can be very difficult to get rid of, and even if you think it's gone it may come back to torture you later. If you have important data and/or progams on your computer you should use a great deal of caution imo.

hmmm. Couldn't tell you what to do with the McAfee program, I haven't used it much. I'm assuming you've done all the obvious stuff like reading the FAQ and help and googled and whatnot. Maybe you could take a screen shot and upload that? Maybe whatever virus you may have gotten is messing with McAfee or something. It would be frustrating to have to pay $$$ for an antivirus program and it won't even run.

If you choose you can take a screen shot by pressing Ctrl+Print Screen and that will copy an image of your screen, then you can open paintbrush (go to start --> run, then type in pbrush) paste the pic in there and save it. You could then upload it somewhere such as and then link to it or maybe the forum software will let you just attach it. Sorry if you already know all that and I am being condescending.

You can run an online virus scan at that will find pretty much anything and everything. It can take a long time though so you would probably want to let it run while you are sleeping or something. It may not delete the bad guy but it should let you know what it is, if you still have it. Some viruses hide themselves on your computer and reinstall themselves after an antivirus program cleans it and then you have to get rid of it some other way.
