    Default Slang from the 1920's

I thought this site was interesting. It's about terms we use now that originated as slang terms in the 1920s. Words like "bump off", caper, "gold digger", scram and my personal favorite, "left holding the bag".

Just something to peruse to kill time.

I wonder why "gay" isn't on there. That term originated in the 1920's too, because the homosexuals were always out partying and having a good time (at least the ones that people knew about).

OK, I wanna see some bona fides on this. They didn't have "gat" for handgun, nor "skirt" for a woman. I'm suspecting a little research laziness here. And in the time of Prohibition, why don't they have bathtub gin?

"gay" meant happy or good time. it was not sexual preference to them, then you were "funny" if i recall right. that or "queer" something like that.

they left out lots of good phrases..i bet i can find a site with hundreds of em.

    edit: http://home.earthlink.net/~dlarkins/slang-pg.htm

there ya go. they have more phrases

    A few of my favorites...

    Cheaters - Eyeglasses
Daddy - a young woman's boyfriend or lover, especially if he's rich
Drugstore Cowboy - a guy that hangs around on a street corner trying to pick up girls
Dumb Dora - a stupid female
Giggle Water - An intoxicating beverage; alcohol

That's how the euphemism got started. The (outed) homosexual guys were always partying and being gay, and it was in the 20's or so that "gay" started to refer to them specificially.

Hahaha, that made my day. My mom used to say that all the time, "their kids look like rag a muffins."
