    Default Upstate NY Snowstorm

100+ inches and more on the way!!

I know they usually get big snow coming off the lake up there, but this is positively ridiculous.

Lots of people who live right off the end of Lake Ontario do have 100 inches plus. I live on the edge of the lake effect show bands, so I've only had about 60-70 inches worth of snow to deal with over the past week. Even so there was enough snow that my 5hp showblower died of a 'heart attack' (engine burned up) in the middle of the week. After trying to shovel by hand for one day, yesterday I went out and bought a new 8.5hp showblower in self-preservation ! The big negative impact on my budget will probably turn out to have been much less painful than the negative impact on my back had I tried to keep on shoveling by hand waiting for my old snowblower to get fixed !

Right now the snow is just getting deep enough that it's starting to climb a few inches up the glass of my house's windows. There has also been so much buildup on the roofs that I had to get up there and shovel it off with the help of a couple of friends and neighbors, like your linked picture shows. Luckily, the power, phone and cable have stayed working despite the heavy snows.

However, weather report says that it's not over yet, with another 12-16 inches expected before this weekend is over. Hey, the fireplace is burning, the fresh ground coffee is perking, I have plenty of Bushmills Irish Creme, lots of friends and neighbors coming and going ...

I am told that the bars and clubs are doing gangbuster business in the really heavy snow areas. Once the state police close the interstate, they wind up with 100's of customers with nowhere else to go !

I braved a trip to the shopping mall yesterday during a few hours break in the weather to stock up on necessities and pick up the new snowblower, but I'll be damned if I'm going on these roads again today or tomorrow !

After the governor declared a disaster, the State DOT shipped in some unbelievably heavy duty snowblowing equipment like dumptrucks with 10 ft wide 10 ft high snowblowers attached (powered by 500hp 454 Chevy Marine engines ... I asked one of the drivers who had stopped at the local convenience store for a break). Those things 'take no prisoners'. The driver told me that his biggest worry is hitting a small car buried under the snow ... because it will bend the snowblower blades as it's chopped up and blown out the chute along with the snow, but which then puts the killer snowblower out of commission for an hour or two while the blades are replaced ! The driver told me that buried snowmobiles are no problem though ... all they do is make some extra noise and scrape the paint off the snowblower blades as the pieces fly 100ft out the chute ! But the driver also told me that these snowblowers are nothing compared to the ones used by Amtrak ... which are 16ft wide and powered by 4000 horsepower jet aircraft engines.

And DOC ... here's something that one of the 'local boys' put together ...

Wow! I grew up north of Buffalo. We used to get lots of snow back then, but not this much. This year's seen a lot of snow in Colorado, too. But the jet stream pattern has finally shifted, reducing the severity of our storms and warming it up. Now you folks are getting it, instead. Good luck!

Problem with this much snow is roof collapse as well as where to put the stuff and the restricted travel. Just a coupla feet on the ground here, but a few miles north and it is a different world. However, if you aren't sick of it, it is pretty.

I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

Customers are not entitled to grope, disrespect, or rob strippers. This is their job, not their hobby, and they all need income. Clubs are not just some erotic show for guys to view while drinking.

East and Southeast of the eastern edge of Lake Ontario, not as far up as the Thousand Islands region.

NY is a moderately varied state.

Here is a Doppler Radar link that shows the area map. Check it out for lake effect storms, etc.

Ok was wondering. Have family/friends out in the Otsego County area and Albany.

It takes a while for the New York Times to catch on to events upstate. They finally did. Here's their story this morning... (You may need to register to view this.)

I hope everyone is okay and safe, that's actually kind of scary with all the problems that could occur! PA is supposed to be next, but nothing at all in comparison!

Yea really, where upstate? Family up near the start of the adirondacks, but that's not really near Buffalo though...exit 29 on the Thruway to be exact. =D

I spent 2 years in NM and have now returned to Jersey...to find myself...missing the good old days. Winter's no fun without "getting stuck somewhere" And hopefully that place is at home in bed. =) Or at a bar in the middle of nowhere.

Yea we haven't seen more than 5 inches I'm willing to bet.

    Yay guys--empathy, sympathy--and secret jealousy. =)
