    Stripping degrading? *Yeah Right!* ::)

Im working as a cook while having a break from stripping.

I had a customer pretty much trying to score a free meal today (paid for one with "extra veg" then was asking for a second plate and extra meat) and when I refused she got abusive.

Quick word to the manager and her and her husband were kicked out.

A few years ago, PN (pre nudie) I would have apologised and kissed arse to keep the custie happy and make sure I didnt lose my job. Now I stand up for myself.

Now this is thanks to stripping. I wouldnt take that sort of shit when I danced, and I was earning $100 an hour. Why on earth would I put up with it for $25 an hour? I was working for myself stripping, and could CHOOSE my grounds when dealing with custie. Now I hold onto those boundaries and enforce them IRL.

So stripping has definately made my life better, with that perspective. Im more assertive and wont take crap from people and let them walk all over me.

Like I said, I wouldnt take crap in the club for GOOD money, why would I take it for regular wages?

    Good for you babe!

Yes I agree with you, dancing gives you the confidence to know that you are worth more. I used to put up with all kinds of abuse when I worked in retail that I would not dream of letting happen now.

It's also made me alot more confident just with speaking to people in general and not taking any shit from men.

    Hahahahaha! Oh, hell yes. Abso-fucking-lutely.

It's really helped me to learn a balance. There've been times/situations in my life where I've allowed myself to be walked on as well as times that I've been an irrational hothead that has burned bridges to my own detriment. After dancing for years now I've learned to stop, evaluate the situation, and always keep in mind "what can I get out of this." If I decide I have nothing possiblet to gain, then, yeah. I won't put up with one OUNCE of shit.

If I believe I DO have something to gain (whether it be dances in the club or sponsorship for my business or whatever) then I'll smile, kiss a bit of ass, and laugh all the way to the bank.

Agreed. If you want to talk about a degrading job, talk about working retail!

Dancing has also given me a stronger backbone in certain aspects of my life.

I did that for 3 days! Most of the time I spent in the toilet to avoid making calls.

I found this to be funny because I always hang up the phone when a telemarketer calls. I feel so bad now.

Hahaha. I guess it would be like, they take the opportunity to totally insult you in one breath, before hanging up on you? Lol I'm sorry but once my neighbor had given out *our* phone number to his bank---who would call no less than twice a day, EVERY DAY. They all had crazy accents, and one time a particularly irritating one had the nerve to tell me "Well you must KNOW Bob!!!" so I said "And are you a hick from ****?" (Leaving out state name so as not to offend anyone) and he said "No Ma'am, I have a high school diploma."

Other than the the COLLECTION AGENT/TELEMARKETER, I took everyone's shit as a waitress and retail. I live and work in NJ and people really do walk around like "Well hey. I'm from NJ and everyone thinks I'm rude, so I'm gonna BE as RUDE as I possibly can, and ruin the girl behind the counter's day."

Then I started bartending, and decided to never wait another table again. Then I started stripping, and decided to never have to answer to anyone for as long as I can! Good thread. Yay.

No joke. I was basically people's punching bag when I worked in retail. Talk about degrading-there you go! And you have to apologize profusely, kiss ass and suck it up with a smile. I do not miss those days for a second! Stripping has probably been the most liberating, empowering and non-degrading job I've ever had. I love the fact that if someone's an asshole I can call them an asshole. In this business, the customer is not always right and I wouldn't have it any other way!

I am so glad to hear that stripping is degrading. I am not a dancer yet but I was debating on whether or not I should try. Most of my friends that I have talked to about it was telling me how it was SOOOOO degrading. I so disagree with them now.

The only jobs that are degrading are the ones you allow to be degrading. Stripping can be, retail can be, etc...if you let people walk all over you they will. Stripping has helped me grow the most iron backbone but it also taught me to be proud of myself no matter what I do.
Hooray for strong ass bitches that don't take any shit. I still shudder at my old wimpy ass-kissing doormat days...just the thought that I EVER valued someone's opinion more than my own makes me want to projectile vomit on the nearest asshole...uggh.

Tell me about it!!!!!! That's what I did a few years ago, work in retail. Horrible treatment for horrible wages!(seriously, who can honestly live independently on $7/hr?).

There were people that abused me all the time when I worked in retail. There were cocky self-righteous employees that would try to tell me what to do, when I knew damn right what to do and how to do it. I think they mistaked me for being "dumb"(since I was 22 and working full-time retail with nothing else going for me), therefore they thought I was feeble or incompetent(despite the manager's good service reviews of my work). I also put up with customers' bad attitudes with a smile on my face. One time when I was a server at a restaurant, a customer told me off and I "grinned and beared it," to the point that he actually snitched me out to management for LAUGHING at him!(in reality, I was smiling in an optimistically friendly way) Here I was, trying my hardest to maintain a positive attitude, and a customer used my good attitude efforts against me to make me look BAD! But yeah nowadays, I do not put up with that kinda shit.

Another thing that helped me, is learning what I am worth. Before I worked in clubs, I was willing to settle for shitty wages(and then wondered why I was never able to pay my bills). Nowadays though, I demand more money. I know that I cannot demand $100/hr or something high like that, but I do know that for being a college graduate, it is unacceptable to work shit wages such as $10/hr, or to spend full-time hours volunteering for free while the other interns my age are getting a salary. I suffered at working low wages for a while, but fuck it...I'm not down for that. Right now, I have a full-time day job that pays decently, but not quite enough, so I am seeking a second job. I am a little fed up with the tipping industry(bars, restaurants, strip clubs, etc) because it's been so dead lately, so I will probably seek some kind of job with a steady wage such as furniture sales. I don't feel as bad accepting this kind of job now, because at least now I have a respectable job as my #1 job. But I know that I will absolutely NOT settle for anything less than $10/hr.

    Totally agree!

I wont take less than $22 an hour for hospitality work. Funnily though, when you turn down a job saying that you think that with your skills/experience you're worth more than they can offer, they often contact you offering the extra money, plus weekend bonuses! Ive turned down two jobs which both called me later offering the money that I wanted.

This thread is great. I dated a girl several years ago through her first several months of dancing and it was amazing to witness the transition in her inner sense of self...

...didn't hurt our sex life either

I worked as one for three days as well (it was kinda a group trial so I wasn't the only person doing this three day trial) and I still hang up as soon as I know it is a telemarketer.

I've gotten into the habit of making the other person speak. I won't answer my phone "Hello" first anymore... as I've found that's a great way of telling if it is a friend or telemarketer. The telemarketer is waiting for me to say Hi or Hello. A friend or someone calling me or my flatmate will just talk straight away.

    Good on you celeste!

Actually, hate to burst your bubble. Whilst what you are saying can be true and correct... it is also because the market has turned around to a point (here in Australia at least) where the ball is in the employees court not so much the employers. Employers are willing to do this nowdays compared to not too long ago because they realise that people can be picky/choosy with who they will work for/with in the end.

It is just the nature of the market at the moment (supposedly). I keep reading this so I'm guessing it is true.

Yup, I don't have a second job but I still refuse to put up with people's crap (since I do it for big bucks at work). Ugh, remembering the BS I put up with at my restaraunt jobs as a teen for min. wage sort of of makes me sick.,..

Thanks for this thread, I needed a reminder. Last night was the first in ages that I was dumb enough to fall for a custie's manipulative crap, screwing me out of money in the end. Got to go back stronger today. Dunno why I had a lapse like that but I sure do feel stupid!

I used to be a telemarketer and actually it wasn't so bad. Hanging up as soon as you realize it's a telemarketer is actually a very polite thing to do. That way neither you nor the marketer end up wasting time if you're not going to buy anything anyway.

I've been giggling reading this whole thread since I have worked as a telemarketer, a waitress, and in retail. I couldn't agree more with the above ladies.
