Default Any Suggestions for Pregnant Dancers?

Ok... so I just found out I'm pregnant... still in shock... was not planning for it... but I'm ok right now... probably cause it hasn't sunk in. So it's kind of the typical story... full-time dancer, no savings because winter has been so bad down here, afraid to try to get another job because I'll have to leave it after awhile, no insurance, etc. Yes, the dad and I are together, but we are basically 'making it' and really can't survive without my income. So, to all you other ladies who had a baby while dancing or those who are pregnant now, do you have any suggestions? What did or are you doing? Did you get another job when you started to show.. and if so what kind. I have a college degree (chemistry), but I'm not willing to make the commitment an employer of that type will need me to make... I just want to work for those few months while I'm showing to keep the bills up to date. Also, what did you do about paying hospital bills if you didn't have insurance? Really any input would be helpful. Thanks ladies.

well since u said any input would be helpful....
First, congratulations on the baby to be

Secondly, why are you afraid to get a job in your field, I'm not fully understanding your hesitation.

I mean, since you don't have health ins., wouldn't this be your best bet?
Even if not in your field, there are plenty of companies that offer insurance after only a few months. That whole gray area about pregnancy being a pre-existing condition, dunnoooo, but you can always "not have known" you were preggers.

I would even consider getting a hostess/bartending gig in your club. I've seen 2 or 3 girls pull this off, but they never danced at that same club again after the baby was born.

There's several reason why I'm hesitant... one because I hate the field I got my degree in (don't even ask)... and secondly I really don't feel comfortable getting a job at a lab (for example) where they are expecting me to be there for quite awhile and only be there for a few months. Guess my honesty may hurt me in this case... I just don't like leading employers on... I know I won't b there long... and I know they will be looking for someone who is wanting to make a career there. I mean... would now b a good time to start working towards my real career goal (tattoo apprenticeship, modeling) or just do something to help us get by?

I would love to encourage you to work to toward your tattooing. I'm just thinking, you may start feeling nauseous and tired pretty soon.

I dunno how much actual work is involved in the apprenticeship(and I really mean that, I'm not being a smartass at all), but I don't think I would personally be up for learning a new trade, during the early months especially.

I danced until I was 6 months during my third pregnancy. I was used to being pregnant, knew my limitations, and I never show until about that time or later, so a couple of tube dresses and some saltines and I was straight. Heck, the only reason I told the girls at work, was because I got sick of them asking me for tampons!!!

I'm sure some of the other gals will pipe in shortly, with more & better suggestions.
    Again, congrats Sweetie

    Congratulations!

I was in your same situation about a year ago. We were just making enough to get by, hadn't really saved money, and my pregnancy was also not expected. Your situation just sounds all too familiar.

I ended up and stayed at my club until I was about 4 months along. The club normally lets girls work the beertub while they're pregnant, but there were too many girls expecting. I also decided I didn't want my regular customers to see me pregnant.

I ended up working at another club. The club I went to was not nearly as nice, but I did make some money there. I ended up with a regular that would come in every sunday to see me. While I wasn't making great money, I still made enough to basically survive on. However, I was pretty lucky and never got very big. I'm 5'9'' and was originally very small. I originally got hired on as a waitress/dancer, but the club just made me dance. In the end, I'm glad I did dance though. It kept me in shape and helped my income a bit. Check at clubs for housemom positions also.

I lasted until I was almost 8 months along. That's when I finally started to get a little bit of a belly. As soon as I started showing, I quit. I never had anybody ask though. I know girls that have danced with a huge belly, but i didn't feel right doing that. I know there are fetish guys, but it just wasn't for me.

After that, I got a crappy job for a little bit of income still coming in. I was working at a Radioshack. As much as it sucked. It was an easy job and I made commission. I was actually working both jobs for a couple of months. I know it's a little much, but make the money while you can.

As for insurance, I would check on your government's site, or even ask some of the girls at work that have had children. That's how I found out about programs here. Indiana has a program that pays for all childbirth expenses even prenatal care. That's what I did. It was a lifesaver.

You could always try the apprenticeship along with maybe some dancing. That's what I would suggest. Now would be a good time to try to get into tattooing as you have more time than you will in a few months.

I hope this helped a little. I know it's completely overwhelming, and it's really hard, but things have a way of working themselves out.

Wow - kylie3183 - I really don't know how you did it but my hat goes off to you!
    SUPERMOM! lol
By month 2, I was far too exhausted to continue dancing. I had a lot of pregnancy symptoms in my 1st trimester that are now fading (nausea, fatigue, indigestion). Needless to say, I didn't feel up to strapping on the heels, grinding on smelly, grabby, drunk dudes and swinging around a pole. By the way, if you do continue dancing, please wear lower heels and don't do pole tricks, since you can really hurt yourself. Your balance is off during pregnancy, making it easier to fall.

I also didn't want my regs seeing me pregnant either. Some customers would ask if I was pregnant even at two months and it sketched me out in an instinctive way. I think I just carried myself differently and had a lot of bloating too. My belly looked bigger than normal. I'm almost 5 months and I am showing considerably now. And for the record, I was 100 lbs. soaking wet and 5'4" before becoming pregnant. Now I'm about 130! I was extremely petite - so much so you could see an aspirin in my stomach. I have a friend who was about 120 before getting pregnant and she started showing early too. There is really no way to tell when you're going to start showing or how much.

Did it hurt me financially when I quit? HELL YES it did. I cried about it a lot. I felt like I was giving up so much, but I knew it was the right decision. Would I do anything differently? Absolutely not. I listened to my heart and my body and rested like I needed to. I moved in with my man and basically slept for 3 and a half months while he went and worked, usually picking up two days of overtime also. When I felt well enough, I started doing phone sex again and this has helped our income tremendously. I knew I would never have a "normal" job again before conceiving, and that still holds true.

Like you, I was also apprenticing to be a tattoo artist, and I still keep in touch with my teacher for when I'm ready to go back again, but it just became too tiresome to continue my lessons especially when I moved about an hour and a half away from the shop. If you want my advice on that - GO if you can, but don't force yourself. If your teacher will be lenient on you and not make you do typical asshole apprenticeship stuff and you can make a committed effort, then it will be worth it because you can probably finish before the baby is born and then transition out of stripping when you're ready.
If you can't go, then at least practice your drawing skills and read up on tattoo stuff (Machine Gun magazine is really good).

I had no health insurance either, but I found the midwife I wanted to see and she helped me apply for government funded health insurance. You'll need monthly (eventually weekly) prenatal visits, not just hospital delivery. There are also other options as to where you can deliver your baby. I'm having mine at home.

I know it all seems scary right now. It's still terrifying sometimes to me, but you WILL be fine. Just make taking care of yourself and your unborn baby your absolute #1 priority and everything else will fall into line.

    Oh - and congratulations!!

Personally, I don't think girls should continue to dance when pregnant. It's just a personal thing - I understand that each situation is different.

I actually was extremely lucky for my pregnancy. I had done really well during the spring and summer and I'm a saver, so I'd put away a pretty decent savings account. It was enough for me to barely make it through the entire pregnancy and maybe a month or two afterwards. But, I could still work (just didn't want to work in a smoky, loud club) and I knew I'd want to take my time off when I had the baby, not so much the whole pregnancy, also I had to buy individual health insurance for "pre-existing conditions" which is very expensive, so I got a job at a spa front desk. It paid like $9 an hour but it was so easy AND I got hooked up with manicures, pedicures, facials and prenatal massages!!! Like the ideal pregnant lady job right? I actually got the job right after I found out I was pregnant so I didn't mention it when hired and didn't have to tell them until I was like 5 months or something.

My story gets so much better, around my 7th month the spa gets bought by some huge national corporation, the new owners decide to fire everyone and then rehire who they wanted, SO I simply let them fire me and declined the offer to reapply, which allowed me to file for unemployment - so I basically ended up with a little surprise maternity leave and enough cash to allow me to not work until my girl was about 5 months old.

I was very lucky. But I had saved. The last month did go on the credit card, but I was a full time stay at home mommy for the first 5 months, very lucky.

If I did it again, I want to teach prenatal fitness classes.

My guess is you've decided that waiting for another time to get pregnant again was out of the question?

I sort of feel the same way. Most of all because most states allow smoking in the SC and second hand smoke is really bad for mom and unborn baby. I feel lucky that there is a smoking ban in CA.

I'm still dancing and plan on doing so until I feel uncomfortable with how I look. January was a rough month for me. I was tired and cranky. Most days, I didn't want to speak to anyone or go anywhere. I think I worked a total of 6 days the entire month. Luckily, I had a tiny bit of money saved to pay my bills. I finally just took two weeks and went to California and stayed with Boyfriend. When I got back last week, I felt alive again. I think it's because the 1st trimester was coming to a close. Anyway, I've been going to work and they gym again (both with doc's approval) and socializing again. I feel alive. Oh, and I was lucky--I didn't get hit with any morning sickness.

As far as medical...I got referred to a low cost women's clinic. They do all prenatal, labs, ultrasound--everything but delivery--for $395. That's dirt cheap. I needed to get my visits started, but since I'm moving (to CA) after I can't strip, I'm not concerned that they don't do delivery. Boyfriend and I are on the fence about weather or not to get married so I can have insurance, or if I should just get Medi-Cal, since I won't be working full time. I have considered checking out the clubs in SF to see if there are any door girl or house mom positions open when I move back to CA...I haven't made any decisions yet on what I'm doing since I'm still in AZ.

Honestly, right now, I'm working on saving money for when I can't strip and for after the baby is born and just staying focused on staying in shape so I can work and feel normal.

As stressful as this all seems when I read it, I'm actually quite calm about all of it. I'm happy to be pregnant and things are great with Boyfriend. Things always work out and we have alot of good things to look forward to!!

Good luck to you and yours.

OMG girls, get health insurance for dog's sake, and save some cash for a rainey day! For example, in Texas, a healthy young girl can get private insurance for about $100 a month, even cheaper if you are VERY healthy and can pay a high deductible.

I recommend abortion, and I'm not going to sugar coat it. If you aren't willing to take a shitty day job so you can start saving to raise your child, perhaps you aren't ready.

Most temp agencies will NOT give you benefits for at least 6 months. By then, you will be having the child, and there will potentially be an exlusion rider on any health insurance for that specific pregnancy.

Katrine, although I usually love your posts and insight, this comment was way out of line. The OP wasn't stating that she's stressed and doesn't know what to do about the pregnancy, she wants to keep the baby, and who are you to recommend she do something that perhaps she may not be okay with. Bad judgement, Katrine. Tsk, tsk.

Well, I never said I wasn't willing to get a 'shitty day job' to save for my child... sorry but I take a little offense to that. I just said that I was a little worried in leading an employer on... that's all. No, abortion is not an option. What if I could never be able to have a child again after this... who knows what the future holds... so I'm not going to let go of this one.

Temping is also a good back door into great corporations (oxymoron perhaps ). Yummy benefits and incentives depending on your field and department. My Mom's department can't be outsourced so they're golden!

Congratulations! Just take your time in doing the research so you find a job and company you'll like long-term.

The main problem with leading an employer on is that if I do go to work in my field I would want a good recomendation from that employer when I left (especially since I know I will leave... I have no interest in my field) ... I have a feeling they would be pretty pissed off if I left after 4/5 months of work... especially after all the onsite training I would have to go through (which to them = $$$) ... that's the life of a chemist. And the problem with a 'regular' job is that they honestly don't pay enough for us to pay our bills... that's why I was just asking for a few suggestions from others who have been through it.
