Default London--where to buy clothes?? also some club questions..

i just moved to london from austin texas..and it seems (based on the info on their websites) that they all wear dresses here and i only own skirt/shorts outfits.. i don't know where anything is in this city yet and i need an outfit so i can audition some time this week hopefully..anyone know where i can go??

i'm planning on auditioning at spearmint rhino and/or stringfellows..comments? suggestions? i've never been to those clubs..one of my guy friends suggested them..not sure how much his opinion is worth though haha

any other tips about uk vs usa dancing? i only danced in austin (perfect 10) and dallas (silver city) for about 4 months before moving..so i was just getting used to the way things work down there and getting into the swing of things..and then i move haha. i know it's different here..i've read that on here before..i'm nervous...

oh and ps, i know i can just order stuff online..which i wish i could..but dresses are very iffy on me..they either look REALLY good or REALLY bad..so i'll order online if i absolutely HAVE to..but i'd much rather find a store in london where i can spend hours trying stuff on..

Take the tube to Walthamstow and wander...there are lots of slutty clothing stores there.

    Feature costumes for sale!

SR Tottenham Court Rd and Stringfellows { 2 clubs} are probably the most up market of the London places but they also have the highest house fees. Have a look on www.strip-magazine.com and www.mypole.co.uk { articles section} for background on London. As well as those clubs there are 5 branches of Secrets, Sophisticats, Windmill, Venus in central London plus 2 old fashioned strip places in Soho { Sunset Strip, Boulevard}, plus several strip pubs and then loads of other clubs in places like Park Royal, Ealing, Twickenham etc out of the centre. My advice is to look at the strip pubs like Browns as they have more customers, lower fees, and far fewer girls per shift.

As Tyke says, the places you mentioned have ridiculously high fees and are very competitive. I am pretty sure you will need long dresses for them, I know that you do for Secrets (who are very fussy about what you wear). I don't know where you could get gowns in London. Scarlett is right about Walthamstow for shoes and more basic stuff, try Camden also and those terrible souvenier shops along Oxford Street for some bizarre reason sell decently priced shoes and a lot of, overpriced, Leg Avenue stuff. I usually get my stuff online or in the States though as there isn't much in London.
    Good luck with your audition

    awwwww crap.

i'm so confused and overwhelmed right now..i don't know what to do. please help.

i tried researching all of this before..i registered for this board awhile back and start doing searches on all posts about london..most of the results i got were pretty old threads..

here's my deal.. tyke, i read your article back when i first signed up here..i'm so glad you wrote that..such great info!! buuuut..while strip pubs sound better for me..well, they have their downsides too.. main prob is when i was looking through old threads..i read about pubs being picky about girls. i really don't want to get rejected. i'm not the most confident of people and i know it will show here since i'm so uncomfortable with this (haven't worked in over a month..and any time i go over a week without working, i start getting nervous before work like it's my first night or something)..i worry i won't be hired. and also, i really really would like flexible hours. i'd like to pick what nights i work..

i guess my main issue is..i want to find the closest thing possible to what i'm used to. i was just started to feel completely comfortable at work..feeling really confident..i don't really want too many changes all at once. i don't know if you've been to clubs in the US..or texas at least..but i really liked the way it works. i can decide if i feel like going in to work tonight. just show up. i can go in as early as 6 or as late as 11..i can take ages to get ready.. i kinda need that because some days i just feel too nervous to go to work. and i'm sure working at fully nude places isn't going to make it any easier on me. i'd like the option to chicken out last minute and not go to work..

i really really want a place that i feel safe..i don't have a car and will have to take public transport home. i prefer the nicer clubs, like the one i worked at in dallas..i tried a new club in austin once and it made me realize just how much i loved my club in dallas. i felt the difference..in one i felt like a dancer. in the other, i felt like a stripper.

i do worry about working at the bigger places that have so many girls in one night because i am not cut throat..at all. i'm not a hustler. i rarely did as well as my close friends..mostly because i enjoy sitting and talking i think haha. i was told all the time that i didn't seem like a stripper at all..coolest stripper they ever met..most normal blah blah blah..all that crap almost every night. i'm very personable..i may not think i'm the hottest chick in the world, but i know i'm fun and interesting to talk to!

so...i really just don't know what to do. but i need to start working SOON. my savings account is looking pretty sad. i'm not looking to the nicer clubs because of money..i just feel sure that i'll be hired there..and maybe once i get back into the swing of things again..can afford to go tan and start to tone up again (taking 6 weeks off work killed me)..then i'll audition at some pubs. i'm not expecting to make a lot..just hoping for enough to get by.. my rent and bills add up to about £550-600 a month..

i dunno. i can post a pic or send you one and then maybe you can give me a better idea of if i'd likely get hired or not?

oh also..can anyone tell me what an "audition" usually consists of?

i had to "audition" for a club in austin..which meant i went to work like normal and at the end of the night they told me if i was hired or not hah. but here..am i gonna have to do like a little preview or something? because um..i'm not the most unique dancer. i pretty much just move slow and sexy..and that's about it. i don't know any poll tricks and i can't do all that booty-poppin' type dancing.. i just sway and pose around the poll haha

and to do that..i usually have to have a drink or two first to loosen up.. i can't imagine going up on a stage for the managers to show them what i've got..aaack..

Ok... So, as you say you are not a hustler, I would recommend staying away from the big clubs. As Tyke has said the best places in London (pubs) are White Horse and Browns, but they are very picky about who they hire, and as far as I know they have a waiting list to get in. I believe that you can't be very choosy about with your schedule either. Having said that I have never actually tried to get hired at either, because I don't want to work full time.
As I am a full time student I work for the agencies which cover pubs outside London and With these agencies I tell them when I can/want to work and they let me choose my shifts.
I have also worked in the US and , well, these pubs are very different from US clubs but they are very laid back, you don't need to hustle for dances because you can make good money from the collections alone. I love the places I work.
And... I don't drive, everywhere I go is accesible by public transport.
Good luck, I hope this helps.

..... Just saw your last post: For the clubs an audition is a a one dance song on stage, usually done during the day. For the agencies I work for an audition is basically your first night at work, I think you'd have to really suck if the don't take you on after that.
Browns and White Horse I don't know first hand but have been told that you have call or email first, then go in and have a photo taken... then an audition.. then... actually I'm not sure what after that. Anybody on here know???

hmmm..so now i really don't know what to do..you're saying that i shouldn't work at the clubs and should work at pubs like white horse and browns...but they have waiting lists and they're picky? i mean..if a place is really picky..i honestly don't think i will be hired. i'm not fat..i have a nice body really, but i'm not toned. i don't jog or anything..after seeing the kinda chicks i worked with back home...yeah. so many of them look like their bodies were carved out of stone.

so are you suggesting i look into agencies then..?

i don't mean to be too choosy about my schedule.. i'm okay with working long hours and all of that..it's just that i intend to work a day job at some point. my goal is to do about the same thing i was doing back home-- veterinary nurse during the day, dancer at night (usually just thurs-sun nights..i drove up to dallas from austin to work). so i need to just start dancing right away..because finding a vet clinic job will take time and i need to start making money....but i don't want to commit to a set schedule (especially full-time! yikes!!) and then get hired for a fantastic vet nurse job and have to pass it up blah blah blah..

arg..i just don't know. i guess that's why i was thinking about just auditioning at one of the SRs and just see how it goes..

seriously..thank you for all of your help!

Sorry, I must be making you more confused. Hopefully someone else will give some advice.

My only experience in London is working for the agencies which I like because it is very flexible and very laid back. I'm stressed with doing an MA so I couldn't cope with working someplace stressful too. I've never worked in the clubs so all I have to go on is friends' experience and they say it is hard hustle, very competitive. You've nothing to lose by going for an audition at SR and getting a feel of the place. It's worth knowing, though, that they charge around £80 a night to work. Secrets is slightly easier (I think) though you still have to hustle. And you can call Browns and White Horse, it doesn't hurt to try. Try them all and decide what's best for you.

Here's what I know of scheduling:
agencies - work whenever you want
browns.. - 5 shifts per week (last I heard)
secrets - you have to do a minimum of one monday or saturday per week, the rest is up to you

    The rest I don't know

sorry haha..i'm just stressed and tired so i'm getting confused easily haha you are really helping me a lot..

the agencies sound cool..how are they as far as hiring goes? super picky too? and they deal mostly with pubs then?

while i'm no hustler..and it does stress me out a bit being in that kind of environment..i'm okay as long as people who don't hustle still make SOME money. the club in dallas was very hustle-hustle..and at that club i still did pretty well (well enough for my own standards)..my friends would get 5 or 600 a night and i would usually get around $300. that was more than good enough for me. those house fees are terrible, but i'm really okay so long as i leave there with SOMETHING left over after house fees. any money is good money to me right now.

secrets sounds pretty cool..i will definitely look into that place..

so SR and stringfellows are basically evening gown only?..do you know which, if any, allow outfits ..because it would just make my life a whole lot easier if i didn't have to buy new clothes just for an audition..

That's a cute outfit, fine for the pubs but Secrets won't allow it, I think SR also want long dresses. It would be ok for Sophisticats too.
Agencies are not fussy, if you want work you just call them. You will be guaranteed work almost immediately with tease and angels.
    Good luck.

okay, so just double checking..the agencies can guarantee me work, even though pubs are generally pretty picky?

and also..you said these are pubs outside of london right? even still you can find transport that will take you out there..? that's really a concern for me..i live in SW19

The agencies supply pubs that are less picky than the WH or Browns, they take most girls on. Browns you contact direct, they interview and photograph you first and then if they are recruiting and you look OK you do an audition in the pub on a normal session. The WH ring direct again they may say we have enough girls already or say come for an audition on a normal session, at the WH you do a jug collection even for your audition. Browns has 6 to 12 girls per shift, WH 4 to 5, both have strict shedules.

Some of the other pubs can be a bit grotty, some are OK most are friendly enough. Pubs tend to open in the day and shut earlier than clubs so public transport is a possibilty, places like Spearmint have 4am licenses so you would need a taxi.

However why not try one or other of the clubs first and see how it suits you, they are more flexible about shifts and because they are desperate to fill the place with fee paying girls they tend to take most girls on. Places like Secrets, Windmill etc recruit nearly every week in the Stage. One place you might look at is Metropolis, it used to be a strip pub and still does jug collections.

The Stage in the UK entertainment industry weekly newspaper. It carries announcements of auditions and a lot of lap dance clubs advertise for girls there. There is a web site , just hit "The stage" on google.

I don't know exactly where SW19 is, the trouble with Metropolis is that it's in the East End and might be a long way away. Out West there is Secrets, Hammersmith plus Route 66 Park Royal, plus LA Confidential in Ealing plus further out Piano Lounge in Twckenham and Inhibitions in Hayes and Spearmint in Colnbrook { where Prince Harry went!}. There are several strip pubs like the Peel in Victoria, Queen anne { bit of a dump} in Vauxhall, Woolpack and Victoria in Hayes, Flags in Slough out that side of London.

All these pubs are served by tease and angels. The Peel is in Kingston, handy for you in SW. It is one of Angels' places, stage show only (jug collection) I love it.

Does Metropolis really have a jug collection? I had no idea. It is a 5 minute walk from my flat yet never actually been there, £80 house fee puts me off

Metropolis was I think the oldest strip pub in London { called the Arabian Arms then} and then the first place in the UK to introduce private dancing. They still did jug collections the last time I went there though there are 3 floors, 2 of which you can't collect in. Compared to Browns there are many more girls and less customers so the jug collections are less lucrative.

It's been owned by the same family for over 30 years, these days it's Steve Martin who in my opinion is a greedy, sleazeball ! Mind you I hear to work in it's no worse than Secrets etc but not a patch on Browns or the White Horse.

southwest london..pretty far out there..merton abbey is where i live..right by wimbledon.. colliers wood is the closest tube stop..the second to last stop on the northern line haha so yeah..i think it's fair to say that metropolis might be a little too far away haha

do you have to be with the agency to work at these places? or does that just help you get the job? ..might check out the peel then..sounds interesting..

i was looking at the websites for those agencies..on the angels one it says they only hire experienced girls..i don't know if i can really call myself "experienced"..only danced for about 4 months back home..and i definitely don't show any experience in my dancing skill..i just do the standard 'sway around the pole' type stuff..

so..metropolis is definitely no "browns" or anything, but it's still pretty good?

let me make sure i've got this straight.. if i could have my pick of any of the dancing jobs here in london, browns or the white horse would be the best by far. BUT..they probably aren't going to be my best bet right now..as they are super picky. so..i should start out at one of these other places or an agency, then try out browns or the white horse in awhile..whenever i feel up to auditioning..

Yes I'd say that though if you like clubs there may be others. The Peel is run via Angels { ex stripper Dawn} these days and is not a bad place. If you like the system there you would like the WH or Browns. If you talk to the girls they generally love the WH as there is no private dancing and no need to hustle however you will only get 2 bookings a week there so you will need to work somewhere else as well. Browns has a sister pub called the Griffin and you can expect 5/6 bookings a week there.

If you have been dancing four months that makes you experienced in my opinion. Don't worry about getting taken on by the agencies, they take most girls.

If I were you I would contact the agencies and try to get some shifts to see how you like it, and contact Browns and WH and find out if they are hiring. You have nothing to lose so don't stress

Let us know how you get on. Good luck.

PS. You can get almost everywhere by public transport.

Send me a message if you need any help.

haha..thank you guys so much for all the help..sorry i'm such a retard and ask so many questions ..i'm just a little stressed and getting used to things here..bit of a culture shock, all the little things are adding up.. and public transport..i've been here before and used it a lot then, but since i moved here i haven't used it pretty much at all since everything i've needed thus far is in walking distance....it's weird accepting the fact that i can't just hop in my car and take off somewhere after 10 years of doing that..

yeah, i think i will contact the agencies..this weekend i'm planning on getting all of this sorted out/deciding what i want to do etc..gonna go look for a dress (if i still plan on auditioning at clubs..) and i'd like to stop in a few places to get an idea what it's like over here. pubs are free to go into right? where are some good places to go check out..to kinda see the main differences between here and the states..? i'd like to go into a club or two..but can't really afford the cover charge haha

so Kabukicho..you said you've worked in the US too right? well um..does one dance differently when dancing fully nude? or is pretty much the same thing you do in the states, just without the thong? i think that's why i want to go to a club/pub first..and see just how different it is here haha!

wow..you guys must be seriously laughing at me! what a tool haha
