    Default baby stuff shopping help

my friends are expecting their first baby soon, and im going shopping this weekend for them, and have no idea what to get!

i have my eye on a pair of gucci sneakers- just something special to pimp him out in early in life hehe but have no idea what else to get him.

ive asked her what she needs for the baby- cos the 'need' stuff is super important, and she said she has no idea, and just buy anything. hmm.

i have about $1000 to spend, and its for a little boy.

all i can think of is the shoes, and random bits of clothing, and she needs a baby book so i have to find a super awesome one.

it has to be small stuff too cos im posting it over, but ill be visiting when its born, and taking her out shopping for anything else he needs- like bigger non postable things.

i know theres heaps of new mummies here, so if anyone has any ideas id totally appreciate it.

( ill never have kids so i wanna totally spoil hers hehehe)

500 Savings Bond (Aussie Equivalent), fire proof safe to put it in, 100 toy store certificate, 300 gorcery certificate. Then a box of it's aboy cigars.

    Oh yeah and ear plugs.

I agree on the bonds. Also, hitting up the health supplies in the infant section of a store or drug store is often helpful. I got my cousin a pacifier that takes temperature... she loved it.

See the fire safe is a heavy ass box. that should keep them guessing. I like certificates. Not as glamorous but the person gets what they want. If their ungrateful for certificates ummmm well are they good friends to start with? You are helping them cover unanticipated needs right?

Don't do gift certificates! When is she gonna have time to go shopping with a newborn?

My mom had three baby boys while I was a teenager, so I know what our family needed for the babies... diapers are always helpful, in different sizes; you can't imagine how many you can go through and they get expensive. Also DON'T buy pretty fancy little outfits. He'll MAYBE get a chance to wear it once before he grows out of it, but they won't want to dress him up just so he can puke on everything. Functional clothing is better - onesies, lots of onesies! They're these little T-shirt type outfits with sleeves and they snap under the crotch. He can just wear one by itself or she can put pants over it. My brothers lived in onesies when they were babies so my mom was always really glad to get those.

Lessee, what else... a bathtub ring might be good for later, a bright colorful rattle or other toy that makes quiet noises... a crib mobile... oh, and socks. Try to make everything very brightly colored. A lot of people get pastels for babies but their eyesight isn't very good and they need lots of color to improve it. They like black and white too, and anything with a face on it. They'll stare at faces all day.

If you're really splurging, maybe a CD of some very soft classical music too, like Mozart or Debussy. It'll relax both her and the baby and help them both sleep, and Lord knows they'll both need sleep. She can also use it to calm the baby and help him nap while she gets other stuff done like laundry or a bath for herself.

And don't forget her. A nice barrette or hair clip, maybe some delivery food service vouchers or something. She won't want to cook but she'll need good food. My mom was always happiest when neighbors would bring over a meal for all of us, so she could rest.

I just went shopping for my girlfriend. She is having a boy too! So for needs I got...

    Recieving blankets
    Booties
Mitts(to prevent them from scratching their face)
    Bottles
Angel Moniter(moniters baby's breathing, alarm sound if stops)
    Crib bedding
    bibs
    Diapers
    wipes
    undershirts
    wash cloths
    playpen
    car seat/carrier/stroller(its a combo)
oodles of outfits ranging in sizes NB to 12mos(they grow fast!)

I don't see a point in spending huge amounts on "pimp wear" for a baby. The money could be better spent on other items that will actually get used.

Burp rags--cloth diapers serve the same purpose.

Shopping cart seat cover, for when the baby is older.

One of those baby carriers, you know the ones that you strap to yourself? I think it's called a Baby Bjorn?

    Diapers and wipes--lots of them!!

Find out what kind of bottles, if any she will be using and get some of those.

    Bibs

    Pacifiers

Receiving blankets--the stretchy thermal ones are GREAT!

    Beanies

    Booties

Make sure the clothing you get is 3-6 month, any smaller and they grow out VERY quickly, especially if she has a big baby!

A kit to baby proof her house.

An ear thermometer--kinda like the doc uses.

    Baby monitor.

I know I repeated a few, but I just kinda had a stream of things going thru my mind!! Happy shopping!!

Aside from what has already been mentioned here (which are all fantastic), a breast pump! The good ones are almost $200! I hope she is planning on breastfeeding anyway.

Gucci shoes...ehhhh....he'll grow out of them in like, two seconds and that money could be spent more on the things he'll really need.

I sort of think shoes are a waste of time for a small baby although a cute idea. Their feet can grow so fast and they really dont need shoes half the time. Although on the other hand alot of people get their babies first shoes brassed or whatever it is, so maybe that would be cool.
I think a savings bond is a great idea. I also loved gift certificates - shoping with a newborn isnt such a big deal and you can save the certificates anyway for when your ready. When you have a baby people tend to give you so much for the first year or so of a babies life, its nice to have the choice to buy some stuff for later on.
The most useful thing I got given when I had my son was a babies portable chair. It was a comfy seat thing that sat the baby upright. It had handles and Tom could just sit in it for the first few months of his life and watch what I was doing and I could move him around from place to place as i did house work and stuff. It was just for the home, not for taking out. Unfortunatly I dont know who made it or anyting /-:
There are some really cool toys around too - Myer and david Jones have quality stuff and some wonderful things. Avoid noisey toys though if you get toys, lol lol!!!!!!!!!!!

EXACTLY! Shit, Hunter's 5 months and I still have to struggle to get out the door by myself just to go to the market!

Savings Bonds are great! It'll come in handy for when he gets older. I had a ton that I fell back on when I hit 21. They were life-savers.

The sneakers? Eh.. They may be cute and all, but I really don't know many who put their kids in shoes the first year. As a matter of fact, Pediatricians tell you these days NOT to be shoes on until they're actually walking.

Is she planning on nursing? If so, I suggest the Boppy pillow. Get her a few pretty slip-covers to go with it so she change the covers from time-to-time. It honestly works well even if she'll be bottle-feeding.

If she IS nursing, a Hospital-Grade breastpump would be a GREAT gift for her. I say "Hospital Grade", because the little cheapo ones aren't made to use daily, or multiple times a day. And I suggest that you get a double-pump. It'll save her heaps of time.

I think everyone else has covered just about anything else.

    Happy Shopping!

Do they live someplace that gets cold? If so, what about one of the warm covers that fits over a carseat. I have one and I love it! It's so much easier than trying to get her in her snowsuit. The big ones are too bulky to put on when they're riding in the car.

Honestly, since you want to get small things and have a lot to spend, got the baby a silver rattle. I had one, all my sibs did....

it's the baby version of a grill, very pimp!!!!
The 2nd one is what I get anytime I need a baby gift. A silver spoon is also sweet! and every baby deserves one I love this car one:

A sterling silver rattle?? WTF?? Silver tarnishes so easily and the baby would just be putting his drooly mouth all over it. Why spend $250 on a rattle, especially when it's going to get all tarnished?

teething toys that teach shapes and colors are good. a little early but a good standby. my kids had a dumbbell shaped one that squeaked on one end and had a little red ball that floated along the "handle" portion. very "in" at that time back in *mumble*.

diapers and wipes like glamazon suggested are also safe bets. hundreds of diapers! some stinky trash cans are also a good bet. there's some products now out that deal with the toxic waste pretty well.

formula (if they go for that) is another good option. but there are a lot of choices nowadays. check to see what they'd like, soy-based or not.

they have video baby monitors nowadays. and maybe an extra webcam or tie-in so the parent not at home can look in from work.

gift certificates for a cleaning service is an unusual one that would likely be very appreciated though imo. new-born parents tend to be sleep and time deprived after the first couple of weeks. it ain't a pretty sight.

for those on a budget, a get-out-of-house card for "alone time" can be very helpful.

my philosphy is the baby's gonna get gifts no matter what, the parent should get something too. congrats to your friends! welcome to the rest of their lives!

DIAPERS. They are going to need plenty of them. Get them in different sizes too because the baby might grow faster than expected. Recieving blankets and lots of health supplies. Also get an ear themometer. There is one at Wal mart for 20. It gives you the exact temperature and trust me it works. Get diaper rash cream too. And this may sound crazy but also disinfectant spay (lysol, etc.) The smallest thing can cause the baby to get sick so that would be good to spray on certain things. And a vicks vaporizer machine. It keeps the baby from getting sick. It works perfectly too.

I think the rattle is something you can keep for life... you can't save one of those plastic ones til you're 40, that's for sure.

Ha, I totally forget what they're called too! Yes they enable you to wear your baby like an item of jewlery and are pretty handy in that "look no hands" type of way which is extremely useul!
