Default anthor day on the calnder to pig out

This is kinda of a rant i realy want opiones on. Its realy starting to annoy that there is a huge obesity problem in america and everytalks about it all the time and americans spend millions on pill, books and other shit to help them loose wieght but ever single month of the year there is a day set aside that is centerd around pigging out this month is chocaltate for v day mest easter there is always something and most people use these days to justfy a week of poor eating habits. I have enough of this I am not getting chocalte for v day I got flowers and a cute little pink ipod shuffle. I was watching good moring america this am and of course they were showing the gifts to give that are full of sugar and crap but just the other day they were pushing the lastest diet fad. Get a clue people this epidimic is never going to change unless we change are habits. end rant

America and most developed countries are ridiculously misinformed about what is actually a healthy diet. Nothing makes you fat quicker than sugar, not even fat. The tons of salt and red meat most of us consume is actually very detrimental to our bones. But . . . meh, I doubt the majority is going to adopt a proper food style anytime soon.

I have the Harvard Healthy Eating Pyramid as my computer's wallpaper (to keep me on track) and when my b/f saw it, he screamed out, 'What the hell is this? This pyramid is all wrong. It has meat and cheese all the way on the top. They should be the cornerstones of this thing!!!" This is of course coming from a man who is hopelessly addicted to Jack in the Box. I'm not as bad as him but God help anyone who tries to take away White Bread Tuesday from me, lol.

One of my most infamous lines among friends, 'But . . . but it's Bread Day . . . *lip quivers and eyes well up*"

    Agreed. (puts orange sherbet away).

I'm just trying to figure out what the pig out days for June and August are. Well, they are over the summer when kids are out of school, vacations are likely to occur and even when you're home, Dad is likely to be grilling something on the que every night. I guess thats reason enough.

I totally do agree about America's eating habits in general, and especially in re: sugar and simple empty carbs.

However . . . it has always always always been human nature to include a feast as a part of celebration. Holidays and major life events alike. I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with that. I'd say that if we were healthier in our day-to-day lives, as a society, maybe we'd feel even more free to celebrate through feasting - on those special occasions.

I'm a food lover, though. After decades of resisting it, I refuse to deny it any more.

I'm a total foodie. I grew up wanting to be a chef, been in restaurants since I was 15 and have worked in some the best kitchens around. Food is not the enemy! A lack of respect for where and how your food gets to your plate is, repsecting your body enough to care what goes in it is essential. We've become so disassociated with our food it's sad. We would be able to appreciate "feasting" so much more if we didn't take food for granted.

OMG, I just realized what a hippy I must sound like

I just love food so much I can't help it!

Amen to Mandy! There's nothing wrong with the occasional feast day. The problem is that we Americans have no sense of moderation. If something is deemed unhealthy, it is BAD and you should never, ever have ANY of it! And if something is deemed good for you, then you should GORGE and GORGE and eat absolutely nothing else. Neither approach is healthy. All things in moderation! Have chocolate for Valentine's Day, just don't eat the whole damn box. Share it. Have wine, it's got antioxidants; just don't drink the whole bottle. Share it. And so on.
