    Default apartment question

ah, the perils of being a stripper and trying to rent!

I've found a place where I'd really like to live, and I'm going to have to have my mother co-sign. (I've made less than $20k last year, simply because I didn't work much and I only started dancing last June.)

The only possible problem is the background check. My credit is perfect, I've got a solid rental history, and all that. But when they're doing the background check...will they give any information they find to my mother, since she's my guarantor?

She doesn't know I dance, and she would literally disown me if she found out. I can't ask my much-more-liberal father to co-sign, because his credit is shot. My grandparents live on a fixed income in Sicily, so that's no help. There's no one else I could get to co-sign.

So are the results of my background check confidential? Will they even find out where I work, since my city doesn't require licenses or anything? Do they have a right to release my info to my mother?

There is no reason that they should tell your mom anything. If you have good credit and your club will vouch for your income, you should be able to get the apartment without your mom's cosign anyways. Might be safer that way, just in case the apartment lady gets chatty.

I would ask the leasing agent to guarantee that your personal info is kept personal. That way you know for sure. Usually when you authorize anyone to do a credit check, you give them permission to check into your history and it will say if they are allowed to share your info with anyone else on teh document you sign.

just talk to the lady, don't worry too much. Explain that your motehr has old-fashioned views and the two of you really don't talk much about what you do for a living because it upsets her. I don't think the leasing agent is going to want to upset your motehr when she needs her to cosign to gain you as a customer.

wouldn't it be breaking the law if the realtor gave your mum information? ie. disclosing personal information?

It's legal if her mom is cosigning for her. She has the legal right to know how the other cosigner intends to pay the rent. If the apartment manager chooses not to tell her, awesome... but the manager isn't legally obligated to keep the secret.
