    Default Synonym for 'faggot'

I don't want to risk my mark...the sentence is:

"The basic energy source of a CANDU nuclear reactor comes from its fuel bundles. Fuel bundles consist of 28, 37 or 43 half meter-long rods of U-235, bundled into faggots weighing approximately 20kg."

Maybe it's just too late, but I can't for the life of me think of a synonym! Bundle, but I can't figure out how to put it in ("bundled into bundles"?)!

Curses, why did I have to think I was so goddamn funny whne I was writing my rough draft.

    ETA: I tried the thesaurus...

It's just as proper with one "g," or "fagot," to distinguish it from the pejorative term.

How about "gathered in bundles" instead? "Bundled in aggregates"? "Wrapped in bundles"?

Edit: Now that I'm looking, I'm going for "gathered in aggregates," because you have a fair repetition of "bundle" in there already.

Just call it a faggot. Based on the context of the sentence, it's obvious what you mean.

I thought faggots were bundles of sticks?

^^^ It's a bundle of anything that can be used for fuel. Usually sticks, but it works here too.

    Thanks guys!

I don't know my prof well enough to know if the word is OK, and it's also kind of archaic, I don't want to distract from the point of the paper. I lost marks once for using the word 'peruse' in the proper sense (as opposed to popular usage); I don't want a repeat.

My brain is working again: 'separated into bundles' it is, that fits and it's simple.

Yeah, the "separated into bundles" thing does work, but fagot should really be perfectly acceptable. (Unless this is British-English, there's only one g in the non-male-homosexual version.) I've seen it recently in a few publications, and it didn't seem to be a big deal.

"Fag" and "faggot" are slang terms for cigarettes because a cigarette resembles an actual faggot, which is a bundle of wood and/or leaves that one burns for fuel. So I understand that slang term. What I don't understand is how that term came to be applied to homosexuals.

This reminds me of the time I made a bad typo on a midterm paper and got summoned to a meeting with the department head. After that, I learned that no matter how tired you are, a proofreading is in order. Oh my.

^^^I think it has something to do with "flaming?"

Nothing wrong with that term, but if you want to avoid it, the fuel rods are bundled into assemblies or arrays. The Russians use an RBMK reactor that is close to that design, where we also use the term "assemblies" in translation in the West, but the Canadian design is a PHWR reactor, quite similar in design.

You will never go wrong with "fuel assemblies" in an RBMK or PHWR reactor design.
