Default Guiliani confirms 2008 presidential campaign

Giuliani to run in 2008 By JoAnne Allen
    1 hour, 17 minutes ago

Former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, acclaimed for his leadership after the September 11 attacks, confirmed he is running for U.S. president in 2008, eliminating any lingering doubt about his candidacy.

"Yes, I'm running," Giuliani declared twice on Wednesday night on CNN's "Larry King Live" show.

There have been doubts among Republicans about whether Giuliani was serious about a White House run in 2008.

National polls have shown Giuliani leads eight other Republicans, in part because of his steely and comforting leadership amid the chaos of the 2001 hijacked plane attacks that brought down New York's most visible landmark.

"I think I can make a difference. I believe that the country needs leadership," Giuliani said on CNN when asked what led him to purse the top political job in the United States.

Earlier this month, Giuliani filed a statement of candidacy with the Federal Election Commission establishing a committee to explore a presidential bid, but he stopped short of making a formal announcement.

Giuliani became one of the Republican Party's most popular figures after September 11. However, he faces an uphill battle winning over conservatives who wield considerable influence in party primaries because of his stance on some social issues, including his support for gay rights and abortion rights.

Damn, this is going to be an exciting run for the White House in '08. Personally, I don't think he will get the nomination but it's going to be an interesting fight.

I am fairly certain the Guiliani will be the next president. I'm not sure how to feel about it though.

What, and the Republicans being elected nowadays are adhering to the original party platform?

You show me a Republican politician nowadays who believes in small limited government and REALLY cutting spending, and I'll show you someone who's just lost his seat.

Its going to be a fun election! Perhaps they should move our capital to Hollywood, or maybe the CNN headquarters? Or better yet, they should move it to the house of the "Girls Gone Wild" guy....what a zoo its going to be!

I guess after Americans voted Bush for president for two terms. I guess everybody feel they can run for president. I cant not knock the man for he has hope.

translation - major media plays a larger role in the election ( or dismissal ) of a potential candidate than his qualifications or his track record do ! IMHO that not only amounts to a sad situation, but virtually guarantees that any truly 'good' candidates aren't electable.

with about 3 exceptions - Dr. Ron Paul being the major one. However, due to the earlier point about major media, 98% of Americans outside of Texas have absolutely no idea who Ron Paul is ... let alone the fact that he has also formed a presidential election committee.

Unlikely, as the Christian South and Midwest will never nominate him--they'd rather put up a candidate like Romney and lose, than put up Giuliani who can win votes from the middle and left.

The pendulum has swung the other way now, and will for some time to come, thanks to the completely counterproductive and self-destructive behavior of the GOP in the last six years.

well it should be interesting. On paper it seems doubtful he could pass through a republican primary.

    * He tried to bring his future third wife into Gracie Mansion in an attempt to get his second wife to leave; when courts said no, he moved in with a few gay friends until his second wife and their children moved out

He SEEMS like he'd be a good president. I agree with his SUPPOSED viewpoints, and I do indeed admre his experience and the way he handled 9/11. But what would he really be like? No one ever knows.

Guiliani is my favorite so far from the republican side because he is at least a social liberal on most those type of issues anyway. Even so, I'd much rather see a democrat in the white house next time around. I'm hoping for a Clinton/Edwards win with Obama and Richardson appointed to other top positions. Obama, imho , needs more national experience and Richardson is pretty good at international relations.

Either way billions of dollars in federal taxes collected from taxpayers in other states will be funneled back into New York !

Guiliani is the kind of Republican the country needs, he's not a close minded right wing crazy asshole....If he does go head to head with someone, I hope to God he wins. Especially if it's against Hillary.

It REALLY doesn't matter all that much WHO wins. Whichever candidate ultimately takes off in Jan. '09 is going to have to deal with Iraq, Iran, the deficit and theTRILLIONS in unfunded S.S. ; Medicare and Medicaid liability. The first of the aby-Boomers hit 62 next year. Decades of inaction on entitlement reform are going to bite EVERYONE's ass. And how ! This has been predicted since the late 70's and Congress, Carter, Reagan ( he tried and was vilified ), Clinton and both Bushes failed to address the problem.
Add in Billions in unfunded State and Municiapal liabilities plus corporate and private pensions and health plans that are under-reserved and we've got an economic Doomsday rapidly approaching.
We should have raised the retirement ages back in the 80's to 68 & 70. Reagan tried but Tip O'Neill & Claude Pepper clobbered him for it and he backed down.
Perot warned us in '92 but we went with Der Slickmeister instead.

That's why when I hear Hillbillary and Edwards trotting around spouting off about INCREASING entitlements ( and creating a big fat new one with National Health Care ) it amazes me that they or anyone could possibly be serious. Or be taken seriously by anyone who can balance a checkbook.
