Default Can't Wake Up In The Morning

Ugh, I'm so disappointed in myself. I skipped my first 2 classes today. (11am and 12pm)

Here is what happens: I work a school night, like last night. I get there somewhere between 7-10pm, they won't let me go home until close, like everyone else. Close is about 2:30am. I go home, take a shower, get into bed about 3:30, set my alarm for 10am.
Morning comes, I turn my alarm off, I don't give a fuck about school, anything except more sleeping. Afternoon comes, I wake up, realize I've missed classes and get sad.
It's like my body can't tolerate getting less than eight hours of sleep and screw what my consciousness thinks.

How do you girls get up in the morning after working nights?
Or, how do I convince the club to let me leave early?
I know some girl work split shift, about 4pm-12am, but I can't get in that early because of school and even then I hear split girls bitching about how they club won't let them leave at midnight because there aren't enough dancers that night.

I take a nap during the day between my "daytime" stuff and getting ready for work.

What Austin club doesn't let you leave early? I suggest GETTING there earlier, so they see you've put your time in and let you leave early. Or work mid-shifts. I'm the same, there are only so many days I can sleep less than 8 hours until I say "fuck it" and sleep it.

Man I had to quit working school nights...that almost made me fail my sophmore year. The only way I could wake up on weekdays after work was to stay with someone who would force me up...other than that I would just miss class even with three alarm clocks...I had to stop cause school is WAY more important.

I just learned about this today. It is a class of stimulant drugs used by the military to help soldiers stay awake and alert when sleep is just not possible. They are called eugeroics. It is a stimulant that basically allows a person to think clearly and to stay alert when sleep is not possible. No stoned feelings, no jitters, no major crash or side effects. The only down side is :
    1. It is by prescription only, otherwise it is illegal
    2. Sleep deprivation can be really bad for you. These drugs have a large potential for abuse as they have no side effects or "hang over" type of feelings and are not addictive.

Take later classes, or don't work the nights before. This semester I have all my classes packed into two days, Mondays and Wednesdays, and I don't work late either of the nights before (I used to not work at all those days). I also stopped trying to take 8am classes, and made my earliest class at 11am. School is uber important, but it doesn't help you if you don't go, so do what you can to schedule so you can get enough sleep. Good luck

When I have to drag myself out of bed early the next morning, I crawl out of bed and hit the coffee pot, or green tea. The caffeine gets me going and then I pop a couple of ephedrines on top of that. Gets me going when I need it.

Thanks for the suggestions, ladies. I WILL schedule differently next semester, but I still have until May for now!
I have school Monday-Friday. I can't really afford to only work Friday and Saturday

I couldn't work school nights either...It killed me! I'd be too lazy shower in the morning, and just walk to school in my jammies, barely make it through my classes, oh it was horrible. I arranged my schedule so that I work in the daytime now...I have early early classes, then work till 7...it's a little easier.

I eventually just worked about 8 shifts a month when I was in school. I absolutely could not, no way in *hell* get down to UT for anything before noon if I'd worked the night before. So it was either this: take morning classes and work day shift, where at least you're off by 6 or 7 pm; schedule everything for either T Th or MWF and work the nights when you don't have class the next day; or just work weekends.

Oh, also, really maximize your time at work to where you can get by on two shifts a week. There's no reason a college kid can't do that (unless you have kids).

Are you at the Yellow Rose? Expose? Those are the only two clubs I can think of that are less leave-early friendly. Try tipping your way out of the situation. But in all seriousness, if you're coming in that late to begin with (say 9-10pm) I don't see the usefulness in leaving early or the reason why they would let you go since you're there for a comparatively short time.

Yeah, get there at 5. You'll catch the guys coming in for a drink after work to avoid traffic. I believe dances are $10 or 2-4-1 during that time, but hey, its an easy sell, just keep moving.

I'm sure you can come to an agreement with DK or Kenny to let you leave at midnight if you come in at 5.

I'm not even going to answer your question, but I'm going to give advice- I don't care HOW tired you are, get up. And try to stay on a stable schedule.

Because, once you get into the habit of sleeping in (even if it's just to get your 8 hours instead of 6), and blowing off school/day job/etc. you will eventually find yourself tied to the night and it WILL become a problem.

For example, let's say you have to call the water company, but you worked until 4AM (as some clubs in Austin are open that late), you'd get home and into bed around 5, and have to sleep until 1. Then you get up, shower, eat, then realize "fuck, it's 4PM and the water company closed" or it's 3PM and the bank closed, or it's 2 and you have school at 1:30.

I know a lot of college girls who succedded best by doing one of the following:

    1) Just suck it up - it's only for a few years and you're young. Nap after class if you must.
    2) Take distance learning or weekend courses.
    3) Work midshifts (4-12), or ONLY work weekends. Try to build your school schedule around dancing.

I can say that I did NOT follow any of that advice, and it is taking me forever to get my Associates Degree because I keep dropping classes. Once you get into the nasty habit of blowing stuff off, it's hard to get rid of.

I'm doing better now, but for a while there.. not so much!

    Good luck

After school, take a 90 minute nap before work. Anythign longer will make you groggy, and you might not be able to wake up, but it is a long enough nap to re energize you.

I am the same exact way as you. I coudl have written that post. When I was a nurse....my boss refused to schedule me to see clients before 11am, because I slept in so much for eariler appointments. I am just mroe of a night person. But shit, If I dont get enough sleep..I have been known to sleep in for work that I had to start at 8pm! Im just a sleepy girl I guess.

This is an old post, but thanks girls! I'm still having a problem with it, in fact.

I just fucking love sleeping! I have a tempurpedic bed maybe that's the problem

Next semester I have no classes before 12:30 at the earliest, hopefully that will help.

Take more online classes & fewer regular classes next semester. I'm a major sleepyhead too.

It will help you alot. One semester I had classes starting at 11:30 and even that was too early. When you dont get to bed until 3am its early. I start all my classes at noon or later so that I can work the night before and try to get enough sleep.

Another tip. If you have your classes scheduled back to back make food the day of your night shift the day before school and bring that food with you. Have stuff you can grab and go to keep you awake and ready for classes.

modafinil (known on the market as provigil) does not work consistently, it must be taken hours before you get tired (it only delays the onset of the sleep impulse, and is not a true stimulant in the classic sense), and can lead to a kind of grainy, inadequate sleep the first time you sleep after taking a couple of doses.

scientists still do not actually know the drug's operant mechanism(s). also, it's only been on the market a very short time and long-term side effects are quite uncertain.

all that said, it does keep one alert and awake if taken correctly about 70 percent of the time (a modest percentage of doses don't 'take' and produce no effects). it is worth a shot on a very temporary basis to establish better sleeping patterns. it is prescribed off-label for add/adhd mainly, but also for other things.

This is a really tough problem actually, I know how you feel. During school I had two jobs, one that required me to start at 6am a couple days a week and another that required me to stay til 11pm or midnight a couple of other nights. It was hellish.

When you are so tired, you rationalize everything when you wake up. "Oh, I have an exam today, oh well I'll make it up later." "I'm only allowed to miss two classes per quarter and this will be my 3rd, oh well it's only 10pts off my grade, I can afford to lose that." The easiest way I've found, like someone else said, is to just MAKE yourself get up. Convince yourself that you're only going to the bathroom and then coming back to bed if you want. Make yourself get up, get to the bathroom, adjust your eyes to the light, and brush your teeth. By then you're already up, so you might as well get ready.

For me it was a money issue. I was paying for school, so I was going to get my money's worth. I'd be pretty pissed if I was paying off 17,000 now when all I did was sleep in and miss classes.
