    Protecting Furniture from cats

The place I'm about to move into is partly furnished. I want to protect the sofa lounge that is not mine and is part of the unit from the claws of the cats especially my flatmate's cat (he has a habit of clawing furniture when he wants to get your attention - he uses a cardboard box as his usual scratching post).

Would putting bubble wrap on the parts that I am sure (because he has done so on the same parts of my sofa lounge) he will claw help me not claw it in the long run? Anything else I can put on there that is a more permanent deterrant and/or can be removed once we move and leave the furniture intact (as such) ?

Something sticky. They hate getting their paws caught. They also have things like bitter apple at the pet store that pets don't like the smell of.

Put double sided tape on it... after about 2 months you can take it off and the cat will be too chicken shit to try again.

I don't know if Australia has claw-caps (softpaws).

Cats hate perfume. Try getting something ( as strong as you can handle) on the places you don't want the cat to scratch.

Cats hate the smell of citrus fruit. Maybe get some of those REALLY citrusy body sprays from Bath & Body Works and keep it regularly applied? The bubble wrap isn't a bad idea either, if you don't mind the way it looks. And yes, sticky stuff works too. I trained a cat out of clawing the sofa once by rigging up some duct tape with the sticky side out. It only took a week or two.

Yep, two sided tape. You can even get it in sheets.

I'd just FedEx the cat to Siberia.

^^ I actually like the little evil bastard! So that isn't an option.

I may try the double sided tape at first and see what the vet has to say about claw caps (if he can supply them and put them on him).

Also have some bitter apple (or similiar) around to spray on the furniture that I don't want him to touch (as a back up).

My cat really can't be bothered clawing anything these days.

Actually, I was joking when I said that.

I don't really complain about mine very much. I can't. If I do, Fletcher, the youngest, threatens to publish the pictures from the faculty Christmas party.

So, the cats pretty much have things their way here.

I have a cloth sofa cover on mine. Just to save it from all the cat fur. If I had an issue with claws, I'd use double sided tape. cats hate it and will eventually stop going up there. I've used it pretty successfully around my house. I'd suggest finding something heavy-duty though. Once fur gets on standard double-sided tape, it loses all of it's stickiness. Industrial double-sided tape is wonderful.

To get mine away from the furniture, I just bought a really tall scratching post that had 3 levels on it. They hang out on it all the time and never mess with the couches anymore. Cats like high places because it makes them feel powerful (king of the mountain type of thing). It's kind of funny watching them battle it out for the top spot. Sprinkle a little catnip on it when you first get it and they will never leave it alone!

If the tape doesn't work, you should just get a post. It's a bit expensive but worth saving your furniture and making them happy.
I can't understand why people would de-claw their cats. It is so cruel. I always say people shouldn't have an animal if they care more about furniture than the pain of the animal.

I'm okay with the cat scratching my furniture as it already pre-scrached Just concerned about that which is NOT mine considering I'm not even allowed to have cats in this unit in the first place. So I want to "guide" them (well one of them mainly as the other one - mine - doesn't scratch anything anymore as she is too weak to do so these days) to use my furniture as a scratching post.

I'll go with the double sided tape. Catnip does nothing for both of the cats.

Hello_Kitty27: Where did you get the cloth sofa cover? I would love to be able to save those sofas from the cat hair that is going to get on them.

I'll still find out about the claw caps from the vet on Monday (I refuse to de-claw the cat as that is inhuman ... claw caps are fine).

    Plus buy some bitter apple.

i fyou have a pet store like...petsmart or petco in your area there is a prodcut that..i can't remember the name of it. anyway a friend used it on his chair, its like a sticky sheet that you pt on sections it worked great for him. there are also sparays that are supposed to deter the cat from scratching...dont get that stuff. i used it on a rug that my cats keep clawing up...it attracts them like catnip.

thank you ....thank you for not wanting to declaw your cat! i've worked in vet hospitals (one day i'll get to collecge and be a vet tech....one day) its hideous to watch the procedure. most people dont realize what it is tha the vet does to their cats, i've explained it to people i know and they're all freaked out now; "OMG! i'm never doing that to my cat!".

Bitter Apple probably won't work. It's to keep pets from chewing or licking things, not scratching them. I don't think it has a smell to it, it just tastes bad, and your cat probably isn't going to be putting his mouth on the furniture.

How is he for getting his nails trimmed? I clip my kitty's nails once a week, and they're kept so short and dull that way, his scratching is really limited. I'd say try that, in conjunction with some citrus spray. Satsuma from Body Shop- my cat hates that stuff.

You can clip a cat's nails with regular nail trimmer's too- just don't cut the pink quick, obviously. Maybe get someone to hold him on his side the first few times. Some of them won't let you do it by yourself.

cats hate aluminum foil. if you can tape some of that on, they wont claw, also as others have said, anything sticky will work.

I'm the last person who will ever got the extent to de-clawing the cat. I'm a huge animal lover and wannabe protector (well my idea lifestyle is to earn enough money passively so that I can devote alot of time to fostering animal shelter animals as well as rehabilitate native wildlife such as wombats).

Do that already yet sometimes they grow back faster than I can clip them and sometimes I am not even home for weeks at a time (2-3 weeks) due to work and since I am the nail clipper in the household (the cats only tolerate me doing it) they can tear up stuff. It's the reason why I am considering the soft claws as I'm not always going to be around to clip their claws.

My flatmate takes care of them in other ways.

I'd like to point out that allowing cats to claw one thing but not another (your furniture vs. Landlords) is likely to highly confuse the cat. Cats don't understand 'good' and 'bad' furniture. They understand that a rope is the best thing for claws and are more apt to use a scratcher, but from a behavioral standpoint, allowing one type of 'misbehaving' but not another is likely to confuse kitty.

I saw a product at www.petedge.com that are like little caps you can put on your cats nails to keep them from doing damage to your furniture. I have also heard of people having acrylic put on a cats nails.

^^^ That's what is called Soft Paws. I'm going to speak with my vet about him putting them on the cats whilst they are boarding with them.

Morr: You are right. I will just have to go out and purchase a scratching post on top of everything else I have purchased already for them. Oh they are sooooo spoilt! Any my flatmate is in soooo much debt to me now.

So far I have bought some Cat Grass and a Feliway Diffuser (plus a refill) and now will also be purchasing Soft Paws and some Stud Pants. The Stud Pants is for the male cat mainly as mine isn't a threat in the 'marking' department due to her illness.

However since I can't sew to save my life.... what I will purchasing tho' is http://www.thevetshed.com/catalog/pr...oducts_id=1363

What are stud pants for? I've never heard of them. Could see having them for a queen in heat, maybe, but a tom?
