So I'm doing one of my favorite things, hanging out in a cool used bookstore, and I see a NEW book, called "300". It was one of these big illustrated novel-type books.
The Greek helmet on the front cover clues me in instantly that this has got to be about Thermopylae, the coolest battle ever. So I snatched it up, gladly paying the full price for a new book.
I read it, it was pretty decent, and very well-illustrated. If a little fantasy-oriented, especially where Xerxes' appearance and that of his Immortals is concerned. Herodotus might be pissed, but only a little, since the basic story is being glorified and carried on yet further.
Now I see they are making a movie, and it's getting serious publicity--I can't wait to see it!
I was a bit amused by the emphasis on the fact they are fighting for "Freedom", etc.--but meanwhile the Spartan state was based on its imposition of slavery/serfdom upon the neighboring Messenians.

I'd be lying if I said it was amazing and cool, but shit, it doesn't bother me anymore.
