    Default 300

So I'm doing one of my favorite things, hanging out in a cool used bookstore, and I see a NEW book, called "300". It was one of these big illustrated novel-type books.

The Greek helmet on the front cover clues me in instantly that this has got to be about Thermopylae, the coolest battle ever. So I snatched it up, gladly paying the full price for a new book.

I read it, it was pretty decent, and very well-illustrated. If a little fantasy-oriented, especially where Xerxes' appearance and that of his Immortals is concerned. Herodotus might be pissed, but only a little, since the basic story is being glorified and carried on yet further.

Now I see they are making a movie, and it's getting serious publicity--I can't wait to see it!

I was a bit amused by the emphasis on the fact they are fighting for "Freedom", etc.--but meanwhile the Spartan state was based on its imposition of slavery/serfdom upon the neighboring Messenians.

Frank Miller's graphic novel 300 came out in like '99.
I think they're just pushing it again because of the movie.

*Frank Miller also did the Sin City series.

This has all the hallmarks of a movie I would love... but for some reason I find the trailer irritating. K thinks it looks great, and I've actually mentioned before that the Battle of Thermopylae would be an excellent movie. And I agree, usually this kind of trailer would really excite me. But something about this one just rubs me the wrong way; I think it looks dumb.

I dunno. If K wants to go see it, I'll probably go just for the hell of it. Maybe I'll like it.

This is going to be one of those must see movies for me this year.
Guy #1: I'd totally hit that.

The best work on Thermopylae I ever read (Okay, the only book about it I ever read) is "Thermopylae: The Battle for the West" by Ernle Bradford. Damn good history.

There are monuments at the pass were they fought and died. Its now very close to the shoreline, as the centuries of erosion has wiped out the beaches that the Persians landed on.

Well, the previews indicate the same fantasy treatment of the story as was in the book--this will not be an accurate historical film, other than the basic story.

For instance, the Spartans wore breastplates and substantial hanging pleats of leather to protect the groin, not just tiny jockstraps behind those shields. The female viewers will no doubt pardon this little inaccuracy, lol...

Having read the graphic novel, I am prepared to dispense with historical detail, and am definitely ready for a great battle movie.

What would be really great is to see the planned movie on the same subject: Gates of Fire, based on the excellent historical novel by Steven Pressfield, but apparently it has been postponed, even though George Clooney was very involved in trying to bring it out.

It would be historically accurate, for the most part, and no doubt just as thrilling, except maybe to the females who would see a lot less male flesh, lol...

    More power to ya, lol!

I could care less, but it'll make it much easier to take a date to the movie instead of seeing it alone.

I've grown completely used to seeing movies alone. I'd be lying if I said it was amazing and cool, but shit, it doesn't bother me anymore.

Miller gets to me, sometimes he's on, sometimes he's trying so hard it comes through. 300 was great, but I dunno, it didn't pull me in. I kept trying to figure out how he keeps making it get WORSE.
