    Default i'm freaking scared.

ok, so a little under a year ago i was constantly getting phone calls from a blocked number. every other day, between 2am and 8am. they were pretty regular, and the guy (i think) would just breathe really heavy into the phone, like clearly on purpose. if i didnt answer, they left a message like that. after it went on for about 2 months, i called the phone company and the police. the phone company said they couldn't tell me the number without a court order, and the police basically said they had better things to do. i had a guy come out so i could file a report, i spent a few nights on the phone with an officer crying because i was so scared, and nothing came of it. they said they couldnt do anything until something happened. well, they tapered off and i only got a blocked call every once in a while, but no more messages, so i kind of forgot about it.

tonight though.. i dont know why i picked up the blocked number, but i did, and it was mr heavy beather. i swear if it starts up again i dont know what i'll do! i live alone and i'm back at my old club so i'm working later at night now and this is really scaring me. the police won't help me though, so i dont know what to do!! i thought if i ignored the calls long enough they would stop but i guess i'm wrong.

the scariest part was that when i moved to my new apt last august and got a landline, the first night, before anyone knew the number, i had an unavailable number on my caller id with a message on my answering machine with just breathing. what can i do???

For starters you may want to get a stun gun with at least 100,000 volts with a wrist strap disable pin that will prevent the stun gun from being used against you. A friend from my college had used one when a raper attacked her and it saved her life. However they may be illegal so check out the laws/risks before you get one if you decide to get one.

Also, you may want to switch to a dayshift. Safety first.

As far as the phone calls, I dont know if switching the # would help but switching phone companys may help.

Yeah, I'd consider changing the home phone number. And buy some mace or pepper spray just in case anything should happen.

Can you change your number, have them make it unlisted and to not allow blocked calls? That should help. And if you still end up getting calls, I would begin to wonder if it's someone you know..

Well, yeah, but there are tons of places where that would be illegal, and even if you use the gun in 100% self-defense mode where it is illegal to do so, you will be charged for illegal possession of a firearm. So while it's great in theory, I'm not sure if the gun laws where she's at. That being said, if that's an option, by all means go for it.

i have pepper spray, and i'm never really scared in my apartment. at first i thought it might be a friend, but who really goes through all that trouble for a year?? i could change my number, but i just didn't want to go through all that with giving out my new number to people, because if it *is* someone i know, they'll have it anyway, ya know? plus, if they want it that bad to find out my home number the day i got it.. that just creeps me out!

that is some scary shit. i second the stun-gun (if you can have it). i'd think about changing your numbers again but then very selectively give out your mobile and landlines, i.e. no one gets both.

but this quote really got me thinking.

that really narrows down the possible culprits imo. maybe someone that has access to your mail? someone that helped you move? anything that might hold a microphone or something similar, i know that sounds a bit paranoid but unusual situations calls for unusual answers. check your computer for spyware and such. emails, etc.

some things you might want to do with the authorities and phone companies: make your complaints in writing, make sure you start documenting how many times this nutball has been calling, and go back as far as you can to document this.

send these complaints in certified mail to these douchebags, i mean the authorities and phone companies.

you might want to consider filing the complaint to get the phone company to release the information on the phone number. four or five wrong number calls may not warrant such a release but if you can tally up a LOT of info and history, that points to psychotic (dangerous) behaviour. and a much stronger case to force such a release.

and once you get the info, then cut his balls off. legally/figuratively, of course.

^^ the only person who helped me move was my dad. and literally no one else had the number, but since it got put in my name i guess it can be found out. i've called the phone company and they won't help me. i had a list of dates and times for both them and the cops and still nothing. i guess if it's been going on for a year and nothing else but the phone calls have happened maybe i should just ignore it?

Assuming your location is still accurate (Maryland) they might want to familiarize themselves with:
    [...]
    LexisNexis(TM)

Then, I know this works in New York, and think it's probably pretty standard nationwide. The phone company provides a method to capture call trace information. The phone company customer service dept should fill in local details, but generally it involves pressing *57 during or after (not sure which) the call. Then you need to file a complaint with the police, because the telco will only release the data to them. There is probably a charge for this service, but it should be worthwhile.

    Good luck, and be safe.
    that's great advice!

i don't think you should ignore it. while i wouldn't stress about it but i also wouldn't let this f*ckwad continue to do this to you.

No one at all knew your new number? I would say it's someone you know or someone that at least knows your real name. One thing I think may work is get a male to answer the phone as much as possible if it starts up again. I would also call a lawyer and see what he can do about getting a court order to get the creeps number.

Your post freaks me out because I was in a really similar situation last year. Someone would call my phone at all hours of the night, between like, 8 P.M and 8 A.M. If I picked up, they would just breathe all heavy and moan, and sometimes groan my name... ahhhh! If I didn't pick up, they'd leave a recording of them breathing, OR they would leave a recording of a porn tape!!! Its was terrifying. It lasted for more than 6 months. The only way I got it to stop was by never picking up blocked numbers or numbers I didn't know, and disabling my voicemail. I kept getting blocked calls for several months, but the person eventually gave up because (I'm assuming) they never got any reward from calling me... just endless ringing.

I know that this isn't a convenient solution. I think it worked for me because whoever it was was only interested in the phone stuff, and wasn't actually trying to find me in person.

I'd contact the police again. If the officer you talk to doesn't seem to take it seriously then ask to speak to their superior. Keep pushing until someone takes this seriously because it is serious.

Its the same thing with your phone company, contact them and keep contacting them until they do their jobs.
