Default I need help with a physics problem

eta: nevermind, I totally see where I've gone wrong...i need to rotate my force diagram and split it into 2 components...i think

Hopping on the math help bandwagon here...can anyone help with a general physics problem? My question pertains to the second pic where rope A come off of the y axis and rope B comes off of the x axis:

To calculate the tension in rope A, should I use sin(60) or cos(210) ?

Iow, to calculate the sum of the forces on the x axis, should I:

    -T1sin60 + T2cos45 = 0

    OR

    -T1cos210 + T2cos45 = 0

I've done it both ways and if I use cos210 then the tension for rope B comes out to be exactly the same for pictures(a) and (b). That doesn't make sense, or does it?

This is a bizarre physics question. sin 60 = - cos 210. I'm guessing the wrong answer is there 0 Tension or otherwise the lamp would slide down. You're answer seems as good as any other. My answer: same tension as from problem (a). that is the second equation.

Only the second equation makes some sense. You can't have a negative tension component in one direction.

Main thing is to split the problems into equilibrium equations for both the X-axis and the Y-axis.

Recognize the weight is shared by both segments, and at equilibrium, the X-axis net tension component is zero and the Y-axis tension component equals the downward weight. That should give you enough equations to solve the thing.
