It's called a hypnic or myoclonic jerk. It's extremely common, totally harmless and just the way your muscles are reacting to the electrical impulses of your brain shutting down for sleep.

OP and TOO--Thanks for posting that!! I've always wondered what the heck was going on with me when I was trying to go to sleep!

I've ALWAYS gotten that! I can remember being five or six years old, and whenever I'd drift off to sleep, I'd have a dream about falling off a swing or a cliff and I'd jolt awake with a huge, full-body jerk. Many years later it used to drive my ex-husband nuts because I'd wake him up too with my full-body spasms right as we were both going to sleep. I still do it. I'll doze off, have some kind of falling dream, and then just before I hit, my whole body jerks me awake. Then I'll snuggle back down and really go to sleep.

Yeh hypnic jerk thats it. I find that they become more pronounced when I am over-tired. My boyfriend has to move over the other side of the bed to avoid injury

Some people think that in your sleep, your soul leaves your body and travels. If your body happens to wake up before your soul gets back, that jerk you feel is your soul being yanked back into your body or something.... Read all about it somewhere a long time ago...

That always happens to me too. It really irritates me cause I usually have a hard time getting to sleep & it's like ah, I was so close. Then it takes me a while to get back there.

One other tip about dream analysis: Consider every character in the dream a manifestation of yourself. In other words, you are both "yourself" in the dream AND the person chasing you with a kitchen knife. It's an interesting way to view the significance of the dream symbols.

I had a couple of exes that did this right before falling asleep.

Now, I get something completely different and it's scary. It only happens when I'm trying to force a nap, which I rarely do anymore because of it.
My entire head will buzz (I'm talking like a hive a bees) and I will hear loud bangs or gun shots. At this stage I'm already half asleep. I'm aware of it happening but unable to wake myself up without some serious trying.
I thought I was nuts, but I googled this some time ago and several other people mentioned it happened to them. Some even though it was the first stage of astral projecting. Interesting but scary as hell!
