I hate it when people assume that I am immoral or a sinner just because I am atheist. Fuck no. My morals are not based on archaic texts that have been edited and rewritten over the millennia, they are determined by logic and outcome. the Catholic Church has grubbed, killed, raped, and damned in the name of God. they have as much logic as 2-year olds.

I hope this thread doesn't veer into a move to Member Boards, but yeah, organized religion is bad idea whose time is DONE. I was raised Catholic & while I don't hate the Church I am sad to see some of the Real Dirt (like sweeping child abuse under the rug) coming out now & how the church is handling it...It has been pointed out to me before that the Roman Catholic church is not too dissimilar from the Italian Mafia.

I was lucky. My father and his two brothers quit the Catholic church long before I was born.

The activities of Cardinal Roger Mahony to protect some priests involved with child abuse is why several of the L.A. radio talk shows now refer to him as "Don Corleone Mahony," although I've not heard that term used for six months now.

It was created in fear of not knowing what came after death . If you go to to church and pray to God thats great if it works for you but really it doesnt do much for me .

I can't help getting a little pissed off when people let the Catholic church or Christian fundamentalists define all religion. There are many, many different walks of faith. Personally I think it's a bigger leap of faith to assume that this entire world just burst into being on its own, but whatever, atheism is fine if that's what works for you. Just please, please STOP writing off every other belief system on the basis of the Catholic church. It's not religion, it's Catholicism - nothing more.

Well almost all major organized religions are archaic and used for corruption anyway, regardless of what the original intention was. Islam, Catholicism, Christianity... and the archaic practices just get to me, like in orthodox judaism. WHY shouldn't people mix milk and meat? What's anti-spiritual about that?

Reform churches that take it all the way back to basics are the way to go. Take islam, Judaism, and Christianity all back to what they really mean: peace and love for yourself and fellow humankind.

Two things I wanna point out.
    A) ALL the Christian religions are offshoots of Catholicism- they all have the same history. They're not any better than Catholicism. The only reason Catholicism has all this stuff in its background is because it's been around for centuries and the offshoots haven't.

    B) These problems show up in ANY organized religion. Any group of people, really. (Mob mentality, anyone?) People are stupid and take things too far and don't know when to say, "Enough."

My favorite summation of the Roman Catholic Church is "Judaism for Pagans." But when the church doctrine diverges from common sense & science (uh, often) that's where I'm hoping the Church will fall into the past.

I posted on this thread after reading a funny comment string on Creationism Versus Science on fark.com......I'm more horrified of American Evangelicals than lazy corrupt Catholics....They're the flip side of Muslim extremism.
