    Default Question about IP addresses

when you do an ip check to see the address etc, what all can they come back with

Say someone is checking to see who posted something on a msg board..

I did my own IP scan or whatever you call it, it comes back the city, state my IP address of course but that's about it.

can they pull more info like a first and last name?

I think it depends on what kind of IP address you use. For most comcast customers, it's an address that is assigned specifically to your router. For AOL, they have continually changing IP's, so you cannot tell where the person is from.

And, yes...you can use IP's to track people down. However, I am not sure of the exact process of that.

there are actually two levels of IP checks ... the easy backtrack that basically deadends at the ISP which is available to anyone, and a deeper backtrack which crosses to the other side of the ISP which needs 'authorization'.

I use comcast, I managed to enter my IP address and come up with the city Im out of and the server I use, along with some numbers I don't understand.

Also I it showed my browser and the type of computer I'm using. but no name or anything like that.

That's the "basic" tracking. As Melonie stated, there is a more in-depth search, but I'm not sure exactly how that would work.

    AOL routes through a cluster.

Clients have an unique I.P.s when connected that change (weekly i believe) regularly. These I.P.s send all their traffic to the routing cluster so that on the outside world you can only see which router in the cluster happened to send that piece of information. It is traceable though.

Can people pull your first and last name? Eh, depends on how well the ISP does it's recording. Almost NEVER is it that good.

At best, (I am obligated to say) with proper legal authorization, the only surefire thing you're going to get is what MAC address sent (unable to be spoofed effectively at this level) out the data at the lowest I.P. on the pipe. This typically places it to that thing your ISP calls a "MODEM"

Now, if your service requires an auth method, like user name and password, then you can get that at the level of the MAC address sometimes, but typically tracing is a LOT easier cause your system is sending out AUTH packets. Taking this information to the ISP MAY turn you up some things. There's a few places that have a my.(name).com that if you packet sniff their lines (again not as easy as it sounds) you can get the AUTH info, and that info is all you need to login to the website and get home info. But ISPs seem to be leaving cleartext passwords. A wise decision.

Seriously, in most cases, you ARE safer than you think. Someone with a computer would have to have a serious boner out for you to pull this shit. But then again, it's equally hard to trace a phone line to an SN. Not an owner addy.

Well, you can get close, but you can't get a name and address unless it is a static ip address or block of class "C' addresses assigned to a specific individual, or a static IP address assigned to a specific domain name and you do a "whois" and they don't have a private registration.

If you want to browse anonymously, you can use something like

But, the reality is unless you are doing something illegal, why bother?

I know ONE person that could hack with an IP address if they wanted to. He does call himself a "hacker" but he doesn't break things down (IE: Break into people's personal computer shit), he tries to find weak spots and help companies by telling them about it.

Like myspace - he got no credit for finding a huge loop in their system.

^ Y'know, it's still illegal if you're doing it for a good cause without getting paid for it by the company itself.

I just learned a whole bunch. I'm not doing anything illegal in the least. It was a general question based on something that was said to me today. I wondered if the 'threat' was real.

    So i'll thrill you guys

We have a ton of shit talking going on , on a certain website. My club is unique in that girls dont confront one another, no ..instead they all take to a certain infamous bashing site and lash out.

A call was made to me today where someone said the club is getting the IP records from a forum ( that doesn't require an email or a username btw ) anon is how people are posting. How the managemnt is going to find out and fire all girls involved.

Nothing illegal is being posted on there, just some hateful bashing.

So me being me was wondering what all could they possibly find out? I mean it just seems too vast and surreal that they'd concern themselves with it.

I did my own ip search to see how viable it would be for them to spend money on this, and it came up little to nothing. I even placed a call to someone and was told how fruitless it would be.

    Which is why I asked.

Not very many websites will give up the IP info on their members. Even courts have a hell of a time getting that info. I hardly believe that the club would be able to just jump on and go.

the girl that called me sounded worried, her info came from another girl who's friends with a bouncer. So it's 2 over before it got to her. When she told me I thought it was odd that the club would go about it ( ip tracing before a meeting. ) to just fire girls. And personally judging from the posts on that board, they'd have to fired like 30% OF US.

the posts seem to target a few select girls and not just randoms or anything. Its so catty and some of it is was over the line.

However, I don't know too many customers that actually read that site. I mean, most people that do go to it are the girls! So little harm is done. and at least this way people vent and not at work. where shit could get ugly.

my opinion is that even if they have an IP, they will be hard pressed to obtain who that IP belongs to, without going through law enforcement to obtain rights to get the ISP to give that info up. unlikely unless you are committing a crime.

more than likely by saying 'we got your IP haha now confess' they are hoping you will do just that. and i would be willing to bet some will fall for it.
