Default Barking dog, should I do something about it?

We have a new family next door with a good size dog which they keep in the backyard. The dog barks all the damn time. It barks at night and also during the day and even wakes me up at sunrise everyday.

Last week it barked for nearly three days straight. I finally figured out that they had gone away somewhere and just left the poor thing in the yard the whole time. What was even worse is that it snowed one of those nights and has been in the 30's everynight as well. I can see most of their yard from my upstairs windows and while there is a covered porch I see no dog house anywhere. The poor dog must have been freezing!

I don't want to be a bitch but I don't think this animal is being treated properly. I don't feel I can speak to the neighbors in person without causing bad blood between us. Should I call someone about this issue? They would know it was me or my husband who called too because no one else lives on this end of our street yet since it is a brand new and still in progress development.

They only moved in 3 weeks ago. Maybe the dog just isn't used to it's enviroment yet and that is why it barks so much? But then again what about them leaving the dog alone and outside for three days in such cold weather?

I am a pet owner myself but even if I was not I think I would feel bad for this dog. I am afraid that if I call someone about this animal it will end up being put down and that sure isn't what I would want to see happen. What should I do?

Dog tacos anyone? JK! Maybe you could try leaving a note in their mailbox or doorstep asking them to quiet the dog down signing as "you're friendly neighbor". They may not realize it bothers others around them.

If they fail to shush the dog my personal choice would be to call animal control. Its hard to tell if a dog will be adopted or put down though.

I'd call the cops. No shelter in winter weather = no! Animal cruelty is animal cruelty... making your neighbors unhappy shouldnt be in the equation.

I would call the cops, too. They can't leave their dog outside when it's freezing with no shelter. Poor puppy.

Yep...cops or ASPCA. Outdoors with no shelter is not only cruel it's illegal. So is excessive noise.

I never understand why people get a pet just to throw it outside....

I had the same problem with the neighbors over here. I called animal control and guess what they did? NOT A DAMN THING.

They leave this poor dog (well, actually two dogs) out in all kinds of wacky weather...cold, heat, rain...and leave the dog house just far enough away that he can see it but is unable to get in it. They give him only the minimum for food and water to keep him from getting taken away...it makes me SICK.

To top it off...when I called animal control the lady talked to me like I was senile or something. "Are you SURE there isn't any water there? Are you SURE he can't get into the dog house?"

No, lady...I only walked over to the fence and looked. I hate to say it, but I keep waiting for the day that poor little thing will be dead in the backyard so I can start a hardcore campaign on our local animal shelter and the slack off job they're doing.

Back to you, though...I'd call. Maybe they'll actually listen to you (unlike here).

Ok then that settles it, I am calling to report it.

I pray nothing bad happens to the dog though because it's not it's fault. I just hope that my reporting the situation will give the dog and my ears some relief.

If the people next door have a problem with me afterward I'll just have to accept it because what is going on with that poor animal is just plain wrong.

Thanks to all of you for the advice.

    I'd call the cops.
We had a barking dog left out on a balcony in the apartment above us. This poor thing was left on this tiny balcony ALL the time. We reported it to the apartment manager, who told us "oh, yeah, she's a vet, sometimes she brings home animals with her from the office"

This was a vet who left this poor dog outside all the time? Then, we found her her name, turns out, she worked for the same vet we took our cats to. We switched vets. I dont want a clinic taking care of my animals if that is how they treat their own pets, Ya know?

Anyway...she got the dog taken off her, after the ASPCA made several visits ad saw the dog outside every time they came.

Try going to your local courthouse and find out what the rules are as far as noise during certain hours and animal treatment and what is considered cruelty. Give the neighbors a copy of these rules with the parts pertaining to them highlighted. If nothing changes, document the abuse/noise and take them to court. My ex bf did this to our old neighbors--who were doing exactly what you described your neighbors are doing-- and won.
