    Default Not Seeing A Change...?

I used to do very little to no exercise, and had some pretty shitty eating habits.

These days I still struggle with food a bit, but I'm a million times better than I was before. I know we're only in February but I haven't eaten any food from McD's/KFC/Burger King all year, and that's a big thing for a former junk food addict like me. About 2 months ago I got a gym membership, and ever since I've been doing weights and cardio training with a personal trainer twice a week, as well as hitting the cardio room 2-4 times a week for 30-90 mins, and also doing the occasional bodyjam class. I'm taking multi-vitamins, keeping active, and feeling good.

But physically, I don't see any results. I've lost maybe... 2kg in 2 months? That's nothing. I feel like I've made such a huge change in my lifestyle and I've been working so hard, but I've still got a horrible flabby stomach and love-handles and flabby thighs.

Surely I should've seen a noticeable difference by now? It's been 8 weeks of training really hard and eating reasonably well... and it's been a HUGE change from my former habits of eating junk food constantly and not working out at all. Is it normal to not see any change yet? I know not to expect to see positive changes immediately... but 2 months should surely make some kind of a difference... right?

It's getting really depressing and disheartening.

    You and me both, girlie.

I have NO advice because I'm in the same boat as you. I'm no help, but at least you aren't alone.

Are you at a healthy weight for your height? If you are, your body will resist further weight loss, and any weight you do lose will come off extremely slowly. The body dislikes losing necessary fat reserves (though if you have too much fat, it comes off very quickly when you change your lifestyle).

Also remember that the older you get, the slower your metabolic rate becomes.

I don't have any real advice except what I do when I'm in this situation is think what I'd look like if I hadn't done all the work.

How many calories are you eating every day?

I dunno, I don't really keep count. Usually for breakfast I have a chocolate meal-replacement ultraslim shake. For lunch I usually have either vegetable soup or a salad or a rye sandwich with lean meat and salad. For dinner I eat steamed veggies with either grilled chicken or steak, or a vegetable stir-fry with lean meat or a salad.

For the most part I eat pretty healthily, apart from the occasional snack of potato chips (my major weakness) or chocolate. But obviously I don't snack on that all the time. Usually for snacks I have low fat rice crackers with low fat dip, or fruit, or a raw carrot, or something.

The one thing I saw missing from your diet was fruit. Are you having a good serviing size for these foods? I just make everything the size of my fist and thats a serving. There is also not alot of whole grains in your diet. Fiber from whole grains will keep you full longer along with your amount of protein your having. You might want to keep a food journal and check with a calorie counting site to make sure youre getting correct serving size.

Also use a measuring tape to track progress.....scales are the devil.

I'm Australian, so you can use kilograms if you want. In any case, 125lb/57kg is pretty underweight for 5'9. Your weight as it is sounds like it's low-normal (and that's what you look like to me in your photos). It's unsurprising that your body is resisting getting to a lower weight and, really, you don't need to lose a thing. I also fail to see any flabbiness in your pictures. It's easier said than done, but maybe you should accept your body- it is a pretty damned good one after all. If you want to eat well and exercise, do it for your health rather than to achieve an unrealistic weight.

At the end of my post I said I usually snack on fruit. I generally eat one piece of fruit a day, usually an apple or a banana. I like fruit a lot.

As for grains, when I have a sandwich it's always dark rye bread with heaps of grains... but I suppose that's not enough.

Bah, it's so hard to know what to eat. My body has always been stubborn with weight.

I don't post pictures where my flab is visible, or I photoshop it out. Everyone always says to me "Oh but you don't look flabby in your photos", well I swear to God if you saw me in real life you would see that I am not slim. This is not coming from a physco "I think I'm fat" thing, it's the honest truth.

If I wasn't too self-concious I'd post a photo where you can actually see what I really look like.

Alright, here's a photo. I'm not fat, but my stomach and hips are really flabby. I've put red circles around the parts I want to fix. I have seriously tried everything but I cannot seem to acheive a flat stomach

Your weight is still around the low-normal level, so you technically are slim (even if you're not in the shape you'd like to be in). If you are flabby, what you need is toning rather than to lose 5kg. Perhaps adding weights to your routine will give you the sleek shape you're after. Also, remember that changing your shape is a slow process. You won't firm up overnight. What's important is to be patient, consistent and persistent. Maybe asking your trainer for suggestions would help.

You have a little softness around the stomach area, but I wouldn't call it flab. What it looks like to me is a normal female shape. Even thin women have little tummies. If you're determined to tone it up, it's certainly possible to do so to some extent, at least. You're doing all the right things as far as eating goes, but perhaps you could try varying your exercise routine by adding weights and sit-ups. Remember, though, that the shape of your body comes down to genetics and it's not possible to make yourself into a runner bean if you're a pear. You can become a more toned pear, but that's about it.

I do lots of weights and sit-ups.

Even when I was younger and part of the school swim team, and was training in the pool 3 nights a week and competing one night a week, I still had a soft tummy. I hate it so much. All I really want is a flat stomach. I don't want a 6 pack, I just don't want my tummy to look soft & squishy

To be honest, though, you look pretty damned good as is to me. Your stomach is honestly not that bad. The fact that it's not completely flat is barely noticeable, that's how close it is to being flat. There's only a teeny-tiny bit of softness there and it actually looks quite womanly. Your hips are also fine.

Also, everyone hates some part of their body. For me it's my wide hips and thighs, but there ain't squat I can do about them, especially the hips, because my actual pelvic bones are wide. I also hate my too-large breasts. I'm a classic hourglass and I'd kill to be boyish. Doesn't matter how thin I get, I stay curvier than a racetrack. Genetics are a bitch.

Heh I know what you mean. It doesn't matter how much weight I lose, I've still got huge fuckin hips.

I'd do just about anything to have a slender boyish figure and small hips.

Darcy have you tried pilates? You don't look like you need to lose weight, but I know what you're talking about cuz your tummy and hips look alot like mine Pilates is by far the best thing I've found to get my tummy flat, hardly anything else gets me in the shape I want to be in. I use winsorpilates.com.

Looking at your diet, you say you eat a shake (probably around 200 calories), then soup or a salad or sandwich (maybe 300 calories), then steamed veggies and lean meat or stir fry (another 300 calories).

Even guessing generously, you're eating MAYBE 1000 calories a day at best, and at your height, weight and exercise level, you really need to be eating about 2000. That's why you're not seeing results--your body is clinging to all the calories it can salvage. At 5'9 and 136 lbs, your BMR is 1470 calories, and with your activity level, you're adding another 1000. That's 2500 calories a day.

So eat exactly what you're eating, in the same amounts, but double the number of meals. You should see some results then! You need to fuel your body adequately when you exercise. Try adding another 200 calories for 3 days, then another 200 for 3 days, then another 200 for 3 days, until you're at 2000 calories. That will allow your metabolism to adjust.

aww you look even more gorgeous to me in that position where you have a wee soft tummy. My boyfriend always says to me how much he loves my little tummy (and mine is MUCH bigger than yours) and now i can see whats appealing. Your stomach to me=flat. But you have that soft womanly look in that pic thats so damn appealing.

Darcy. Genetics. You can't fight something that you aren't meant to have....... I know I'm not meant to have a flat stomach and stopped fighting it. Even with Pilates (Winsor)... it just helped define my body more and made me look good not a flat stomach.

Plus why would you NOT want to be womanly? I have a boy-ish figure (or so I think as I don't have any hips unless I exagerate my pose or something) and so wish I had some sort of hour-glass shape.

We always want what we don't or can't have. Be it curly or wavy natural hair when we have dead straight hair (or vice versa). Be it wanting to be a natural blonde when you are naturally a dark brunette. Be it wanting to have tan olive skin when you are pale and can't tan.

Why can't we all just try to accept ourselves for who we are and focus on your good points instead of trying to change ourselves to be something we obviously cannot be ????

Work out because you care about your health not because of weight and image issues.

Darcy, weight is sooo deceiving. I've gone from 140lbs to 125lbs (granted, that was this morning before breakfast, right after I peed ) but am still soo unhappy with my body. Still have huge fat pockets below/to the side of my butt on my thighs, stomach still actually flabby (unlike yours!). All I've seemed to lose was my boobs, now nonexistent, and my formerly round butt.

All I can say is, you look great, and we'll get there together!

Your body is trying to tell you something. It's saying "Goddamnit, I'm already thin, why do I have to be thinner when I'm tall?!"

I can't imagine how skinny you must look now anyways, my friend is 5'9, 150lbs and looks like a stick.

Whoa! Same as me! Except I can't seem to push lower than 130. (which is where I'm at now)

I'm trying to eat about 1200-1500 calories per day, and excercising a bit less than you. Maybe if you rev your metabolism with a bit more food it'll help. Also, when you weight train, are your sets to failure? Building muscle is a hugely easy way to burn fat!

I got all the way down to 121 last summer (unintentionally!) and I looked kinda ehhh. But I was strong as hell, because I spent my summer days jogging, walking places, biking everywhere, swimming, going to the gym, and helping my mom move HUGE HEAVY boxes allll summer. Plus at my dad's place there was no good food to eat so I ate oatmeal white rice and chicken like... every day.

First and foremost, keep up the good work! Look how much you've changed your habits! And, as Emily pointed out, what might have happened if you weren't eating healthy and exercising...

    BTW you look gorgeous.
