Yet another cat behavioral problem thread...
About a week ago, I let the litterbox get too dirty - ONE TIME - and the cat peed on the bath mat instead. I figured it was my fault for not cleaning the litterbox in time, washed the bath mat, and went on about my business. But unfortunately the cat decided he liked the bath mat better.
He still does #2 in the litterbox, and he pees in the litterbox if I'm home. But if I'm not at home, he pees on the bath mat. Yesterday I was gone all day and I came home to my entire apartment reeking of cat pee. I left all the windows open all night even though it was cold, to air out the smell, and I'm washing the bath mat again... but I finally had to close the windows and heat the place and it still smells like cat pee.
I keep washing the bath mat, he keeps peeing on it. This is unacceptable. He only does it when I'm not home. I can't just go without a bath mat or I'll wind up slipping on puddles of water all over the floor every time I shower. His litterbox is less than three feet from the bath mat, so I can't just move the litterbox. I am keeping the litterbox clean but it doesn't work. He pees on the bath mat, I wash it, he pees again, I wash it, and meanwhile my apartment stinks like cat urine.
He's elderly so it's not like he needs training. What do I do?
