    Default From stripping to bartending?

My knee gave out on me today..which is almost the straw the broke the camels back. I am sick of waking up with headaches, knee pain, back pain. The money is too inconsistant, and recently the thought of going to work makes me anxious as hell.

I got a call from a friend who said she got offered a job to bartend five days a week, and I was so jealous?! So I took that as a sign maybe I should switch jobs. The money is probably the same as I am making now.

Who has switched from stripping to bartending? I imagine your feet hurt pretty bad but I'd rather have hurt feet then a knee like this. And did you switch because the money wasn't great in dancing anymore or you just wanted to?

I know you don't have myspace anymore, but CW posted that they need a day shift bartender at Gold Club.

I was offered a bartending job because the owner's daughter was getting too pregnant to work behind the bar. It was a slow bar so the only thing I hated was feeling trapped behind the bar, having to talk to guys to keep them buying booze.
OTOH, you're probably applying at busy clubs in an urban area, so they will mostly be concerned by how fast you can work & how attentive you can be to customers. Our very own Prester_John has some good advice, if he's willing to post in Stripping General.

heh, nat i went from bartending > stripping. i was doing that simultaneous thing for a while when we were at sig together but it was pointless for me since i made more dancing. start studying the drinks now (if you dont knwo them) and go walkin into all the bars in CC.

    Love it!

I went from bartending to stripping because I liked being able to take weekend nights off whenever I pleased and I make more money stripping.

I reccommend bartending though. The money can be great!! (I worked at a night club and it was close to the $ made stripping - but I only got 2 shifts per week). When I bartended, I wore comfy shoes, got hit on constantly, got great exercise, and never drank excessively. I regret quitting.

Here in Australia there is a great way to bartend whilst also still make good money -- it's called Skimpy Bartending. You do it in a bikini or lingere and eventually you go around with a tip jar every so often so people can put money in it and then you serve behind the bar topless for a little bit before doing it all again.

You get a per hour wage as well as tips!

The only reason I don't do it more often is because I get bored really quickly with behind the bar work. I prefer to be the waitress on the other side of the bar moving around and amongst the crowd. Being behind the bar made me feel imprisioned and pouring beers was really not challenge-ing. It didn't mentally stimulate me so I got bored.

I need to be mentally stimulated in whatever work I do.

I have gone from stripping to bartending and oh what a bitter bartender I was!!! You don't have the freedom to walk away from assholes, you are trapped behind the bar, and you have to keep serving and being nice to people who are shitty to you. And then, you leave with one fifth of the money you would have made stripping. I say fuck that noise, and try out a different club before you quit dancing alltogether.

Emily, I don't know if she plans to quit altogether or not, but she will be working there five days a week.

I always thought that guys were more respectful to bartenders..I am guessing maybe this is not true. :-/

Natalie, I hear you!!! Some of the reasons that you stated for wanting to possibly get out of dancing(inconsistent money, headaches, etc) are the same reasons that I decided to hang up my dancing shoes. Like you, I was applying to bartending positions too. I'm not bartending right now, because I'm focusing on a new full-time "regular" job that I got, plus the stupid bar that hired me was so flimsy with shifts. I might start applying to a few bars again because I will need more money, with taxes being due soon, and all of the good concerts going on this summer.

From what I've noticed, yeah I think the customers sometimes treat the bartenders or waitresses more respectfully. In some aspects, they disrespect them more because the bartenders have to accomodate them by making their drinks; but in other aspects, I think they get more respected. I think customers like to play mind games with dancers sometimes, such as pretending to be rich just to see if the dancer will grovel and kiss ass and practically beg him to go to VIP with her...or, they will mock the girl for choosing stripping...those asinine mind games were probably my ABSOLUTELY least favorite part about dancing(also, the mind gamers/assholes were the ones who wouldn't spend anything; as time went on and the money in the clubs went down, I noticed that more assholes tried to pull the mind games/bullshit.)

Anyways, good luck with bartending! Keep calling up places and show up during the slow daytime when the head manager is around, and you should find a place to work at soon. You're very attractive, so I definitely think that would be a plus! (My friend Bob went to bartending school, but when he applied to bars, one bar owner told him that his bartending "degree" meant nothing and that he was looking for tits, not bartending schooling!)

you don't really need experience to bartend, unless it is a busy bar serving lots of cocktails and you're on the night shift. there's usually someone to help or do the heavy lifting (barback). learning on the job is generally accepted and most customers are happy to tell you exactly what their preferred cocktail contains if you don't know.

it depends on the bar, but in general, customers aren't rude to bartenders at bars. and as for a direct money comparison to stripping, you're unlikely to have 2k nights, but if you pick the right bars, you could have pretty much nothing but 500or even 1k nights. and a surprising number of 'slow' bars furnish regs who tip 20-50 and visit a lot more often and in larger numbers than in a club. so the math can work out pretty well. and while you're spending that month or two building regs, you still can do ok even during pretty slow shifts.

just don't take work at college bars if you can avoid it.

ehhh i cant say i agree at ALL. your guess is more on target.. guys seem to think (in SCs) that they can talk down to bartenders, in fact, that's true at any bar. and then that just opens up to women doing it too. when i catered weddings bartending.. Oyyyyyy.. some of the rudest people would come to the bar and talk down down down to me, because you know, they bartended back in college for three nights! good luck nat. just remember crystal at sigs and how she'd be bitchy to custys who didn't respect her. behind the bar you DO have a bit more power-- you can choose not to serve someone.

    Love it!

all of our bartenders are x-dancers and they seem to liek it just fine. on slow days they'll dance just for something to do though. but it would be good for your legs to take a break for a while. good luck finding a job for it & be prepared for it to get really hecktic in night shift.

Yea, crystal had to change her attitude when she went to risque, lol that pissy sh!t wasn't cutting it! I think I'd be a nice bartender. I think I shall slowly move from dancing to bartending. Thanks for all the advice though!

You should check back with Chris. There may be more than one gig available. Also, he was DJ'ing on Monday afternoon. Since Gold Club's setup is hard-drive based, you might do well to take up that job, instead.

Tonight is accually my first night bartending at the club I dance at. The GM is pretty cool at this club and I told him I wanted to work my way out of the business. So he put me behind the bar for two days a week for now. I am so excited and definetly ready for the change.

Im hoping to use this as my foot out the door of stripping. I think its just my time to retire my stilettos. But I will still dance two days a week for a while to make the boss happy.

I batend and dance, I will take a bartending shift anyday over dancing..
I make more almost always behind the bar..
When you have the skills of being a dancer behind a bar, guys always want what they can't have..

Bartenders are intangible compared to dancers and guys want to see how far they can get with you...

I love bartending I am a great dancer, but for me, I am a better bartender who also keeps people entertained from behind the bar, so I get the best of both worlds back there...

This is what I was gonna write! I tried bartending for a stint, but I quit because of this. As a dancer, I could get away from these annoying drunk asses, but behind a bar, I had nowhere to go.
I had some serious knee problems and since we were new and still fairly slow, my manager let me sit down when I wasn't busy and had everything stocked. Maybe you can find a good manager like mine.
I made good money on the night shift, better or equal to dancing at my house club. But that's not saying much considering we rarely made over $200 in that shithole.
    Good Luck!!

I've thought about it a few times, but I have no experience making drinks, just ordering them

I like stripping most of the time, but it's boring (or not mentally stimulating, as GCG would say). I'ld love to bartend 1-2 nights a week, and dance 1-2 other nights......

I get so bored! 90% of my friends work nights (serving/'tending).... and I rarely make myself go to work more then 2x a week..... I think bartending would help me be more disciplned, and I could tell people I'm not dancing anymore.... I'm really sick of people thinking of me as a stripper first and a person 2nd....

As a long time bartender, and dancer, Give bartending a shot..

Half of bartending, even in a regular bar, on some nights is flirting, and or just keeping the atmosphere of the bar its self upbeat and fun....
I bartend where I dance, and another local bar. I have so much fun at my regular bar, and I really set the mood for it, I keep the music loud, and bounce around...
After dancing, you can really put those skills to work for you..
