    Default Gas stoves

    K. I'm a weirdo about this. I moved into my place a year ago. Turned on the stove once. Was going to make tenderloin. Fire alarm went off as oven was pre heating. So I turned it off and opened the window and went outside. Didn't notice anything smokey, just a light blue haze. Haven't used it since. I'm worried about carbon monixide. I know. get a detector. I recently cleaned the stove and found a very few crispy leftovers from the last tenant. Maybe that caused the problem.
Can anyone make me feel better. I would love to get back to cooking.
Plus years ago I had one "blow up" on me when I opened it to check and see if it was pre heating. So - really suspicious of these f*ckers.

See I'm more suspicious of electric ranges. I hate them with every ounce of my soul (I'm a amateur chef and electric just will not do.) I've had electric ranges set off more fire alarms and cause more problems than gas.

Your Gas Range just needs thoroughly cleaned. The "blow up" sounds like back flash. The Stove was on there was a small flame with heat, and lots of fuels, just not enough oxygen. When you opened the door the fuel and heat got the oxygen it needed to really burn. Poof! New eyebrows. Intakes and exhaust are likely dirty.

Sucky job. I would rather pay to have it thoroughly cleaned. So get it cleaned and inspected by a Pro and then you can feel better about it.

I know what you mean Mare I hate our gas stove!! But they cook sooo much better. You can smell natural gas cant you? I ask because some people can't. If it set your smoke detector off but you did not notice any smoke I would be worried somewhat. But they are set to go off with the smallest amount of smoke you may not have had much just enough to set it off. You really should get a carbon monixide detector, it's a law in Illinois now. Do you rent or are you buying the place? If you are renting call the land lord and tell him in needs to be checked. The fire dept might even come do it for you, or your electric company the might as well.

It took some getting used to when I first moved to Hollywood and everything was gas instead of electric, but I like it so much more! Carbon monoxide won't set off a smoke detector. You should definitely get a carbon monoxide detector, but I'm with Sarge; it probably just needs to be cleaned.

Thanks. This isn't the stove that blew on me, but I have never forgotten that. Maybe I will wait until I can open the window next to it and try it again.

Damn dude, is it regional? Immediately upon reading it, I was thinking of my childhood in a small apartment here on the east coast--where I am now back again--only place this happens routinely! Could also be a sensitive fire alarm. Just have the pillow handy! And those box matches, cuz the gas never really turns on the first time, even after blowing! I dunno, it's prob nothing to worry about, that dectector went off almost every time, actually now that I think of it, ESPECIALLY when the oven was on...
