Default Food question for the Aussies

    Hello to all the Australians,
My boy friend is going to become the executive chef of a new restaraunt and the owners want an Australlian themed menu. Short of copying Outback Steakhouse (something he really doesn't want to do) what type of items do you like that you consider are native to your country?
They are trying to stay away from blooming onions, but don't seem to know exactly what they want to serve. What do you guys order?
    thanks in advance.
Please don't lick me, it tickles..

^^^ Ha, no-one eats blooming onions over here that i know of! The only time I heard of them was when a myspace friend was being harrased by Americans for being an Aussie and someone mentioned blooming onions :-D

Hmm, well its sort of hard for me to say since I didnt grow up here and my eating habits are not what you might call"typical Aussie" (is there really such a thing anyway...) I guess we eat alot of steak and seafood especially prawns (note we do not call them shrimp!) We eat our national emblems - kangaroo and emu but not regularly, lol.
All else i can think of currently is damper, lamingtons and Anzac Buiscuits, oh and of course the famous meat pie, lol.

Okay, seriously. outback steakhouse is a joke!

Aussie, they have the ABoriginal burger! I mean, how insulting!

A real Aussie meal? Sausage sizzles, meat pie, damper, bangers and mash (heehee), thick-cut bacon always sided with grilled tomatoes, steak w/o sauce (I don't know why!)....

    Ummmm...

Pancakes. :o~ Aussie pancakes are good.

    ..and WHY would you make a menu of a place you've never even been to? o.o;

It's just a burger... no beetroot either (PS, Australians put beets in their burgers)....

they just called it the Ab-original burger...

    and the prime ministers prime rib! o.O;;

... I have copies of the menu I brought with me to Australia... and drink mats!! They say "Fosters, Australian for beer" on one side and "Some shrimp on the barbie!" on the other!

    Outback? What a fucking travesty.

Is your boyfriend going to be a real chef or a glorified line cook? Don't mean to be an asshole, but if the Outback menu is giving the owners of that place ANY ideas at all, it doesn't sound like much of a restaurant worth going to. But work is work and he seems interested in making the place work.

I'd definitely do some meat pies. I've had the traditional ones, Beef Stroganoff ones with mushrooms, curried meat pies and chicken pies. Also, maybe an "Australian Surf and Turf" with kangaroo steak and prawns. Aussies looooove beets. So soups, salads and sandwiches with beets (although American's don't seem too keen on them) would be a good Aussie staple. Sweet Thai chili sauce is a commonly used as a popular condiment.

If he's in charge of the beer list, fuck Foster's. Get your hands on some Toohey's instead.

    For desserts, a Pavlova.

Hehe that's really what I wanted to say. It seems the same as American cuisine: meat meat meat + meat, prawns. Starchy things. Why does that inspire some ppl as something that would catch on? Many things are much more exciting, no offense to Aussies at all, it's just not that exotic. Yes, and I also wanted to ask, what city/state are you in?

As an Aussie I don't feel that we really have any national dishes of our own. We started off with a very similar diet to the British and over time coz of the multi cultural nature of Australia we got a lot more of a european and eastern influence to our diets.

Aussies love barbeques so anything on the BBQ like sausages, steaks (yuk don't like em myself) chops, ribs.

We also have pineapple in our burgers, I dunno if that's the same elsewhere.

Our hamburgers have beef in them by the way not ham, go figure.

Outback Steakhouse is about as Australian as Taco Bell!

Australian food is not good, though I do like a baked potato piled high with chilled coleslaw. Oh, and Australian iced coffee - espresso with chocolate and ice cream in it!

Aboriginal Burger??! Ahahahahahaha. I'm not sure whether to laugh or be shocked! Maybe it's just because I'm tired and it's 4am but that's got me in fucking hysterics. Wtf.

Anyway, get some Tim-Tams (cookies)! Make Tim-Tam icecream! And vegemite on toast. lol

thanks for the replies and NO he doesn't want to do anything compared to Outback since it really is a joke..
And a true chef, no line cook <<-- yet another reason to stay away from Outback.
All your ideas have really helped and I will print them out for him.
This place is supposed to be quite fancy, but since it's just starting out it needs a bit of a kick to stand out in this town and ANY type of steak house in that area just won't cut it. There are either too many or just too many crappy ones.
    thanks again!

"Fancy" and "Australian" really don't go together... although I did have a lovely gourmet meal at a fine restaurant in Tasmania that incorporated regional cuisine. Trying to remember what the meal was... I remember a very good damper (beer bread) that was almost like a focaccia, with olive oil and ground bush spices to dip it in (macadamia and native chilis, IIRC). The main dish was an excellent Australian beef filet seared in more native spices and a dash of shiraz, served over smashed potatoes and some kind of veggie, can't remember what. Maybe asparagus. There was a dessert but I can't remember what, and I had a lovely Australian shiraz with it.

If he's doing Australian, the menu should be really heavy on lamb, beef, and prawns. A shepherd's pie should also be on the menu somewhere, as well as a kidney pie if people in your area will eat that. Ooh, and import the good Aussie beers if possible - XXXX, Toohey's, Cascade, etc.! And for the nonalcoholic drinks, Bundaberg ginger beer.

^ Agreed. You can't have Australian and fancy.

Also, how he can he make an entire menu knowing another menu is a 'joke' if he's never been to Australia or knows what Australians eat?

It seems like this restaurant is rather dim-witted.

    Import VB!

^^ that's kinda insulting... and quite wrong.

of course you can. there are many 'modern australian' restaurants using local ingredients to create absolutely top shelf dining experiences.

if you're going to talk about settler food - i'm guessing in any country it wasn't exactly refined and amazing... but everyone develops, and so have we. all depends on whether you want to part with $15 for a pub counter meal or upwards from $60 for something interesting

The fancier foods tend to use Australian spices or ideas but mixing them with overseas foods that were imported... actual settler general Australian food is pretty much not fancy foods. Remember: Australia is a young country - it's foods aren't as refined as others.

American food isn't very fancy either. Burgers and apple pie and steak.

But it's also a relatively young country as well.

^^^ Im agreeing with Nautilus on this one.

I was going to add that an Aussie slang term for food is tucker and that we also have some very good wines.

It should be remembered that I live in the bogan state of the country, so I admit I was wrong.

Our restaurants in Melbourne and Sydney are amongst the best in the world. Not Australian type food but international food - Im not sure if u just meant the traditional Aussie dishes.

Not meaning to be rude to anyone here but I was recently in London and the produce was terrible, not very fresh etc and I could not find a good pasta anywhere. I missed my great Melbourne restaurants.

Can anyone enlighten me on what a blooming onion is?
