Default specific money goals--help or hinderance?

Bridgette's reply in my goal-setting post got me thinking about this. Do you set specific dollar goals for yourself? If so, do you set goals for each shift, or do you give yourself a dollar amount that you want to make over the whole week?

Do you find that making concrete dollar-amount goals helps you earn more or not? Or do you think it actually hurts your money? If so, why?

Can't answer this for myself yet, as I've always been one to set specific dollar goals, and I don't know if changing that mindset will make me more or less, or how it will affect my money. But I think I'm going to find out--I'm going to try going in this weekend with no set dollar goals in mind and see how it plays out. Then maybe try setting just one overall goal for the whole week instead of setting rigid $$ goals for each night.

    Anyway, what do YOU do?

Honestly, I've found that when I make goals for myself it actually hurts my money. It's alot of pressure because I'll set high goals. Throughout the night I count it and I'll find I'm nowhere near my goal I get frustrated and I think it shows towards the customers. I just try to get as many dances as possible and try not to think about how much money I "have" to make.

I make goals and it keeps me motivated at the end of the night when I normally start to fade out.

And if I meet my goal, I add $200 to it and make a new goal. Obviously I will never reach my goal if I keep adding, but it keeps me motivated. I don't beat myself up for not meeting a goal either.....unless I don't meet a weekly goal, then I'll work an extra night.

I don't set a goal. If I don't make it, I end up incredibly pissed off. Esp somewhere like Vegas, where money is so unpredictable, I find it hurts me more than helps me.

I set a goal, but it's fluid..... so if there's no way I can make X$ one night, I lower it to something more attainable..... or if I'm at my goal, I up it to something more...

This way, I never meat my goals really, but i did, in a way....

I do make goals for myself, I also play silly games with myself like, " I can have a cocktail at the bar after I sell ten dances" or shit like that. I also will say that if I make over X amount of dollars, I can spend the amount I make over X on silly shit, clothes, whatever I want... NOT BILLS!

I don't make nightly goals, I only make weekly goals. Trying to do it nightly doesn't work for me. I record all the money I make each night, I break it down between 'stage' money and 'anything other than stage' money, and at the end of the week I add everything up.

i make nightly goals, in some ways it works, as i feel pressured to make more to reach it (i work best under financial pressure, which iswhy i always have to set a high monthly goal, ie $x needed by 1st may for such and such) and i always over estimate how much i need for that added pressure.

but, it also totally works against me.

the second i count my money during the night, and realise i have made it, or am a fe dollars off, i sit back and do nothing. then ill go home early.

    im a slacker.

i work hard at the begining of the night ,when its quiet, and slck off later in the night.

Well, to expand on what I was saying, since it's got its own thread now....

Someone said on here a long time ago (or maybe it was before SW on another site) that sticking to totally rigid dollar goals is bad for most girls because of this:

You have a goal of $300 per day, always. So you leave when you make $300.

It's a really slow day, but you just HAVE TO make $300. So you stay and work extra hours, busting your ass just to hit that goal and go home exhausted.
    then
It's a busy day and money is easy to make. You make your goal in 3 hours and leave early or just slack off.

This method actually causes you to work MORE for less money at the end of the week. You may make your desired amount every week, but you COULD be making more by changing your work habits. In this example, in two days you made $600, and one of those days you exhausted yourself (and likely didn't work the next day when you should've).

    Now, another scenario:

When it's busy and easy to make money - work the normal shift instead of leaving early. And DON'T SLACK OFF! So instead of $300 for that day, maybe you make $550.

Leave at the end of the shift (or don't bother going in early) on slow days! Why torture youself and wear yourself out for crap money? If you only made $175, so what? Just do your best for the regular shift and call it a day - but don't just give up altogether! On the busy day you'll MORE than make up for it! It's about working smarter not harder.

In this example, you made $725 in two days instead of just $600, AND you didn't have to bust your ass on an extra-long shitty shift.

I think a set $ goal causes alot of girls to make less than they actually could because it is too easy to feel like it's cool to give up once you made the goal, and too stressful when you're trying to make some arbitrary goal that's just impossible to make for that day or week.

I don't leave early or give up early. I don't ever bother to go in early or work extra-long shifts either. I don't set any specific $ goals, ever. As I said in the other post, my goal is always just MORE. Til the end of the shift, every time I work. If it's a really crappy day, I still keep working, make whatever I can and leave knowing I did my best. If the whole week is shit, I don't worry about it because the week before or after I didn't slack off, so I am still able to pay my bills.

Every night I work, if there are customers who will buy, I am out there dancing until they kick my ass out. I see way too many girls leaving or giving up early when there's still money to be made. I don't believe that so many young women are THAT tired - I think they're just lazy.

If you need some specific goal to keep motivated, how about stuff like always working 3 full shifts a week instead of just whenever? Or maybe if you already work a set number of shifts but always show up late, how about setting a goal to show up on time? It's hard to make money if you're not even at work! How about always making a point to KEEP WORKING while you're at work instead of slacking off?

Also, how about a goal to actually pay your bills early so you don't have to scramble at the end of the month (when it's always shitty)? If you have rent, car payment and insurance all due 1st of month, how about paying one of them on the 2nd week of the month, another on the 3rd week, and then you'll only have one bill to pay the last week of the month. YAY!

Savings goals: Instead of setting a specific $ goal, how about a %? Always save x% of what you make, and MAKE yourself get by on whatever is left. The key to this is to set a realistic %, allowing yourself some little splurges sometimes, and then train yourself to stick with it. A % saving allows you some extra spending money on a good month and can keep you motivated on a slower month.

Anyway. There are MANY ways to use goals to improve your situation. I'm not saying goals are bad - they are not. But I think alot of girls could utilize goal-setting in a much more productive way.

I set weekly goals and I find it helps me.
I never count my money until I leave the club so if I reach my goal it doesn't cause me to slack off. In fact I work like a dog the whole time I am at work, I rarely even have a break or have time to get a drink of water on the busier nights.

I view my goal as a minimum weekly goal that I would be happy with at the very least but I always want as much as I can get.

I work long shifts at my club 8-12 hours and there is no prospect of leaving until the manager signs me off tables so I figure I have to make the most of my time there even when I'm tired.

I set a *minimum* goal to make at least my average ammount. (I keep track of how much I make each night, so I always know what that average is.) Of course, if I make more than that, I raise the goal and just keep going, because I know I'll have at least one below-average night that week to make up for.

I stay motivated because I like seeing my average go up over time. I don't beat myself up if I don't make a particular goal. I just plan to do better next time.

I feel like goal-setting has been hugely helpful for me. I used to stuff all my money in my locker and have no idea what I'd made until the end of the night. Now I keep careful track of how much I've made and I find that helps to keep me motivated because I can set myself concrete immediate goals like "I need to do four more dances before midnight." For some reason I find it easier to meet goals like this than to just work, work, work with no idea where I am.

I'm kind of an all or nothing personality who gets really upset when I don't reach my goals. So when I do set goals, I try to make them realistic (as in a minimum weekly, and a dream goal). This way I can still make up for circumstances outside of my control, without beating myself up over it. I always make my minimum goals, and keep my dream goal as something to motivate me and keep improving.
My problem isn't making nightly or weekly goals, it's burning out before I meet my long-term ones.....

Yep. I've found that counting my money while in the middle of the shift hurts me ALOT! I think it does stress me out. I seem to do the best when I'm not paying attention to what I am making and just keep busting my ass and collecting the money to add to my garter. Then at the end of the night I count it and sometimes plesently surprised like YAY! Not paying attention to the money keeps me focused on making more.

I am starting this new thing of working Tuesday, Wendsday and Thursday and if I don't meet my finnacial goals for the week I'll pick up Friday. It is hard but I think it will help me from becoming lazy!

hmmm. I'm going to try that, not counting.

I seem to know at any time how much I have, I'd say I count 1x an hour. Thats 6 extrA dances, ya know!

I set daily goals, but try not to count it while I'm at work. I just keep trying to make my goal all night and sometimes I end up with more. Here's how I do the goals though. I think of something I've been wanting, but haven't splurged on cause I enjoy hoarding money and paying off everything. Let's say it's a new shirt. I just tell myself, "I can go buy this shirt as soon as I have a $400 night." I do the same thing for everything I don't need. I find that little incentives keep me more motivated sometimes. If I don't make my goal, no biggie. I can always try to earn my shirt the next day at work.

im at the stage where, if its a dead night and ive realised this, i lose all motivation and want to go home. so i say to myself "just make £60, thats just 2-3 dances, that way you will have made back your house fee, made the house fee for tomorrow night and hav £20 for yourself" and i end up doing about £100 on a dead night just cos i pushed myself to make the bare minimum.

i need to remember to set a goal. this will help me not fall apart wen i cash off after a girl who made a grand and i only made £100.

i should aim to make £100 and then another £100 and then another £100. £100 is 4 dances @ £30 each with one @ £20 or 5 at £20. the shit part is wen they pay me in vouchers cos then i only get £16...

but yeh, i must remember to set goals. see if it works for me.

it also doesnt help that i usually only have about 3hrs to make money because the club only gets busy after the pubs close at around midnight and we close at 3 and ive been sitting around since 8.
