oh shit.I don't smoke, but I can really see this hurting things.
It didn't hurt other cities like NYC too badly. I think it might actually bring in an influx of better customers who stay away from bars and strip clubs because they're too smoky.
I gotta say though, I will miss coming to visit from NYC and being able to light up if I feel like it.

nina, that's a good point. i didnt think of that![]()
^^ i must say, as your resident SW stalker, i've outdone myself this time.(hmm, maybe not, but i just posted a spinoff of this in Stripping General...I'm anxious to hear what's happened to SC's in other cities that have already enacted the ban. *worries*.)
The good thing is, LDs are illegal in DC, and I believe they also already have the smoking ban...so we might not have to worry about pissed-off smoking custies saying "fuck this, let's go to a DC club". I *think* Philly is also nonsmoking (although I could be wrong about that one)...and I don't know about Delaware, but if all the surrounding cities are also nonsmoking, then maybe business will be okay simply because they'll have to drive for HOURS just to smoke in a club.

It won't hurt business that bad. It might cause a slowdown for a little while, but really - there are many good-spending customers who don't hang out as long or stay away because of the smoke. Some of those guys can't go whenever they want because they can't come home smelling like an ashtray. I bet those guys will LOVE the smoking ban![]()
Also, there aren't too many good options around Baltimore for T&A. Smokers can just step outside for a few minutes if they need a smoke. This is what they do in other areas.
I heard that Christie's in Tempe tried making their club a "membership" club to get around their local smoking ban, but that didn't help their business so they just went with no smoking and they get good business.
I think people overestimate negative impacts of smoking bans on club business.
I know showcase in pg is already no smoking, and I was in there once and it looked like they were doing decent business. I'm pretty sure there won't be very many other lap dance options where smoking is allowed....I'm fairly sure anne arundel county where mcdoogals is is considering a smoking ban too. Baltimore county is no competition cause the clubs there aren't lap dance clubs. Also, in key west I think the bars are all no smoking and people still go. I don't know why everyone gets so upset, people aren't going to stop going to bars because they can't smoke. As a non smoker I think this is great!

Your work clothes are gonna smell so much better and you won't come home smelling like an ashtray. I smoke, and the smell of the club's smoke grosses me out still! I am envious. Oh well, I'll be there soon enough.

My experience with smoking bans is that they cause more upset to the dancers than the customers. As a non-smoker, I would favor a smokeless environment -- but I am well aware that 99+% of all dancers are smokers who are seriously driven crazy by such bans. (In fact, in my area I am convinced that my last two girlfriends were the only non-smoking dancers there.)

While I respect all the non-smokers here and do agree about the club and our clothes smelling better,I have to say this.Even though it hasn't been that long in DC (since jan 2nd),so far it has hurt the business and changed it.Very many of our regulars who smoke cigars either don't come in,or come in for one drink and leave. It seemes that the crowds got even younger in this period. Our smoking girls got used to not smoking within a few days/couple of weeks,so that wasn't really a big problem.
The management is trying to work something out with the ban,but nobody knows how things will turn out.Hopefully the slow down is temporary, but personally I'd rather have my clothes smell like smoke than lose the money. But that's just my opinion. We're all hopeing for the best.

I think it's different in a stage-dancing only environment. There's already not a whole lot to lure guys in and if they can't sit there and pretend to look like kings with their fat cigars while sitting around with hot chics, what else is there for them? But in a lapdancing environment, guys will still come for lapdances and deal with the lack of smoke![]()

i was thinking about the cigars too.. my club doesnt sell them, but some do. sucks for them![]()

The time it hurts business is when the guys have an option to go elsewhere where they can smoke. Like others have said, since DC is no LP and no smoking, the guys come to MD to do both -- but many counties in MD have passed the ban (Montgomery, Howard, several Eastern Shore, Baltimore City) and several others are considering it (Anne Arundel). Plus the MD General Assembly is considering a state wide smoking ban this legislative session, and it is looking better than previous years in terms of passing.
Pretty soon the guys will have no where else to go where they can smoke, and business will be fine again (they aren't all going to drive to Richmond or Philly after all).
I for one love the smoking ban as my asthma is getting so severe that I can't dance for more than an hour in a smoking bar without having to go outside to breathe again. And I was previously a smoker, but my lungs just can't put up with it anymore.

It's true that lapdancing is illegal in DC,and we have stage only work.Clubs in DC definitely work differently than anywhere else from what I've seen travelling the country. But our club is very popular and has been around for many many years and the majority of our clientelle has always been repeat regulars. We have people who've been coming in for 20-25 years or even more. While we do not offer lap dances,we offer entertainment through conversaton and actually this way many of the dancers and the customers become friends, often very close ones, for long periods of time, since our customers seem to enjoy our type of entertainment greatly. So a lot of people come in just for that, the fun chance to sit down and chat with a dancer, get to know her,and for this we get tipped, you can be surprised at the generosity of some people.TOO will back me up for this.A lot of people don't understand how it works and ask questions, but after they spend time at the club and end up having a great time, are usually bound to return.
So many people know before they come in that we don't offer lap dancing kind of entertaining, but a different kind of entertaining. So if they want a lap dance, they simply drive to MD or go elsewhere where they can get it.\
So my point was simply that we had people coming in for many years, some of them smokers and enjoyed cigars (majority of them great tippers),and now can't do it anymore and seem to shy away from the club at this time. While you can go outside and smoke a cigarette quickly, you cannot do that with a cigar. Many people in DC enjoy cigars and like to sit down with a nice scotch while smoking one.The truth about the smoking ban is that smokers will hate it and non-smokers will love it,so there will always be a difference of opinions.But...it seems that slowly people are getting used to it,though the business did slow down a bit.
It is nice to be in a better smelling club, especially enjoyable for the non-smokers and I sincerely hope that all people get used to it sooner so the business will pick back up again.

^Oh, I'm not saying that there won't always be guys who want the DC entertainment. Of course there will be. Just that, as you are seeing, there will be fewer who are interested enough to go there and spend time like they used to if they can't smoke. You will probably see a few of your customers return once the Baltimore ban takes effect, but still, I think Baltimore clubs will be less affected by a smoking ban than DC clubs.

Yup,I agree.
^^ RusDancer, where do you work? Just curious![]()

18th and Mst NW.

I'd go back to that D.C. spot just for the cheeseburger and the amazingly good bar and waitstaff service! Also, even though they "only" have eye candy there, it was probably the most consistently high level of pretty girls I have ever seen in any club I've been in.
From my personal and slightly selfish perspective - hoo-ray for the smoking ban!
I'll be going more often now. Up to now I tried to go only during slow times when there aren't many customers - meaning less smoke.
I've always preferred non-smoking dancers too.
I sincerely hope and don't think this will hurt your business in the long run.

In 10 years the ban will be the law in the majority of states. Since they started the smoking ban state-wide (NY), things are better for a slightly different set of customers who hated the smoke. That was the worst part of going to a club, along with the threat of drunk customers, drug transactions, and spycams in VIP rooms. Well, the spycams and dope dealers are still there, but the smoke is gone. Besides, if you lose any money (temporarily during the adjustment period), you'll regain your lungs' health.
I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.
Customers are not entitled to grope, disrespect, or rob strippers. This is their job, not their hobby, and they all need income. Clubs are not just some erotic show for guys to view while drinking.

me either B! Too bad I will only be able to enjoy it for 4 days b/c I am going back to seattle for the summer. I hate smoke!
