    Default Adderall and appetite

Ok, I've been taking Adderall on and off for more than 10 years for ADHD. It doesn't make me hyper or shaky or anything, it just slows me down and makes it easier for me to do things from start to finish. I just started taking a different brand of generic Adderall, and it has killed my appetite to the point that even smelling food makes me want to get sick. The only things I have been able to keep down are smoothies and watermelon. So I'm not hungry all day, until about 9PM, and then I get some of my appetite. I'm not eating during the day, and I know it's bad for me, but I really do get physically ill if I eat solid food.

Has anybody else dealt with this, and if so, how did you deal with it? I don't want to only eat late in the evening, but I don't want to puke my guts up either. My doc says sometimes it 'just happens' but I'm not really satisfied with that answer.

Hmm... that is kind of a lousy answer, "it just happens." Is there any way that you can go back to your old brand of Adderall, or non-generic?? The only thing I can reccommend to you is what I did when I had my wisdom teeth pulled, and couldn't eat for two weeks. I didn't want to loose weight, so I lived off Ensure Shakes and custard (like ice cream, but fattier, found in Wisconsin). It was gross. That's not much of a way to live, so I suggest seeing a different doctor and asking for recomendations, or call nurse online:

    1-262-544-2745

It's a hotline from my home town, it's awesome. They have registered nurses on the phone, 24 hours a day, that answer all your medical questions. For free.

no that's not an acceptable answer. it may be a common side effect of your drug, but if it's interrupting your life you need to discuss with your Dr. the possibility of changing meds or even taking a second med to help with the side effects.

I'm trying not to have to add in any more pills. I take a small mountain of them every day anyway, and I'd like to not have to take more.

I'm going to call the number VP posted above and see how that goes. Sometimes I get discouraged when the doc tells me that's just the way things are.

I've been taking adderall for ADHD for about a year, and unfortunately, this is one of the side effects for me too. I don't like solid food when I'm on it, and I get full really easily.I've found a few ways to temper it though. I usually wake up, and eat a big meal for breakfast that includes carbs, protein, and fruit.

I don't take my pill till after! This helps me get something in my system to get me going. Then, I'll have a small smoothie with protein powder after a few hours. Later, I'll have applesauce. After the Adderall wears off around 10 or so I eat another well balanced meal.

If you have to keep taking this particular pill, you might find ways like these to work around those icky feelings.

adderall is a chemical variant of speed, so of course it kills the appetite. some formulations more so than others. you'll have to schedule eating, and since it helps with focus, that can go pretty smoothly. i found it easier to eat salads or noodle soups because it was difficult to remember to eat something as solid as a hamburger or lasagna. i still lost a small amount of weight even with planned eating. you might want to look into non-chemical methods of dealing with adhd.

and on the purely anecdotal side, i have heard weed is good for adhd sufferers seeking something with fewer side effects than speed (ritalin/concerta, adderall, strattera, etc).

Ok, I just got off the phone with the nurse line, and they pretty much said that I should drink milkshakes and any other kind of liquids I can keep down during the day. If solid food doesn't work, just keep on drinking. They did say that the brand of generic might be making the problem worse, but I take other medications that kill the appetite as well, so it may be a compounded problem. I'm going to see what other kinds of generic Adderall they have around here tomorrow and see if that helps.

I take it too but i have been eating fine. What i am worried about it premature aging as it is a side effect. it is an amphetamine so it causes the breakdown of tisues and organs. Through more longterm the use the worse.

I have to choose between being able to concentrate, strive better in social situatiions to premature aging.

Not sure how vain that is but im already seeing wrinkles.

I'd be worried about the negative effects of amphetamines on long-term brain functioning. It would be best if you could take as low a dose as possible of the drug. The lower the dose, the better your appetite will be as well.

I've been taking it for years. On a very few occasions its caused me to feel nauseous and throw-up, but that was many years ago. Now, I'm fine on it, can eat a normal meal, and even go to sleep. I only tak 10mg a day max, and do take the generic.

Perhaps there is a negative reaction with one of your other meds. Recently, I had taken some Nyquil before bed, and woke up a few hours later, took my 10mg, went to work, and started shaking and having heart palpitations. This was due to mixing the two drugs.

Go to another doctor! How long has this been happening?

Nah, no extra aging. Adderall is very low on the list of drugs I take that I worry about, because I've been taking massive doses of all kinds of stuff for more than 10 years. I'm more worried about tardive dyskinesia, because I already have tiny symptoms of that, and odd body twitches are so not hot.

It may be from taking 3 other things that kill your appetite, but my appetite comes back on the weekends, because I don't take the Adderall on weekends. It only seems to get worse when they change the brand of generic that I am taking, and that plain sucks. Lame pharmacy........

I have a friend who takes it and she lost a lot of weight. I was sort of jealous because she wasn't even trying. She didn't really feel sick though I don't think. She just had a smaller appetite.

I'll post again. To me, it just seems worth it to take it.
The benefits: being able to function and get good grades in school, not hating myself for being unable to focus, functioning better socially because I can follow conversations, and being able to keep my house tidy.
The cons: not being able to eat solid food during a 6 hour or so span, sometimes having a hard time sleeping
Basically, for me, the benefits far outweigh the negatives, so I keep taking it. Drugs are different for everyone, and its important to carefully weigh these things for yourself as an individual.

Ginger, I would give it a couple of weeks for your body to adjust. Although the generic version is supposed to be the same there is going to be some slight variation in the chemical structure. Adderrall brand made me super tired, generic made me too speedy. You never know what your going to get. I take Focalin XR now which has done wonders for my ADD. I lost my appetite for about 2 weeks but then it came back.

^What type of drug is the Focalin?

I've been taking Adderall off and on for about 7 years . . . It does sort of kill my appetite, but since each dose only lasts 4 to 6 hours, I just eat when it wears off.

I always get the brand, because I've tried the generic and just...didn't like it. I can't remember exactly why, though. I've never experienced the kind of appetite loss that you describe, gingerlee. Why not just get the brand? I know it's WAY more expensive, but I think it's worth it.

When I first started taking Adderall, I got weird cravings: cigarettes, Sour patch kids, and root beer--none of which I'd been particularly fond of before I started taking it. I also stopped craving chocolate. Weird.

Did anyone else find that it changed their cravings like this?

^it's one of the newest brands of extended release stimulants. I think it's an isomer of methylphenidate so it's probably more like ritalin or concerta only supposedly "better."

Yep. Focalin is claimed to be the "Rolls Royce" of ADD meds. I've heard it referred to as clean Ritalin. It's also very expensive...with good insurance I pay $80 bucks a month, but my dosage is on the maximum. Worth doing a few extra lap dances, IMO though.

LL, have you ever taken concerta? I would love to hear a personal opinion of how the two measure up against one another.

My new shrink is a PA and can't prescribe me Adderrol. Is Focalin also a Class A controlled substance, or can I ask her for it possibly?

Strattera had absolutely no effect for me, but everyone is different.

Yes, I crave cigarettes when I take Adderrol, I can smoke way too many if I'm not careful, and feel like crap later from all the nicotine and smokey lung. I take generic, about 10mg a day.
