    Default Upper Body Strength

Oh geez, I'm such a noob to the gym. I'm not sure what I can do (aside from push ups) to make my upper body stronger. I took a pole dancing class last week and I couldn't raise my arms past my shoulders for five days. Obviously, being the overachiever that I am, I want to improve. How can I work on my overall upperbody and build up strength fast?

I know what you mean, my first pole class whipped my ass. Can't wait to hear responses, esp ones you can do at home.

Are you looking for upper body calisthenics or weight exercises? I work at a gym in the juice/protein shake bar so I've picked up a few things.

Best bet ... get a trainer for a couple of sessions. Most gyms have free introductory sessions that come with your membership.

It's easy to list off some exercises; but if you are that much of a novice, the chances are you great that will injure yourself without proper guidance on your exercise form.

That's a really good point, Lola.

But I still want to knwo what I can do by myself at home maybe just so that it's something I can do every day. The obvious answer is push ups, but is there anything beyond push ups? I dunno.

If you can get one of those anti-grav boot bars or just a really strong tension bar to put in a door jam you can use that for chin ups to at least build some bicept strength.

You can also use a chair or bench to do tricept dips from while you watch the telly.

Oh, and if you have the tension bar you can place it about half way down the door jam and pull yourself up in a kind of reverse sit up/crunch. Lay down under the bar, grab it with your heels on the floor and use your core to stabilize yourself then use your pecs and arms to pull yourself up to the bar.

Those are the only things I can think of to do at home.

    Sorry I'm not much help.

Going to the gym is far superior because the trainers can get you on a strength training programme and help you with form, weight loads, and they can also assist you as to what to do when you leave the gym.

Another plus to going to a gym...you are more motivated to do what you went in for...no distractions, and let's face it if you go into a gym and just stand around it does look rather silly

Who cares if you feel like a noob in the gym...everyone is there for the same thing... to improve their bodies....Take it from me....

When I first set foot in a gym I looked like Jabba the Hut in a bra...(I was 200+ pounds--YIKES!!) NOW THAT IS A NOOB!!!

Sophia_Starina, this website is great for someone working out at home. They illustrate and explain tons of exercises.

Damn, I thought that was just me. Yikes, three years ago.

To the OP, if you can get to a gym, I'd be happy to design a simple program for you. However, I would seriously recommend getting a trainer, if only for one session.

I would recommend getting a trainer if you're a complete newb. It will prevent you from injuries. I generally suggest 3-4 sessions, until you're comfortable with what you're doing w/o supervision.

Hey glad to reveal that you are not the only one out there...

I SO needed a trainer then...at least initially until I caught on to what was going on. Back in those days I never would have even contemplated dancing...even as a joke

Now after losing 80+ pounds and having a baby I think...."Hmmmm....Maybe I can do more than I thought I could and maybe I am more than people have told me I am?!?!"

"The only difference between your destiny and dispair is your determiniation!" ~quote by me (I used to make up quotes and plaster them throughout my apartment to keep me on track when everyone around me was beating me down.)

My first trainer made all the difference for me! So from my perspective get a trainer until you know what you are doing...strength training, endurance training, or sport specific training...always safer and ensures better results.
