Default How do you make hamburgers?

So, I've been craving hamburgers for a while, but I'm on some sort of frugal plan that won't allow me to buy a decent one at a restaurant, and I've just realized that I have no idea how to make them at home.
I'm a competent cook, but I don't really cook red meat-- I generally stick to chicken and fish. I have a grill and I guess I know how to use it, but I don't know times or anything, and I have no idea if beef has any safety concerns that I should look out for.
Do I just make a beef patty, or do I season it with something? I like it to have a nice meaty taste not overpowered by spices, but I really have no idea where to start.
    Thanks!

A little salt and pepper will suffice. You can get fancy if you want.

McCormick's makes a hamburger seasoning. It's everything you need in one bottle and all that I use. My parents add worchestier (sp), too.

that's funny, I'm about to make a burger casserole with my frozen burgers.
I took egg, meat, dived onions, pepper, parseley and Mrs. Dash herbs that I had and just rolled it all into patty shapes.
Then I browned each side in a pan, popped them into the oven and let them bake until slightly pink in the center and voila!
Please don't lick me, it tickles..

Just a tip. Use your thumb and make an indent that looks like a donut on one side. Place the donut side up on the grill. Follow normal grilling instructions. This will keep the burger from getting round.

    Some of these look tasty.......

I remember my mother using seasoning salt, chopped onion, garlic powder, and an egg to make it stick together better.

If your unsure any cooking shop has meat thermometers. I reference Cooking for Dummies alot since it explains those cute french terms. Emeril's Job is safe.

A whipped egg, garlic, lemon pepper, crushed red pepper, some sauteed onion pieces, maybe some diced chili peppers, and some seasoned bread crumbs to help keep it together. Make a patty of all that, and cook it up. Sautee some mushrooms in butter in another skillet. When the burger's on its last turn, melt pepper jack cheese on it. When it comes off, dump the sauteed mushrooms on it.

Hey, I don't have hamburgers very often, so it's a bit of an occasion when I do.

I've got a super bomb-azz recipe for zesty (but not over-spicy) burgers. Ground beef, Maggi (or soy sauce), worcestershire sauce, black pepper, cayenne pepper, serrano chiles, seasoned salt, milk, and egg... crazy deeeeeeeeelish, I tell ya!

Tip: Just a tablespoon of milk neutralizes the burning of the spices! Genius, eh? =D
