    Default Weight plateaux

I've been dieting, not overly strictly, for maybe six months or so and I've been losing weight fairly steadily, if not very rapidly. Most months I'll drop 2.5kg/6lbs or so and now I'm just 7kg/15lbs off my target weight. However, I have a problem in that my weight loss has skidded to a halt. It fluctuates by afew grams every few days or so, but it's an up and down thing rather than a downward trend. Basically I've been stuck at approximately the same weight for the last three weeks or so, whilst continuing to ensure my calories are kept at a level appropriate for weight loss.

My question to you all is: Have you ever hit a weight plateau whilst in the process of losing, and if so what did you do (that worked) to get your weight moving down towards your goal again?

    Thanks gals!

So wait, you have lost close to 40 lbs? That's fucking awesome...good for you!

At this point you may have to become more anal about how many calories you are consuming. As you lose weight, your body requires less calories because you just have less tissues doing metabolic processes in general. So you could either:

    a) Increase the intensity of your cardio.
    b) Increase the duration of your cardio.
    c) Decrease total calories.

Or a combination of the three. Are you taking supplements? If you are, then you should probably cycle off of the ones you are taking and try a new one. After so many months, your body adapts to supplements and you have to change it up so that you like give your body a new challenge to adapt to.

Hmm. I think I've been overly general here. I've lost more like 35lbs. I piled on a STACK of weight after I had a fairly major car accident at the end of 2005 and have been working on losing it since about August/September 2006, basically through moderate and healthy eating and occasional calorie counting.

I haven't been doing any cardio at all and am fairly reluctant to start since I've become quite unfit, but I've been thinking that I'll have to start with it at some point. All I've been doing is dieting, really.

The only supplement I take is extra light olive oil, as per the Shangri-La diet prescriptions. It works as a natural appetite suppressant if taken seperately from food.

35 lbs is awesome, you are doing great.

If you haven't done ANY cardio then just start walking 30-60 minutes a day. Just doing that 4 times a week is enough of a calorie deficit to jumpstart your weight loss again, and it is easy!

    Thankyou for the tip!

Are there any dietary tips you use for jumpstarting weight loss? (such as a reduction in carbs or something else, besides just cutting calories?)

Cutting out certain food groups, such as carbs, is usually the easiest because you limit the foods you CAN eat and then you don't really have to think about calories. It also helps regulate your blood sugar so you don't get hungry quite as fast. But cutting out all carbs is not realistic unless you are doing it for an event. (I am thinking about bodybuilders).

For a realistic but healthy diet, I would try just cutting out refined sugars and processed carbs (like bread, pasta, yogurt with sugar). Other carbs like oatmeal only in morning/early afternoon.

Check out the "Natural Fatburners " thread. Read the WHOLE thing. Plenty of advice on losing fat.
