    Default Winter headcold--2nd in as many months

    Grrr. I typically don't get colds, and this is my second in as many months. I cannot help but connect it to work stress--compounded by too much travel--plus trying to keep up with far younger and more nimble drinkers. Second-hand smoke does a number on me too, I think.

    I am also suspicious my diet may be lacking something vital. While I eat salads often, fruits & veggies per se aren't on my radar. Especially when it is cold out, there is nothing as yummy as pasta and rice dishes.

    Anyhow, food/cold remedy advice is welcome.

    At the risk of sounding repetetive: Hot buttered rum or hot toddy. I make mine with green tea, lemon, hot buttered rum mix or honey, shot of booze.

    I like to take a really hot bath, so hot that I sweat while I'm in it. I usually throw in some eucalyptus oil to help clear my head. I like to take some Nyquil while I'm in tub so it hits quickly. Stay in for 20-30 minutes, til you are positively sweating, then get out, put on some warm pajamas and get right in bed. Make sure you get a good nights sleep and you will feel so much better in the morning.

    OMG, they have a eucalyptus drip in the steam room at my gym...it is the best!!! I love it, and I feel like I breathe so much better when I come out, especially after a workout.


    I was just sick last week and I was never really into chicken soup, but this time I was eating Campbell's Healthy Request chicken noodle, a can a day, and I think it helped my sinuses clear out.

    No steam room at my gym. Just a sauna. Sigh. I feel a bit better today, but woke up 2x last night struggling to swallow with a very sore throat.

    I'm jealous! We have a steam room in my building, but no eucalyptus. You can recreate that effect - buy a bottle of eucalyptus essential oil, sprinkle a generous amount on a washcloth and use it in the shower. I like to also sprinkle some in the shower and let the water run as hot as it can go for about 5-10 minutes before I get in. Gets the room all nice, steamy, and eucalyptus scented.

    When I feel like crap, or a cold/flu coming on, every night I have a hot Neo-citrin, and slather on plenty of Vicks vapo rub lotion on my chest. I also have a special homeade batch of super hot sauce that I will eat a tsp of when I have a sore throat...whatever is in the hot sauce kills my sore throat within minutes.
