    Default help w/ my chihuahua

hey guys this is kinda random but i need your help finding info... i just recently moved into a house and my chihuahua has been hanging out outside for many hours throughout the day. Before that she was never outside cuz i lived in an apartment- i have noticed her skin is turning black! i dont know if this is cuz she is getting too much sun or has a disease or something?!

You better watch out, before long, she'll be running with thug shorties and living La Vida Loca...

Just kidding. It's probably just dirt & sun. You might want to lock her up sometimes, Chihuhuas got stolen all the time in my old neighborhood. They were easy to steal & fit inside a jacket, I guess

This should be posted in The Lounge or at least find a dog owners/lovers forum

Even my cat owners/lovers forum has a dog section you can post within

Or it might be her hair is changing color. It does happen.

you need to take a closer look at her skin. is it flaky? does she have an odor? does she itch alot now? it could be many many things from her skin tanning to flea dirt.

chihuahuas are pretty suseptable to sunburn. You might want to have the vet check her over just in case, then ask for a recommendation for a sunscreen you can use on her.
Is there anywhere outside where she can get out of the sun? You should have some sort of shelter out there for her so she can get into the shade if she wants.
Careful of the heat too...they are also prone to heatstroke. Which is not good in such a tiny dog.
People always ask me, did I ever learn anything when I was a stripper? Yeah, I did. One man plus two beers equals 20 dollars.

Yes, ^^^^^^^. I have a light haired chihuahua and she gets sunscreened before she gets to worship outside.

Chis are very heat sensitive. If yours has thinner / lighter hair you should use sunblock.

while chihuahuas are definitely very sun-susceptible as a breed, if her skin is turning black, that's a whole different issue (they burn to red, just like we do)...

is she under constant supervision while she's outside? there are a multitude of things that they can get into that don't wash off very easily...more common in cats, but sometimes animals like to hang out under cars or even right up inside where the engine is...and getting engine grease off of them is a nightmare...

is your house actually new, or newly renovated? all kinds of construction materials are sticky and gooey (roofing tar, the glue for keeping laminate flooring down, even wallpaper paste)...some of these are already black, and some would need her to then go outside and play in the dirt to turn her black, but it's certainly happened...

there are a couple of parasites that might also be at fault...

if you've given her a bath, and it's not helped, try wiping at the black areas with mineral or olive oil and see if anything comes off (oils will frequently break down sticky stuff that's not water soluble, and those two are relatively harmless if she ends up ingesting a little bit)...if the oil takes the black off, give her a good cleaning with it, then bath her to get the oil off (you may need to do this more than once)

failing that, she needs to see a vet (who will hopefully have a well educated veterinary technician on staff

    OMG what a cutie!

My Maltese used to lay out in the sun a lot and her pink skin had so many dark spots she looked like a spotted pig. I guess they sort of tan just like humans. Even her belly was sort of black. I later heard that they can get skin cancer just like us so please check with your vet. I no longer have a good fenced yard for her to lay in so she's back to being all pink skinned again.

But the dark splotches were like a dark gray color, not like a darker color pink like her usual skin.

Mine has very light, white hair along her neck, and around the time she was a year old she started getting black spots on her skin. Not the hair, but the skin. I've asked the vet and she's fine, just different pigments in the skin. Supposedly it's kinda normal for the skin to change a little when they get a little older. Hmmmm........ as soon as i find my camera, i'll post a pic of what i'm talking about.
