Default Funny story about the deaf, the hearing and the accented.

Yesterday I was at a pub and these guys were deaf. So I was 'telling' them, in sign language, that the tickets were for rum, bourbon or $25 cash...

When one of them asks me where I'm from.

    I 'say', "America, why?"

    And they all start laughing...

... "Because you sign in an American accent."

    Ha.

Crap, I can't even get away with being Aussie when I'm silent!!!

It's actually very true! American Sign Language is different to the Aussie Sign Language. There are TAFE courses around (as I was going to do one at one time yet I didn't as I would have no real use for it so there would be a skill that would go to waste) if you want to learn ASL (Australian Sign Language).

Thanks. Turns out Dee's driver knew them and he was really happy I knew a little even if it was American.. so he promised to teach me for minimal money. It'll be nice. I always wanted to learn more.

It's not really an accent, it's a totally different dialect. Fortunately world travel and the media are such that everyone recognizes American speech, whether spoken or silent!

    A lot of the words were the same... some spelling differed... but it seemed like more of an 'accent'.... overall we understood eachother... barely. o.O;

    *lol*

Yes, Canada and US have their own unique ways of signing while other places around the world have their own. ASL is unique to the point that you can fingerspell with one hand, whereas other regions you use both hands.

Just be careful who you use sign language around because a small difference in the hand movements can be taken as an insult.

Classic one is good morning in American, to an Italian it might be taken as an insult. The CN Tower in Toronto Canada , if the fist is facing the wrong way, you're flipping the bird.

Everyone knows 'fuck you'... pretty much, the bird.. or flipping under your chin or biting your thumb.. but those are old school. Ass involves making your hand look very much like, well, an ass... you can take lessons with me if you want.

I just want a covert way to insult patrons when they are being nasty and/or cheap to me so that I can't get into trouble.

Asshole is a good one... it's one handed and can be mistaken for gripping the pole wrong.

*mumbles, not finding picture* Think of the sign for 'okay'.. like 'a-okay!... thumb on forefinger with three fingers outwards... then turn it sideways, so the side of your hand (with the three fingers) is closest to the ground... then put the 3 fingers together (as in 'okay' they're apart).

So.. a sideways 'okay'... looks like an asshole.
