Oh! I completely understand. I had exactly the same problem as you've described and it's so frustrating and depressing. I had to quit dancing full time for this reason. It would start with a tickle in the lungs, move to a sore throat, then congestion/sinus infection. I would miss a week of work almost every month. I worked with a doctor who had me track when I would get sick and it turned out the pattern would start at the time I ovulated every month. It seems so strange that a respiratory problem could be connected with a hormonal imbalance, but for me there was some sort of hormone/thyroid/respiratory problem going on.

I found that going to bed at 4am and all the smoke just messed me up. I think as a stripper you're always in a high intensity/sexualized state and that probably knocks the hormones out of whack. I started taking Maca for the hormone imbalance. Luckily my club has a good day/mid shift so I was able to switch to that and get to bed earlier. I also use a neti pot for the sinus congestion, drink mullein tea for lungs, and get sick less often when I totally avoid sugar. Also, a really good multivitamin and Omega 3 fish oil religiously. Yoga and breathing excercises too. It sounds like a lot, but if I don't follow this and I dance, I will get sick.

It may be a different thing for you, but I just wanted you to know you're not alone in getting sick all the time from stripping. I know how awful it can be to continuously miss your goals due to health problems. It's hard too, to see dancers that can smoke, drink, and eat crap food every night and never get sick. I rarely get sick this way when I'm not dancing, unless I'm way overdoing it/stressed out, and having a ton of caffeine and sugar. Good luck in getting well!

I just dont know what to do anymore. Im on all this medication that wont let me sleep and i just dont feel like myself. my body is so tired but i havent slept in days. i really need the money right now, but i guess the best thing to do is take off until im completely better - it would be stupid to go back to work prematurely - right? i cant look at my house one more second.im missing out on so much money.... and im miserable cause i dont feel good and it hurts and its not getting much better and i dont know how much longer i will be sick for!!!!!!!! waaaahhhhhh.would u go to work anyway? how often do u work now? do u make the same money during the day as at night? ive thought of doing day shifts to avoid the smoke but not sure if its worth it financially.ur very lucky that ur club has a good day shift.

I'm so sorry to hear that you're still not feeling well! No, don't go back to work until you're better, I know how awful that is, I really do. Maybe the medication is making you worse. I can't do any sort of cold medication, it just makes things worse for me. You have to sleep and if the medication is keeping you from that, stop taking it. The body can heal on it's own if it's given the proper rest. If you've been home sick for so long your body is probably so out of whack as to whether it's night or day and doesn't even know when it should be sleeping any more. If you can, force yourself to do house cleaning, easy errands, things that will keep you busy during the day so at night your body knows it's time to sleep. You need to be as regular as you can about when you go to bed, not 10 one night, 2 the next. Don't watch TV or use the computer before bed, you need to tell your system you're winding down. Also, as you lay there breathe in for 4 breaths and out for 6, this will help you to relax. Your whole system is messed up right now and you need regularity to help you get back in balance.

On a positive note, because I would get sick so much I had to learn a lot about getting well. This forced me to live a healthy lifestyle, which has given me longetivity as a dancer. I'm 38 and make even more money than I did at 25, so don't think you'll have to quit all together because you're having this problem. After quitting full time dancing I went to 2-3 nights a week, plus a regular job that I enjoyed. I recently thought I'd retired because I hadn't danced in a year, but have now returned to working 2 days a week and will do so until I don't want to any more.

I've seen a lot of dancers that depend entirely on their youth through their 20's, then burn out and get sick alot. At that point a dancer either quits, or really gets healthy and becomes an even better dancer in her 30's.

You could try a humidifier with a few drops of eucalyptus oil for the congestion, or boil a pot of water, move it to a table, hold a towel over your head, and just sit there breathing in the steamy water. Overall, it sounds like you're immune system is just exhausted, working in a strip club is really not a normal or healthy thing for your body long term, so you have to make sure you take extra good care. Eat a lot of protein, don't eat sugar, drink a lot of hot tea (not caffeinated). Have you seen a doctor to be sure it's not something more major than you think?
