if you are married, in a committed relationship of some kind and/or have children it is a must and not creepy. What are you so creeped out about? Death is just as natural a part of 'life' as being born. It is natural.

As long as you're thinking about a will, think about life insurance too, especially if there's someone you care about (mother, father, any relative) who might suffer if you are not around to help provide for them...
You shouldn't fear death....But you should try to see how your life interconnects with others...What's important? Who and what have the biggest place in your heart?
I don't have life insurance since I have no dependents, but I have been thinking a lot about estate planning lately and a few friends have been saying it's a bit morbid. If anything happened to me my parents would get all my assets and they don't really need the money so I'd rather leave it to people I care about who would benefit from it.
The thought of death is creepy, but it should scare the shit out of you to leave your family behind with nothing, especially of you have kids. It makes me very sad when i hear about all the people out there who have dependents but don't bother getting life insurance because it either creeps them out or they think they're too young and won't die.
I'd also like to get a living will, even though basically everyone close to me knows that if I became a vegetable, I just want the plug pulled.

I think it's very normal to fear death, healthy even. if someonetells you that's not acceptable..... that's not very realistic.
But it's important to have a will if only for to insure your last wishes are carried out. like what ND said, about living wills. I've got a document saying that i do want to be kept of life support if I'm a "vegetable". And I want to make sure my money and trusts are given to my younger siblings....

We have living wills and "final" wills. We explain exactly who is to get the kids, how the money is spent for their care (from the life insurance) if anything were to happen to us.
You go see an attorney who specializes in writing wills. You can use one of those cheapie software things and write it yourself, but if you have dependants/life insurance, etc...it is so much better to have a professional write the will for you.
I don't "fear" death. I am planning for it so that lawyers don't get my money (or worse, my family.)
I have done it. Everything is going to my college....but I've got to update it. It's been a few years. That's for reminding me.

yea, i have a living will as well. i have things going to my brother and to my cousins. oh and of course to charities.
Love it!
A living will is just as important as a final will. If you want to keep it simple, get Quicken Willmaker for the preliminary drafting. I do recommend you ask an attorney to look over the papers. You will need a notary and 3 witnesses. Your bank probably won't do it for you.
And its not morbid at all. Imagine how much stress a living will would relieve on your family. Wealthy, successful people do estate planning. We all need to start thinking like them! Its not about death, its about sensibility and peace of mind.

I have very specific ideas of what I want. I made a living will just to be sure my wishes are carried out, because I know my mother would not follow them.
I want life support for only 3 months. If my condition is unchanged after 3 months, pull the plug. I do not want a funeral. I think they are morbid. I dont want people to mourn over my dead body. I want creamated. I dont care what happens to my ashes, as long as they are dumped somewhere. I could care less where. The ocean, the desert, the back yard, I dont care, but I want them dumped somewhere, not left in a urn. A memorial service can be held, outdoors, where people celebrate my life, not mourn the death. But not in a funeral home. It has to be outside somewhere.
I also have a simple will that just leaves anythign I have to my boyfriend, and that my family can't have anything. I watched my 5 aunts and uncles fight over my grandmothers estate, it was disgusting. They fought over the dumbest shit like who gets the washer and dryer. Then they pawned everything. All the antiques, all the china, everything was sold for money.

ugh thats horrible. ud think theyd wanna keep the stuff as rememberance of her. im sorry.... so heres a question - if u were to pass away....how in the world do hey even know if you have a will???? where does this will go after its written?

I have one. Its just seems to be common sense IMO (-:

ohhh so if u dont have that, then what???? they have to open it at some point...

My husband and I have one. We really don't want the courts/state determing what should happen to our son and our assets.
If you have a will, you have an executor of your estate. They would get the box. The bank cannot and will not open it without a court order. If the executor to your estate cannot or will not do this, then the remaining people who think they'll get something from your will would have to petition the court.
