Default I am so overwhelmed!!! and excited!

I have decided to go back to college. I don't even know where to begin. A customer of mine came in yesterday and offered to pay for me to go back to school. I don't even know if I can transfer my credits sinse I still owe my old college $3000. Okay let me start from the beginning. I attended a state college in Pennsylvania and failed out/dropped out with 115 credits. <- please no lectures on how stupid that was, trust me I already know. Unfortuniatly I still owe the school $3000 for the last semester of tuition so they won't reliese my transcript. I can only go to school part time because of my daughter and work so I feel like if I start over I won't graduate until I'm 80. Also back in PA I majored in technical theatre and would rather major in business when I go back.

Okay anyway I would love any advice that you can throw my way sinse I don't even know where to begin.

    Thanks
    Alexis

oooh! yay for you! i hope he follows thru and pays for it! now, first thing tell him that you have to pay the old school to release your transcripts, but at the same time, it might be a better idea to just reapply as if you've never gone, and then transfer in individual credits, like, things that will help, not things that won't.. i did this once, when i took three summer courses, and one i didn't do well in.. so i just didnt transfer it in. i wish the best for you!

    Love it!

Yay!! I went back to school this year. It's been almost 10 years! I don't have any kiddos, but I didn't want to overwhelm myself and am only taking two classes. At first I thought it might take forever this way too, but what is an extra two years or so compared to my sanity and grades? :p
I hope you get the transcript thing worked out. That's a good bit of money to owe.

Since the customer offered to pay fr school, forst have him pay what you oe so you can get your transcripts. Then make sure when you decide on your major, he pays for Everything up front. That way, you wont go 2 semesters, and for some reason, he stops funding. Also make sure he is paying for more than just the tuition, Books can be very expensive.
Also, what I would do, is tell this customer, "you know, I would love to go back to school, but I just dont know how I will ever graduate, needing to work at the same time." maybe he will also offer you some kind of extra cash every semester to help you with everything else so you dont need to work as much.

    Good luck

My only caveat here is that you're talking about a HUGE amount of money being 'invested' in you by one 'customer'.

It's possible that you've met a guy who is in fact a multi-millionaire such that paying out five figures seems like 'pocket money' to him, meaning that his motivations could be charitable and genuine.

But it's also possible that you've met a guy who is actually trying to establish a 'tit for tat' situation i.e. he continues to provide you what you want in terms of ongoing tuition money, and you provide him what he wants in terms of 'tit' etc. Logically speaking, he knows that going back to college part time is a long-term progression - that really has little value until the entire long-term progression is completed (i.e you get your degree). Thus if you accept his 'help' now and return to college for a semester, he also knows that every future sememster will put you in the position of needing more tuition money in order to keep the progression progressing.

Put bluntly, this situation will put you in a very 'weak' bargaining position in regard to keeping this guy happy over a long period of time in order for him to continue financing your tuition payments. This isn't the same as a customer giving a dancer a one-time shopping spree or a one time expensive gift ... it's closer to a 'sugar daddy' situation, but with a 2-4 year lease !

If you're cool with the possible future 'developments' and 'expectations' of such an arrangement, then fine. But if you're not cool with the possibilities, you may want to think twice before investing a semester's worth of time (and some lost dancing earnings) only to face a stressful 'showdown' when next semester rolls around and your customer's true motivations and expectations become all too apparent.

Even if he doesn't pay, you should still go back to school. Over time, I've learned that most of those guys never actually follow through. Some do, of course........I hope yours is one of those that does and then doesn't expect too much from you because of it.

Tell him that you want to go see an accountant together, to make sure this happens because "it really means a lot to me, and you too, I hope!" If he's being insincere, maybe that will shame him into letting you know if he's serious or not.

I wish you the best of luck! I finally decided to go back to school when I figured out what I really wanted to learn. A decade after dropping out! Heh!
