    Default Any soapmakers in here?!

Just curious if there were any other ladies in here who were interested, or do make soap. I've been interested in the soap making process for a couple years now, but I've never taken the time out to actually buy the materials and get to work. I think that will be my pet project during my spring break.

Back in my farmer girl 4-H days I would make soap out of the extra goat's milk we always had. You can make a crap load at one time in cool little shapes and give it as gifts. It's a good project if you have a friend into similar stuff. You're making me want to make soap again!!! I'm already thinking of all the different essential oils I would use.

Edited to add: It's not hard to make at all either. I'd compare the difficulty to slightly harder than making pudding

I've looked into soapmaking before, but was more interested in making bath and body products. Esp bath bomb thingies and solid bubble bath like they sell at Lush. I go through so many of them and it gets expensive. I think it would be fun to pick your own scents and colors, etc. Have not gotten around to it yet b/c all the supplies are more expensive in Canada and I'm not stripping up here. I might buy the supplies when I go home next week, but I also wish I had a friend to help me and make it more fun. And I don't want to buy all the stuff, do it once, then all that stuff just sits there. Anyway, I found this forum to be helpful:

i sometimes make soap that is all-vegan out of crisco, olive oil, and coconut oil. to make it you should go to a soapmaking website and you will need a lot of equipment:

the oils (several ounces of them)
    stainless steel pot (big)
    wooden spoons
    rubber gloves
    protective eyewear
red devil lye (don't use any brand except this one)
    essential oils
    photo thermometer
    molds
quilt or heavy blankets (for the soap molds to prevent cooling off too quickly)
    time

making this kind of soap requires about an afternoon as it's all about getting the lye solution and oils the same temperature (no easy task). you will spend hours hovering over the stove and preparing cold water baths for the ingredients. yet it's worth it!!!!

Mina: Why should I only use Red Devil Lye?

Also, on another site that I researched on soapmaking, they said it is safe and faster to use a handmixer to saponify (sp) the soap during trace.

believe it or not, that's what my soapmaking aunt and her soap books all said to use red devil lye and no other brand than that. perhaps it's a safety thing and red devil is an established brand? i don't know. you can find red devil in just about any grocery store. of course, with lye, ALWAYS wear gloves and something to protect your eyes. when you pour in the water (NEVER pour the lye into water), back away as soon as possible so the fumes don't get to you. lye is a base and is very caustic.

as for the handmixer, i don't know. i've always just stirred by hand. the trouble is that what you use for soap has to remain used for soap--no using the wooden spoons, pots, or handmixers for food after that.

i forgot to mention that you need a scale for the ingredients. i usually half the recipes i get online (because they make a lot of soap). the amounts of oils are measured by weight, not volume, so get an accurate scale.

for those who want a quicker way to make soap i recommend shaving castile soap flakes and shaping them into soap balls with water. you can buy kirk's castile soap in bars at any drugstore cheaply. or you can melt glycerine soap in the microwave and put it into molds and add glitter, herbs, or whatever.

Great links and info in this thread

Reading this has inspired me to make my Mom a spa basket for Mother's day.
