    Thumbs up Oprah is awesome.

I don't know if any of you caught the show "Building a Dream" on TV the other night, but I DVR'ed it and just watched it now and I had tears in my eyes all throughout. Basically, she's spent 5 years creating a huge 7th-12th grade boarding school in South Africa called "Oprah's Leadership Academy for Girls". She hired the best architects, designers, teachers, artists, etc. to help her build it. She also found a team of people to scour the most impoverished areas of South Africa to find the best and brightest girls for her school. All tuition is completely free, and she will pay for the university tuition for every single girl for the university of her choice, provided she graduates. At the opening ceremony, Nelson Mandela came onstage to make a speech, and OMG it was just great.

If there's any reruns, watch it! It's a great hour spent.

... stupid Tyra going on about how sluttly strippers are and acting like being fat is making her some damn role model.... go do something useful with yourself...

It was indeed great. I'm eagerly awaiting Oprah's school for girls here in the US.

I do understand people wanting Oprah to do things in the U.S....but the level of backwardness in some African countries is horrifying...Girls are literally not allowed to ride bikes or work or even read. They're treated worse than farm animals. (Even females of other races are not immune from threats- my friend M.'s sister was in Uganda [Peace Corps] and she FLED the country, over what I don't know...)

What would be cool is if Oprah would make an American foundation for college grads to teach & learn in Africa...Like a privatized Peace Corps.

Seriously. I'm a bit worried about why she felt the need to create these huge, elaborate schools, rather than several good ones. but she's still doing good, so power to her.

she'll never be able to make everyone happy, nor would she be interested in trying.

Let me say the really unpopular thing. I believe Africa was the only place Oprah could have built a School for (Black) Girls, and they would complete it.

I heard Oprah made a comment about doing this in the US, and why she didn't, and her partial answer was that it wouldn't be appreciated here...which I think is probably true.

I TOTALLY agree. I may take issue with some of Oprah's decisions and positions, but I can't POSSIBLY criticize her for this. I can barely manage to send my $25 a month to the humane society.

I have many problems with celebrity worship in our society, BUT: the people that roll their eyes at the likes of George Clooney, Angelina Jolie, and Oprah for at least trying to make the world a better place? They have a point when it comes to celebrities being involved in domestic politics, but that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about taking an interest in the horrors of Darfur, and orphans in Southeast Asia, and the conditions for girls in Africa.

Really, do the people who scoff at purely humanitarian actions think that celebrities should just roll around in their millions and NOT care, when a mere fraction of their income (not to mention their attention, and thus influence) can make a world of difference?

Oprah did that in that country partly because she thought that was her ancestral country of origin. Then last year she found out that her ancestral country was Cameroon instead. Several differnt tribes mostly in Cameroon, anyhow. A genetic trace-back technique was used. Anyhow, it's a generous thing for sure. Oprah is OK, even if I don't care for her choice of books.
I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

Customers are not entitled to grope, disrespect, or rob strippers. This is their job, not their hobby, and they all need income. Clubs are not just some erotic show for guys to view while drinking.

NOTE: anything I post here, outside of a direct quote, is my opinion only, which I am entitled to. Take it for what you estimate it is worth.

I believe it. Not only are decent public schools available to all children in this country, 99% of kids here don't honestly give a shit about education. They go to school to get by.

I saw an interview she recently gave and she said she went to the public schools and asked the students what did they need. They replied an Ipod, and other trivial items. When she asked the kids in Africa the majority said uniforms for school. I hate the public schools in america, but I must admit that if I had to choose between the two my decision would have been the same based on the African kids eagerness to learn and uncanny priorites. Damn, they make me look bad, lol.

In the US any kid with decent parental support can work hard and has a good chance of making it. In so many places in Africa, those kids have no hope. Why wouldn't she put the school in a place where it would make the most difference?

It bothers me that some people seem to think the US is the only place on earth where people deserve to have opportunities. Kids of any nationality are equally deserving of a bright future. Why would it bother anyone that she built the school outside of the US where is was more needed? Are certain people so scared of the possibility of a level playing field?

Ok let me clarify my first comment. I am all for improvement in other countries. I used to talk to my aunt all of the time about how it was in her come (Libya) and how she wishes she could improve things, so I grew up with a sense of Places Far Away Need Help. BUT... I'm saying that some folks, rich or not as rich, famous or not, are forgetting that this country needs a lil improvement ALSO. Not instead of, ALSO. Oprah DID do a show where she went out and met people in the US who were living in poverty. She was stunned by it. I'm glad that Oprah is aware, and willing to focus on those folks ALSO.

But then again, I think Angelina Jolie should have adopted a few American kids ALONG WITH her others.
