Ok this is not for everyone and it will make u way sicker but get it out of your system too - massage glands firmly. It will hurt and I did warn that it will make the symptoms worse. My BF did a massage therapy course and they actually warn not to do this so be careful.

Other than that sleep will make u get over it faster. If u can't sleep take something to knock u out so u do sleep - this might even be a flu med that is NOT a non drowsy one - i know u said u dont wanna take any more meds. Fluids are good too.

When I'm sick I take chewable vitamin C supplements and odorless garlic capsules (kills bacteria), and I drink a lot of 100% juices and water.

And rest rest rest as much as you can!

go to the doc and get antibiotics! if you have insurance, that is. I'm still moochin' off my dad's. I had the flu a couple of weeks ago, and on the day after my throat started hurting, i went to the doc and she gave me some azithromycin, and within a day and a half I was cured!

ERs are a bit quieter in the wee hours of the morning...I'm talking 4-6 AM. Urgent care centers are cheaper and more appropriate for what you are describing however. Maybe you have a 24 hour urgenct care near you? I'm sure the same volume:time rule would apply.

if it's just the flu anti-biotics won't help. anti-biotics cannot help with viruses and the flu is a virus.

    acupuncture -- http://www.acupuncture.com/conditions/index_flu.htm

I highly recommend it as it always helps me overcome colds, flus etc rather quickly.

Right. And since it's so common, unless you get the flu and it doesn't go away after a couple days, there's no reason to waste the money going to the UC or ER for antibiotics. Only reason I'd go to the hospital for the flu is if it didn't go away or it got gradually worse; then you have to worry about pneumonia.

I still say you have an ear infection. They can make you feel flulike with ear pain too as well.

Maybe boxingdoc will pop her head in here with some advice.

Cephalexin is good for ear infections, if that is what you have. Once you have started, however, make sure to finish the full 10 day course. I'm having similar crap right now...stuffy nose, sore throat and a clogged up ear, and have been diagnosed with strep throat. I pick up my antibiotics in the morning.

As for helping your ear drain, a few things to try: regular doses of plain sudafed to help dry up all the snot. If your nose is stuffy, you can use neo-synephrine nasal spray for 3 days _only_ to shrink your nasal passages....it should help your ear drain....do not use for longer than 3 days, or you will get rebound swelling worse than what you started with. As for home remedies, lots of water, orange juice and chicken broth (homemade broth if possible). I like high dose vitamin C myself. I'm also trying black elderberry syrup. (I got mine at Vitamin Shoppe. 2 teaspoons four times a day. Tastes like superconcentrated grape jelly). Most importantly, stay away from cigarette smoke....it makes everything worse.

Well, actually colds are viruses too! Antibiotics only help with bacterial stuff like infections and strep, etc.

This will sound nutty, but point a hair dryer on warm heat, low speed towards whichever ear hurts the worst. I've heard parents of kids with frequent ear infections that it helps ease the pain a bit. Please keep the dryer at least 6 inches from your head. I don't want you to burn yourself.
