Default What are your thoughts on this idea for better pole grip

Since my new pole is alot more slick than I am used to I started to look for ideas for better grip and safety for when I am ready to start training to do more advanced pole work. I came across these yoga grip gloves and thought they might work well.

Has anyone here tried something like these before? If so, how did you feel about them?

I now use a tiny bit of gillette shaving gel with a drop of water when I practice at home.

i prefer not to use grip aids on my stainless. if i'm doin a new trick, then i just have a spotter.

your grip will get stronger on the stainless...

however, if you HAVE to use something, i've heard taking a pair of rubber gloves (you know, the yellow ones that you use to wash dishes), and cut out the fingers.

    never tried it though.

i just keep a spray bottle of water nearby, with a towel. when i feel my hands getting a bit slippery, just a bit of water on my hands will fix the problem. it doesn't leave any weird residues on the pole, either.

you have to make sure there's not too much water on your hands. it's kinda like when you wash your hands, dry them off, and they're just slightly damp. the grip is perfect.

I just wipe the pole down at my club (as I don't own my own pole..........yet) with meothlated spirits and a paper towel or even spary a little metholated spirits on my hands. Otherwise, just put talcum powder on your hands.

Chalk will leave a white residue on everything.

They sell clear drying gel Dry Grip (get it at bowling/golf stores).

I first tell every student that they SHOULD NOT use grip aids! You need to strengthen your grip and your forearms! I only use grip aid to practice a new move! Never in a performance!

If you MUST us a gripping agent...use the Gillette Gel....less than a pea size is enough to do your hands thighs and calves. 1/10th the price of grip agents, and works 10 times better!

Clean your pole regularily with rubbing alcohol to ensure you have a proper grip!

Try this.....hoist baseball grip on the pole wth no aide or cleaning.....you slide correct?

Now clean it with alcohol...hoist again, and you grip! Shammies are probably the best cleaning cloth, as they absorb EVERYTHING off the pole!!

Alena, I appreciate what you're saying, totally, and give you serious Pole Queen Props, but have you worked in clubs recently that have ancient poles with horrible finish? I mean, it REALLY does throw your grip off.

I am very strong (due not just to dance but to the fact that I'm a massage therapist by day & have powerful hands and forearms) and yet I have trouble when the pole is low quality. One club will NOT allow you to even wipe them down, either, even if some newbie just greased the damned thing up with baby oil. They claim 'professionals' have to clean them.

I second the use of Dry Hands; I use it all the time. Still, someday when I get my own pole, I plan to get webcam lessons from the Queen!

    Rose...thanks for the compliment!

I was actually referring to home poles. I fully understand the condition of some of the poles in clubs currently.

I am curious how a club can tell you that you CANT clean the pole!!!!!

I would REFUSE to do a show if I was unable to clean the pole! But here in I work under contracts that state the club MUST provide me with a clean, safe, work environment, so I could get away with that!

As I stated above.....for the industry girls I teach, I suggest the gillette shave gel!! Here you can get the clear gel which does not leave the gross color on the hands...and it seems to not congeal as bad and leave residue on the pole!

Thats really disgusting that some clubs wont let u clean the pole esp since some dancers rub themselves all over it.

Our MC is really tall and he jumps up on the stage and wipes the pole done. Customers always tell him he has the best job in the world LOL.

As for the home pole I agree with Alena. You dont wanna practice in gloves or u will not develop your own gripp and performing in gloves wont look good.

When I first started pole dancing I had to wipe down the pole in between every move but as u gain experience and more strength u will find that you will have a better grip and wont have such sweaty palms.
I was teaching a student the other day who had very very sweaty hands and I think a lot of it comes from being nervous.

i agree that grip aids are cheating

but you should try that "dry grip" stuff that golfers use

itll help a lot esp if you have sweaty hands

At my club they leave a towel with alcohol on it next to the stairs, they expect us to want to clean the pole if we are working it. We aren't supossed to wear body oils or even lotions, but some girls do it anyway...

I've found that scrubbing your hands with lemon juice helps you grip better (I've got really sweaty hands when i dance) and if you go to the bar they have lemon slices right there. Just make sure to dry your hands (and if you use a slice) get all the pulp off otherwise you might be walking around with it in your hair (and it looks like boogers, lol)

ugh... my club is one of those clubs that wont let you wipe down the pole, so jsut to be utterly annoying I simply refuse to do stage until I have witnessed it has been cleaned before me!

I think it is gross for a club to expect us to dance on a dirty stage!

Another thing I do when I can not get the pole cleaned is pour alcohol )no the drinking stuff, but the sterile stuff ie. Isocol) all over me, this will add grip to me and also stop any germs on the pole getting on me!

I am not trying to cheat, LOL! I am trying to not crack my head open on the corner or sides of my 4x4x1 stage while trying to learn advanced tricks.

Thanks to everyone for all the advice and suggestions on various products and ideas for improved grip

I found that playing with my daughter on the monkey bars and poles at playgrounds help strengthen my grip, and it builds calouses. I'm one of the people that will fall off of any pole, no matter what kind or size. It takes a lot of work to stay on there!!

Hand Sanitizer works good if you ensure that you are not using one that contains a moisturizer, or Vitamin E or Aloe.

    Nice suggestion!
