I have an accountant. I see her whenever I need to have a meeting. At the minimum it is once a year due to filing my taxes. I have also met with her many times a year one time. The cost varies depending on how much informtion I need, meetings done, and time it takes to prepare and file my annual tax.
Usually around the grand or so mark. Kinda expensive yet worth every dollar and then some! Ever since I have been using my accountant I have ALWAYS been given a decent refund! WOOHOO!!
One year I was refunded over $8000 (or near that amount). Plus having an accountant is a good "line of defense" against the Tax Department (ATO here in Aust.) if I am ever audit-ed.

a refund? I don't see how that's even possible, but maybe it's different in Australia.
Here we don't have withholdings and pay estimated taxes.....unless you're purposely overpaying just to get a refund, which seems counter-productive. You could put it in the bank and earn interest on it.
I don't use an accountant, but I'm going to next year since my tax situation is about to get much more complicated. But as it is now....I'm just recording money made and writing off a few things. TurboTax does the rest.

I have an accountant. It's too hard to do my own tax as a sole trader.

I have an accountant, but I do my tax returns myself via turbotax and save the accountant's fees for serious financial planning matters.
Before I got married I used Turbo Tax. Now I use my husband's accountant since we file jointly. 2006's taxes didn't cost him much to do, he charged us $250 for doing our personal AND business taxes, and we even got our refund in a week![]()

Here in Australia... I earn my money, get all the deductions and then declare tax on what is left over... since what is left over after all the legitmate business deductions is usually around the $20,000 or so mark (I claim alot of business deductions from my car to my internet and phone etc) I actually do not pay that much in tax overall.
Plus what I pay (compulsory) each quarter is determined by my previous financial year's tax return. Since my income is so up and down each year I have mainly been over-paying due to previous tax year being a high income year.
This time around tho' (after June 30) I may have to pay more tax as my 2004-2005 financial year was a low income year compared to this financial year (so far).
Naturally, yes, the tax system is definately different to the US.
