Default Question for artist types about stretching canvas

Can you stretch a canvas on a frame after painting the picture?

I mean, obviously it's going to be possible--but how advisable is it?

I have never simply painted on a large piece of canvas, but it would seem to me that there could be advantages to it.

    What type of paint?

I'm thinking this isn't such a good idea, but might be possible with some mediums.

Fuck, I was worried about that--cracking being higher on my list of suspected problems than distortion (though I thought of that too).

I was unaware of how bad it could get, though. Little flecks of paint, no thanks, lol! I would not be bothered by a little mess to vacuum, but the damage to the image, forget it. And though I haven't used oils for a long time, only acrylics, I was thinking of trying them again.

But thank you all for your advice.

Maybe just mount it on a board and then have it framed?

Yeah that might work, and the convenience factor could be retained. So long as it was tightly bonded to the backing, it could be possible.

just stretch it before u painty it, but u need to keep it stretched while your painting, just use masking tape and tape it down on a hard surface while you paint. Then let it dry for a few days and you can then frame it or leave it unframed.
