    Angry Stinky sponge!!

I don't mean the contraceptive kind either.

My kitchen sponge seems to start smelling bad after only one week of it being new. I have bought so many sponges, of various brands. I don't let it ferment in stagnant water and I squeeze out the excess water after I'm done with it. I "trained" my fiance to do the same. I've even tried spraying it with Lysol to kill bacteria.
But still, it smells so bad!! I can smell the sponge on my hands and on the utensils I eat with, consequently ruining my appetite. Maybe I am just being a crazy pregnant woman but I don't think so.

Anyone have any advice out there?

I think all sponges are gross. I use washrags to do my dishes and wash them regularly. I'm pretty sure that sponges are breeding grounds for bacteria. Ewww... I hate that smell.

Microwave it! When it starts smelling bad, throw it in there for a few seconds and it will kill all the bacteria in there. My mother use to boil them. I think the microwave is easier. I also clean my sponges with antibacterial soap after I use them. Seems to help.

There are antibacterial sponges on the market & they do prevent the nasty sponge fermentation.

I bleach or boil sponges or toss them in the dishwasher. (Germ OCD much?)

There are also brushes you can buy to avoid having a rag or sponge getting funky in the sink.

Noooo it's not OCD - bacteria isn't anything anyone would want to put in their mouth indirectly. It's gross!!

I will try boiling it today and see if that helps.

    Thanks ladies!

I put mine in the silverware holder in the dishwasher and run it thru. And between washes, I rinse it thoroughly with my antibacterial dish soap. I've also heard that you can keep it in the freezer between uses to stop the growth of bacteria.

I wish I had a dishwasher. Life would be so much better. I am putting that on a list of must-haves for our next home. By the time I have one, I'm sure all kinds of non-dish objects will be in there.
I read somewhere on here that you can also wash stripper shoes this way! I have even heard of people washing their dildos in there too.

My mom puts them through the dishwasher. I have this little suction cup holder on the side of my sink to keep mine dry. I really don't use sponges. I have one of those flat scrubby things for when I wash things by hand and those antibacterial (I know, bad bad... but they're easy to use and toss) wipes for countertops.

^^^Yeah, my dildoes get washed in the dishwasher. I like being sort of edgy and countercultural even when doing mundane, domestic things like washing the dishes. Of course, I like to have spotlessly clean dildoes too.

I spray my sponges with bleach, even though it says on the sponge packages not to bleach sponges. I think, though, that's just because it breaks the sponge down and makes it disintegrate sooner, not because it causes some kind of weird and/or dangerous chemical reaction. But then, I love bleach and will bleach almost anything that stays still long enough.

I don't use sponges because I'm so freaked out about the bacteria. It's funny because I'm only a germaphobe about certain things. I use brushes instead and I run them through the dishwasher as well.

You are better off throwing away a kitchen sponge after a week anyway so don't sweat it. They are cheap, just replace them. It's better for your health and your kitchen will smell sweet again!

Oh, I wasn't talking about you. I have a clean/ing hangup...I can throw tantrums over a dirty house & won't cook in a kitchen unless I clean it first.

Be careful about microwaving, Make sure the sponge is very wet, otherwise it can be very dangerous.

yuck..sponges are breeding grounds for all kinds of bacteria. you don't need a sponge, just use a washcloth. go to target and get a 12 pack of cheap washcloths for like $3 or $4. then wash after using it for a couple of days at most. less waste by not throwing anything away too.

spraying bleach won't penetrate the sponge...you need to get inside it..you need to soak it in a bleach solution.

if you microwave a wet sponge...it needs to be for 1 minute to kill all the germs.

make sure your sponge gets totally dried out, dont let it sit there wet.

but again, i'd just use a rag. then you don't have to keep wasting money buying sponges that should be replaced at a minimum weekly

I have one of those sponges that is like a scotch brite on one side and a sponge on the other and it comes with some kind of soap already in it. I haven't noticed a smell. Probably should get some wash cloths though. It's really gross using a spong now that I think about it.

I just use those...scrubby things. Like, it's a bunch of plastic mesh which gets the crud off. And then if I have to wipe something down it's washcloth all the way.

I used to have sponges but they'd get stinky or erode and I'd have little spongy bits floating about. Ew.
