It's March Madness time...(who's up for a little contest)

One part fill in the bracket + one part sports betting (spread bets and over/unders). Its a bit complicated, so I'd like to know if there's any interest before I post the rules and point spreads for the first round. Otherwise this will just become a random thread to muse about the tournament, which school has the coolest mascot, most annoying coach, hottest cheerleaders, crappiest pep band and other yada, yada.

Winner gets to flash this little guy at everyone else in a post. -->

Second place gets this guy as consolation (brick wall not included). -->

Last place gets a lecture from Jenny (about what I don't know, but I'm sure she'll think of something).

Well we have four, I'll consider that interest enough. Perhaps we'll pick up a couple more by Thursday morning.

Okay. You will start the game with a bank of 100 points.

Part 1 - Fill In The Bracket

    Pick your Sweet 16.

Each pick that survives to the sweet 16 = 15 points
Makes it through first round, but loses in second = 5 points
Loses in first round = 0 points
Bonus for getting an entire regional correct = 20 points
Bonus for getting 12/16 right = 25 points
    14/16 right = another 25 points
    All 16 right = another 25 points

Then fill in the brackets the rest of the way. You will do this TWICE, once now, and once again next week in a 'second chance' bracket when the field of 16 is decided.

Original Bracket Points / Second Chance Bracket points
Each regional finalist correct = 20 points / 15 points
Each regional champion correct = 35 points / 25 points
Each national finalist correct = 75 points / 60 points
    National champion correct = 125 points / 100 points

Part 2 - Sports Betting (optional)

You do not have to participate in the SB portion. But it gives an opportunity to make points off your existing point totals (this is why you start with 100) even if you get reamed in the fill in part of the contest. Your picks in the SB part have no bearing whatsoever on your bracket picks so its perfectly legal to contradict yourself.

This is the source I get the spread and totals lines from.

    http://www.vegas.com/gaming/index.html

Granted these numbers change several times a day, but for contest purposes we must all work off the same page, and I want to give you the numbers as soon as possible, so you have time to make your picks.

You can bet either a spread bet, or a totals bet. You can also do parlays of up to four bets whether they be spreads, totals, or a combination of the two. Since there technically is no gambling, there is no house edge, so we will just use even money rules (i.e. no bet 11 to win 10) on payoffs.

Simple spread or total bets pay 1-1
    Two bet parlays pay 3-1
    Three bet parlays pay 7-1
    Four bet parlays pay 15-1
If part of a parlay bet ends in a tie, the remainder reverts back to the next lower payoff.

There will be betting limits on each round.

1st round: Minimum-Maximum: 10-20 points (must be in 5 point increments)
2nd round: Minimum-Maximum: 15-30 points (must be in 5 point increments)
3rd round: Minimum-Maximum: 20-60 points (must be in 10 point increments)
4th round: Minimum-Maximum: 20-100 points (must be in 10 point increments)
    National semifinals: Maximum: 200 points
    Championship: Maximum: 500 points

You can wager your entire points balance for that round, but you cannot go over it.

When betting a spread, simply list the team your betting on followed by the amount of your bet in parenthesis, for example:

    Florida (10 pts)

When betting a total list the matchup, whether you're taking the UNDER or OVER in caps, followed by the amount of your bet in parenthesis, for example:

Florida - Jackson State OVER (10 pts)

When betting a parlay, group the bets together underneath a heading with the bet amount alongside the heading, and number each item under it:

    Parlay (10 pts)
    1. Florida
    2. Florida - Jackson State OVER

    Parlay (10 pts)
    1. Florida
    2. North Carolina
    3. Kansas

In order to count, all bracket picks and bets must be posted on the MB before the start of that teams respective game.

I'll be there as usual. Will also be at the San Antonio Regional. Just praying Texas A&M makes it to San Antonio to get that "home court" advantage everybody is talking about.

Doc, why are you betting beyond the Sweet Sixteen now and not next week? How does Memphis lose the South Regional finals if you don't have them going there? I thought you could only hedge on the bets.

I'll play the women, too, in case some pinkies want to go there. Plus I can bet UConn and have faith in Duke.

Thanks the everyone for pointing out the goof. Although you shouldn't have. Just think of the potential points I would have lost if Memphis makes some deep penetration here.

    Anyways, its fixed now.

Go Blue Raiders. Y'all look good. 29-3 with a 26-game winning streak. Everyone's from TN or an adjoining state.

Gen you write BETS and list Old Dominion and Albany for 10, 15 or 20 of the 100-point stake Doc gave you. Your team "wins" even if it loses by less than the point spread.

It's a statistical anomaly of the game that favored teams cover a spread of 16+ less than half the time. But in the NCAA tournament, I think you see high-seed teams practicing execution more intensely than during the regular season.

Yeah, I know if they get by Purdue that Florida will probably trounce them, but we gotta keep the faith with Papa Lute (at least for a few more years....)

Damn you Duke! Damn you! Best game and only upset of the night and the result cost me severely.

These will update again tomorrow after Round 1B. They are not technically credited to your score until the end of the first round so you still can't wager over your original 100 on remaining 1st round games, but I wanted to give you a progress report for the 2nd round, hence the safe number.

I bet a women's game for fun; there is no spread. I was hoping to lure Jenny in so she could end up lecturing to herself.

Interestingly enough, there are no spreads on lots of regular season men's games that have no betting interest. And that enabled the discovery of a statistical anomaly within the game.

Yeah, I know if they get by Purdue that Florida will probably trounce them, but we gotta keep the faith with Papa Lute (at least for a few more years....)
