    Default at home hair color?

^Im the short one in the black dress

Hey I recently cut my hair a bit and added bangs. My hair color is a teensy bit lighter and a little more reddish. I want to dye it cause this last color is icky with my skin and makeup(black liner and red lipstick). I'm going for a sort of rockabilly look but I don't know what color to go. Any suggestions?

    Thank..love you guys

With your skintone youd look gorgeous with a deep chestnut or auburn color...maybe with some lighter highlights

I'd say try lightening (and removing the reddish) the whole thing, then adding some chunky darker streaks. That's a good rocker look.

BTW- I like the modesty, cally yourself the short on in the pic, and the one in the black dress. Ya, that's true, but a better description would be that you're the hot one!

Good rockabilly looks are pretty much always classic looking.....think classic, rich colors.....a deep, brilliant red would be nice......rich, dark brunettes are good too.....usually highlights are a no-no if you're trying for the rockabilly thing....sometimes people go with two tone hair, but it tends to be pretty rich and solid....or there's always blonde, but rockabilly blondes are usually platinum (or close to it) and better done by a pro.....with your skin tone, I think a super-deep red would be really hot

Like most everyone said, go with rich colors... Think Betty Page, or Lucille Ball. You can even go platinum, like Gwen Stefani.

If you'd like to make your look a little more rock-n-roll, there's exteme contrasting color Personally, I like the color placement in that example, but I think it would be more complimenting on you if you replaced the black with a rich auburn, almost orange tone.

Any way you go, DO NOT DIY it!!! You're going to be doing a pretty drastic change to your hair and if you don't see a good colorist, you'll most likely end up with very brassy or green results. Haircolor is more complicated than picking out a box, especially if you're making a dramatic change.

Mia- You really think it's neccesary to go pro? I'm naturally blonde, and went to a really rich, deep red on my own about a year ago, and it looked really good. Granted, I know a bit about haircoloring.....so maybe that helped....you know, went with a (permanent)light brown base and darker lowlights; and layered over the top of that with a gorgeous purple-red based deep red demi, and orange-red based over that.....I had a lot of junk in there, but it looked beautiful....I think if you're going darker, a professional job isn't the only way to look good, so long as you go in stages and layer colors to get where you want. Buuuuut, you're the pro, so you'd know more about it than me.....

Kick ass! I love hearing about people who are great at home colorists. The problem is most women do not know how, or that it's even nessacary, to fill the hair with it's missing pigments in order to get a rich, even color. When going darker, most just grab a box of color and expect thier hair to turn out like the pic on the box.... nope, doesn't work that way, especially when you're making a dramatic change and you want a specific result. That's when I start seeing green hues in the salon and women paying a lot of money to get back to just normal looking hair.

Then there's color application techniques. Most will pick up a box of permanent haircolor and repeatedly apply the same color from scalp to ends every time they need a root touch up. Typically, you'll start to notice muddy, uneven haircolor over time, particullarly with people who are going darker than their natural color. There's also the issue of the damage to the hair. Very few have the time, knowledge and skill to formulate a permanent color for the regrowth at the scalp, and a demi-permanent for the mid shaft through ends, in order to minimize damage and optimize vibrancy and color clarity.

If you do have a strong grasp of the color wheel, knowledge about remaining pigment, access to more professional products (the thing that I HATE about box color is the inability to choose your developer), product knowledge, and a lot of patience, then I say go for it. If you don't then go to a pro and save yourself a ton of money in possible future color correction.

Not to hijack the thread here or anything, but I think this is pretty relevant.. I'm a natural redhead, as you can see from my avatar. On Valentine's day I went to a salon and dyed it a really vibrant, rich red color. The stylist mixed this bright off the wall red and a copper color close to my own hair color. I LOVED it.. and I was really careful with it, and it all washed out within 2 weeks. I'm going to wait a few more weeks and I want to try dyeing it myself... I want to get the same type of color, what brands should I use and what do I do? I'm clueless!

About the boxed color, good point, Miss Mia! I buy color from Sally if I do it myself, so it's still cheap, but you have better choices, particularly when you're looking for Demis.....haha, I have a good grasp of color now, but I had some hilariously orange hair once when I was about 18.....I somehow got the bright idea that I could just bleach out some burgundy...haha...that was awesome. So after a lot of trial and error, I've got so I'm pretty good with my hair....but, if you're pretty clueless, I'd have to agree that seeing a pro is your best bet, especially since all the ladies here are in a line of business that your looks are really inportant to. When I was 18, I was in my freshman year, and didn't have a job....so my orange hair was just an "oops". But if that happened now, well I'd probably be spending tons of money getting it corrected, right?
May I ask where you went to cosmetology school? Seeing as you're also in CO....I'd like to become a stylist at some point, and if you recommend your school, I'd love any advice!

To Aubrey.....my best advice for brilliant reds is using a demi......it stains the outer cuticle , and actually keeps it's color better than permanents. Red is a larger molecule than yellows and blues.....so if red is the base, it slips out of the hair faster, particularly with permanents, because the cuticle can't be as tightly sealed with a great deal of red molecules. So rather than trying to trap red in the cuticle (which leads to quick fading) staining the outside with a semi or demi permanent works better.

just own up to it....your colorist might give you a dirty look ; but if they know what you've been doing, they can do the best and least-damaging job possible for you.
