Default HELP! What do I tell school about my job???

I have been battling my university over in-state tuition and I'm getting ready to appeal again. I need to prove that I am financially independent of my parents (which I am) but the problem is since I am a dancer I don't have a job on paper. I am really not comfortable standing in front of the appeals board and saying "I'm a stripper" and I'm worried that will actually hurt my case because it will be more of a temporary job rather than a career that would help show I am establishing roots and permanent intent to stay in this state. What other jobs can I use to explain my income as an "independent contractor" and how do I prove the money I make? I don't want to bring them a bank statement. I keep a record book of all the tips I make, but that's hardly legal proof of income. I'm not ashamed of my job- all of my friends know I dance. But I don't want my teachers finding out and I sure don't want my classmates finding out and bringing their broke asses into the club! I am really scared that I have screwed myself over big time by having this job.... How do I explain my income without having to explain I dance?? HELP!!

You could get a work verification on club stationery saying you worked there for such and such a time, or produce a tax return for 2006 showing you worked in an in state business and showing a local residence and income for all of last year.

Wouldn't you just need proof of residence then? In NY that's all I needed to determine residency. Unless you're trying to get financial aid, in which case you are pretty much S-O-L. You could use the old bartender excuse. Nothing will work if you don't follow IRS guidelines and file taxes like you should be. You need PROOF of income, sorry.

For right now, can you get a "regular job" and just tell them that you just transitioned from your bartending job to "X" job. Once the appeal is over, ditch job "X". If they want to know how you were managing for the past two months, tell them you lived off of savings. That's all I can think of....

Why do they need proof of income for in-state tuition?? I have only ever heard of them requiring residency proof, which is a copy of a lease usually. Can you post exactly what the requirements are that you're trying to pass, word for word?

Also, if you filed your 2006 taxes and claimed yourself on your return - ie, your parents couldn't claim you as a dependent this time, then for all intents and purposes, THAT is considered proof enough that you are financially independent from your parents.

Other positions that could explain extra income:

*nanny/babysitter, professional organizer, aromatherapist, animal trainer, interior decorator, feng shui consultant, website design, ebay reseller, Avon*

I had to do the same thing to get my apartment. My manager wrote on the club letterhead that I was gainfully employed and how much approx. I make a month. If need be, just tell the truth...you are SELF-EMPLOYED by Independent Contract. They technically don't need to know any more than that. I hope this was of some help to you. I'm sorry you are going through this.

well, LEGALLY i am a resident. but for TUITION purposes I am not. I need to prove that I did not move to the state solely for educational purposes. I have leases, W2s (where I claimed myself), voter registration, car registration, etc etc etc. All the papers that prove I've been living here. I have 2 things I need to prove: 1) that I plan to stay in this state permanently (i.e. buy a house if i had more money) and 2) that I am currently empoloyed and make enough to pay my rent/bills/etc on my own. And I want to do this without disclosing to my school that I am a dancer.

Laylas, all of those job suggestions are really helpful! I'll have to see which ones I can pull off most believably. I like the idea of Avon but I'm wondering if they would want any proof that I'm affiliated? I buy from Mary Kay and I'll talk to my MK lady and see if she'll "hire" me on her team...

what i do is say im a waitress or bartender at a nightclub or bar. usually the clubs that employ you are registered with the state under some parent company, so a notice from that is sufficient.

Yeah, just say you were a waitress or whatever and now you're a bartender at a strip club. The managers will probably even write you a letter saying so.

Yep. Ask your manager to write you a letter on CORPORATE letterhead, not the club's letterhead.

I have never heard of a university wanting proof of WHY you moved to the state though. How does one "prove" they intend to stay anywhere permanently?? That is retarded and sounds scammish to me. Sorry you have to deal with all that!

What state are you in? I did this last year in FL, and something I learned is that they make the requirements for proving residency sound way more complicated/ involved than they actually are. I ultimately forged a letter on letterhead that I invented because my friend's business (which I claimed to be "working for," with her permission of course!) didn't have letterhead of its own, and I was fine. I mean, I had to give them other documents, such as DL and voter registration, but those were legit. Come to think of it, is part of your problem that your documents aren't back-dated a year or more? That is, did you register to vote no later than March 2006? Was your DL issued no later than March 2006, etc?

I'll admit that it sounds like your state (assuming it's not FL) is making you jump through flaming hoops. If it IS FL, I can 100% help you; PM me. Otherwise please post which state you're in, and, as Bridgette (?) suggested, the verbatim requirements you have to meet. There is hope!

I think that there is a new law (or rule or whatever) on the books (within the last year or so) that says if you are under 30 and have been either supported by your parents or continuously in college, that your parents can still claim you as a dependent. If she is dependent on out-of-state parents, then arguably she should be paying out-of-state tuition.

I bet if you can present your parent's tax return showing that you are NOT claimed as a dependent, that should be sufficient for the appeal. How about voter registration, driver's license, local bank accounts, your own personal tax returns and any state income taxes paid by you? can you get those items to present?

Can you claim that you are selling on ebay or something? Lots of people make money that way (myself included) and there is no "boss" to call for references. You also might claim doing something artistic like faux finish painting or graphic design or something. That kind of contract artist work is usually done independently, too.

Ooooo! I just had an idea! Get a business license for your area. Building a business from scratch can show intent to settle in your new home. Most sole proprietor licenses are less than $100, and you can claim anything on it. Titles such as internet sales and service, should work and be just fine with most municipalities.

I had to do the same things as you. Basicially, for tuition help in school( grants/loans) if your parents help you, then the state/government gives you less tuition. If you can prove that you are independant and that your parents do not support you in school, then you get more money. But you need to prove that you are independant from them. I had to provide copies of all my bills, in my own name, to show I paid my own rent, electric, gas, phone, proving I did not live with my parents. I also my mother to write a letter stating that I did not live with her, and that she does not support me or ever plan to support me.
You need proof that you live in that state permenantly and did not move there for education purposes because a lot of kids try to scam and move to another state for school, and try to say their parents don't help, just to get more tuition help, when in reality their parents are sending them money every month.

I however, was not a dancer when I did this, I had a real job, so I did not have the issues you are running into.

You only need to prove 2 months of income. You could say you were workign as a nanny under the table and have a friend( or I gues syou could even make it up yourself) writed a letter statign you were working under the table as a nanny, and write down your weekly salery. You could also have reciepts printed out for payment, like paystubs.

You could say you were workign as a freelance makeup artist, and write out a ledger of clients you worked on inthoes 2 months and the income you made.

Problem with all this is that now you are claiming under the table income to a government agency, so you better made damn sure you claim it on yrou taxes and pay taxes on it, or your gonna run into a problem.

How can you prove you plan on being a permenant resident without buyign a house there? Maybe start collecting information for jobs in that area pertaining to your degree your working towards? Proving that when you do graduate form college, you plan on staying in that state and pursuing a job in your field in that state. I really cant think of any other ways to prove you plan on living there permenantly.

    ^^Under 30??? Wow.

Anyway the tax return thing is what I was getting at. If you are claiming yourself on your own taxes, then obviously the parents AREN'T claiming you as dependent, and that is the most legal proof one can have that they are not dependent on parents.

But she's saying they want much more than that. Proof of current job, income, etc. That sounds a bit ridiculous but if she can post her state and exactly what they're saying the requirements are, I'm sure we can help her come up with something. A letter on the club's corporate (not with clubname, but the COMPANY name - whatever they put on the credit card bills like Trop Inc) letterhead ought to work - saying she's a bartender or waitress and naming $x weekly. Since they seem to be wanting detailed income info, I might shy away from saying I sell on ebay or otherwise work online - that's hard to prove if you don't have the bank statements or SOMETHING to back up your claim.

Showing utility bills in your own name is good too - shows that YOU are the one responsible for your living expenses.

That's a good idea. She can say she runs a home based business too
