    Default Kansasian (Kansian?)

Ladies – I have a friend (an ex-dancer, so she deserves our love and assistance) moving from Fort Lauderdale to….
Kansas. I have advised against it – but there is nothing I can do. While considering the move and places and stuff she is looking for, like what the good neighbourhoods are, what she can expect to pay in rent (she has 2 kids and 3 dogs – and a husband. She is in a position though, to pay several months up front, I think), and all that. The job that they are moving for is in Lenexa; I understand it is a suburb of Kansas City? Yes, no? So from wherever there is a convenient commute we would like any and all Kansasian information. Someone MUST be from Kansas. Anyone? Anyone?

Oh boy. Tell her to get ready for culture shock!! It's been a long time since I travelled through there and since she's not dancing anymore I don't have much to say. But yes, Lenexa is a suburb of KC. From what I saw, I liken Kansas City to......uh.... NYC, with a mullet

FWIW, the correct pronunciation is Kansan.

Lenexa is part of a group of KC suburbs collectively known as "Shawnee Mission". SM is more or less KC's "white flight" area, which is precisely why its one of the few places in metro KC I'll stay in a motel while there.

If you're worried about it being a bit too countrified, well lets just say its not going to be Ft. Lauderdale, but in all honest opinion culturally its probably closer to Ft. Lauderdale than it is the rural outstate area where I live.

As far as rent prices or commuting goes, is her job in Lenexa, or is that where she's planning on residing? In any instance I can assure the prices for housing will be WAY cheaper than Florida, albeit those same numbers are high by Kansas standards. These links should give you some idea.

I lived in the Kansas City suburbs for a while. Johnson county (where Lenexa is) is actually a really nice area, and in Leawood where I lived, it was as cultured as any other place I've been. The Beverly Hills of KC, although that is probably damning with faint praise. Good shopping, lots of development. It was a fun place to enter my teenage years.

Just don't go too far west of Topeka. It's a whole different world out there...

    is she going to dance?

lenexa would be a great place for her to live. like doc says, it's a suburb of kc. rent and things will be high (for ks) expect to pay maybe 800+ (min) for a decent place with a yard and room for the kids in johnson county (lenexa is in johnson county) 1k-1200 is more like it for a nice place.

johnson county has i think the 6th highest per capita income in the US...if you are comfortably off, you will be comfortable there.

if he doesn't mind commuting from a smaller town to lenexa, there is a little backwaters town called gardner, where rent is much more affordable and it's right off the highway, so he can get to work fine. there is a home depot, a pizza hut, some bars, and a grocery store. that's it. small town living at it's smallest. a boring, hellish place. i wouldn't choose to live there.

other small towns...de soto, eudora...those are on highway k10 between lawrence, a college town and very fun, cool, *expensive* place, and KC. you will pay several hundred dollars less in rent in these towns.

another suburb: olathe, also in johnson county. affordable rent, not too much fun, either, but who cares. you are right there near kc.

no matter where they go, make sure they eat at MOM'S KITCHEN in gardner or olathe. damn, that is some good stuff. i hope she likes biscuits and gravy.

if she's dancing, i can give her info about that, too.

I grew up in KC. Lenexa is a nice area. It's close to a HUGE mall- Oak Park. Kansas City in my opinion is a nice place to live. There's a misconception often that KC is Hick's Ville or whatever but it's more like a regular medium sized city. It has all the convenices of the city but it's also low in crime (on the KS side especially Lenexa and Johnson County, Leawood etc are nice areas) and inexpensive (compared to most other cities.) In Lenexa and Johnson County you can get a huge new house for the price of a condo in Boston.

The people will be really "Mid-west" and she will be suprised with how friendly they are!

KC is a nice city, nothing wrong with it at all! It has a major airport, lots of shopping, anything you could need.

The cost is dramatically lower than FtLauderdale, much much lower than most other big cities.

yeah, kansas isn't so bad. surprisingly. people are pretty much the same whereever you go, there's some good, and a lot of dim wits (not just in KS).
the biggest thing to watch out for, is conservative christian bullshit.

there's a lot of really good places to check out:

the plaza- http://www.countryclubplaza.com/, shopping (armani exchange, gap, bebe, white house black market, Lucky, etc.), food (cheesecake factory, PF Changs, Classic Cup, and a variety of specialty shops ranging from cute popcorn stands to upscale private dining), hotels, entertainment (live music, horse-drawn carrriage rides-they have the little lit up cinderella ball carriages (sorry, i have ALWAYS wanted to ride in one, but never have, and i think they're really NEAT!) and they have gondola rides as well)
an interesting little tid bit of info on the plaza- it was the first outdoor shopping center opened in the US. oooo.... ahhhhh..... now i KNOW you wanna go there!
o, and all the parking is free. hell to the yizzeah.

westport- historic district of KC, which has been converted to a sort of bar district with the occasional restaurant. its not the sleazy bar districts that are trashy, etc. it's actually pretty nice. they keep it fairly clean and its not overly crowded nor rowdy, depending on where you go. if you're looking for rowdy however, there's a few places that can satisfy that need. a lot of concerts in this area as well. it's right north of the plaza.
one of my fav restaurants is here, it's called Sung Son Vietnamese Bistro. you can get a meal for 2 there for around 15 dollars, but it is absolutely AMAZING!! when you walk in, you'd thnk you were gonna pay around 30 a peice. it's beautiful. also, because it's the bar district, you can pretty much park your car and walk around bar hopping. the great part is, because it's also a pretty historic place (convergance of the oregon trail, california trail, and santa fe trail) there's little plques everywhere, so... you get freakin' SMASHED and as you walk around you read the plaques! you never remember the bits of history that you learned, but its fun.
a bar to check out is Karma right around the corner from Sung Son, a very chill place.

Bo Lings- a chinese restaurant. it's at 95th and Metcalf, they serve dim sum on sundays. it's hella freakin' good. there's one int he plaza too, i think.

Oak Park Mall- it's an ok mall, not GREAT, but it doesnt suck either. i guess the way i see it, a mall is a mall is a mall. they dont have a hot topic though. however they DO have about a bazillion gaps, abercrombies, hollisters, and american eagles.
