Default Where would I get euros?

It just dawned on me that my godchild's bday is quickly approaching and I had intended to give him cash in the form of euros for his upcoming trip to France. I've never traveled internationally and haven't a clue where I can get my hands on euros in the states. I know when I went to Canada, I just exchanged there, but I wanted to give my brother something more thoughful than just plain old US cash. Can anyone point me in the right direction???

Most US banks I assume can do it. You may have to call ahead or you may have to have an account?? Most airports have the little counter that exchange many currencies. The airport and bank may charge a decent fee.

Not quite sure how but I have a decent sized chunk of euro coins in a glass.

Yeah, tomorrow I'm gonna call some of the bigger banks out here....I live in a big enough city, I hope it's easy to get my hands on. I did think of the airport, but I have no desire to step foot in either O'Hare or Midway....they're much too busy and ridiculous (although I wish I had thought ot looking into it when I was at the airport flying back from boston the other day, but that's my own stupidity). If anyone else has any suggestions, please let me know. Thanks!

Cool ....I'll definitely check with the banks tomorrow. For some reason I was thinking that regular banks might not handle that. Silly me, I guess.

PS ... I did a google search before posting here and I got a million currency converting/exchange rate websites and things of that nature.

    Ummm......Europe?
"He will come in one of the pre-chosen forms. During the rectification of the Vuldrini, the traveler came as a large and moving Torg! Then, during the third reconciliation of the last of the McKetrick supplicants, they chose a new form for him: that of a giant Slor! Many Shuvs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Slor that day, I can tell you!"

I hope you're being sarcastic, silverback. I'm not the one going to France, my brother is and instead of giving him US cash, I was hoping to give him Euros to make his birthday present more meaningful and thoughtful.

I have a currency problem as well. Found some old French frank notes last week. 120 franks worth about $19. I believe they expire in 2009 (http://www.cartref.demon.co.uk/eurofaq.htm ) and have to be converted by the large French government bank. Someone told me for a relatively large fee someone on the Internet will convert it. (also found a 100 Belgium frank note worth around $2.50)

Why don't you just go to the nearest airpost and exchange it there... you will fiind plenty of places.

When I travel, I usually take money out of the ATM (usually cirrus or mac or whatever) instead of changing because you get the up to date rate and no fees (depending on your bank's international withdrawl fees). It might be better to give cash for deposit. Or traveller's checks, which I usually keep on hand for emergencies. (Oh, that was good one time in Botswana, when NONE of my cards would work at the ATMs -- I used all $50 I had left to call my parents for three minutes to wire me cash -- good times indeed, hehehe).

I noticed about two and a half years ago, I started paying fees for the conversion. However, I don't know if its the card company or the issuing bank. If it matters I use Visa and MC.

So here's the update, in case this is helpful to anyone. I called my bank and they will 2nd day the money to me. I paid $13 for the shipping, but otherwise no fee. It was a $150US minimum, which was a bit more than I wanted to spend, but h well. It was really easy and my bank was wonderful. I don't know why I thought it'd be a hassle.

yup, I agree with this here. When I was leaving Cincy on my way to Miami, I had to walk past different money booths that exchanged your money to whatever you wanted. I thougth it was cool!

P.S. That's great that you got the money exchanged Kitty. Maybe since you spent more money on him than you originally planned, maybe he'll buy you something nice while he's in France.

Glad it worked out. This is a terrific and thoughtful gift, by the way! When the ex and I moved to Australia, my parents gave us about AUS $100 on our way to the airport. By the time we landed and went through customs, we were miserably thirsty and hungry and the exchange place at the airport was charging a ridiculously high fee. That AUS $100 got us our shuttle from Brisbane to the Gold Coast and food and drink, and we lived on it for a couple of days until we could get our bank account set up and changeover some more money. I had no idea how much we would need that money but it really came in handy!

You can buy traveler's checks from any bank in euros, or go to a Thomas Cook or American Express Travel.

If it's not a ton of money, ($100 or less), just give it in cash. He'll get a better exchange rate in France or could just use the cash to buy food or pay airport parking.
